My 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD PRO has a 10-speed automatic transmission and it's a significant upgrade from the previous generation Tundra's 6-speed automatic transmission. This video is an overview of the driving experience when S-mode is selected. Does it provide the same level of fun and excitement as a manual transmission? Watch to find out.

It’s not designed to be used as a daily driving thrill ride. Driving through canyons S mode was great. It’s for towing and engine braking. I didn’t have to use my brakes just threw it into S3, or climbing slip it to s3 and get more power to make the climb. Then when on level ground I moved back to D. It’s got a function, but not as a traditional stick.

Agreed, can stand it. I've hit the rev limiter too many times in "S" mode. Only thing it's good for is keeping the auto start/stop off

I daily drive a Lexus GX460 with a similar “S-Mode”. I don’t feel it is there to simulate a manual transmission. I use it more as a gear limiter for better acceleration up grades, better engine braking down grades and for towing. It is a little strange and takes a while to get used to but when used in those situations, you will begin to notice the benefits. 🤷‍♂️

Thank you for this Bert! Makes a lot more sense. I’ll definitely try this out when I take the truck off road.

@@TristanGrimaldo No problem. My daily commute to work involves some good grades. If I do not put the vehicle in “S-mode”, I am using the brakes way too often to manage my speed while descending. When going up grades, leaving it in “S-mode”, I notice more responsive acceleration as the transmission holds gears closer to redline before shifting. When accelerating while in “S-mode”, I let the transmission do all the shifting through gears as it acts as a gear limiter. I believe in the owner’s manual for my vehicle, it is suggested that towing only be done in “S-mode”. My vehicle doesn’t have a tow/haul mode but is a Toyota product, so I assume there may be some similarities in function with the power trains. I’ve owned and driven several manual transmission vehicles over the last couple of decades and prefer them over automatic transmissions. Trying to use Toyota’s “S-mode” to operate a vehicle as if it had a manual transmission doesn’t work very well but I’ve found that using it as a gear limiter, it is a great and helpful feature. Downside to it is I’ve noticed a 1-2 mpg decline in my fuel economy as I find my foot getting more into it as I enjoy the responsiveness and hearing the little V8 come to life. Hope this helps.

For clarification, when I say put it in “S-mode” I mean shift it to “4S” and leave it there. From a complete stop while in “4S”, when you accelerate or punch it the vehicle should start off in first gear on its own and shift through second and third for you. It should then keep it in fourth as the highest gear available until you shift out of it yourself. I use “D” mainly as an overdrive while on the highway or on long flat stretches with minimal traffic. Using the vehicle this way may cost some in fuel economy in my experience but is worth it in my opinion for the improvement in performance.

I’ll choose a manual transmission over auto any day. Even if it’s slower. It’s the driving experience for me 😎

Curious if it would run any different using a JB4...I just installed one on my 22 Off Road today...the turbos sound better and the truck just sounds happier with the default Tune Map "1" (In Cali and trying to get above 91 is a challenge)....I came here due to googling manual shifting 22 Tundra...great video...appreciate the honesty and calling it what it is...

Thank you Bradley! Would be interesting to know how it would work. I’m very experienced with the v6 twin turbo power train. I was able to get my ecoboost F150 to push close to 400+ whp and 700lbs of torque. Honestly trying to avoid messing with the TRD pro because once I start, I can’t stop 🤣

With previous gen tundra at a dead stop, even though it says D4, it still start out in 1st gear and shifts up to 4th gear. If you change to D1, it will stay in 1st gear. D2, it will shift up to 2nd gear. While driving, D4 is the safest gear to be in at any highway speed when down shifting. You can manually shift to what ever gear you want from then on. It's a truck. Not a sports car. Lol

I don’t think it should have an S mode at all. Now unless you have the sport model ok but the computer will always take over. It has to be tuned to that mode, if Toyota really wanted to. They could of tuned that portion of the option.

I agree. Someone on my video commented and explained the purpose or use of it very well. Primarily not for sport fun but more purposeful reasons like steep pathways

Toyota aftermarket nothing compared to Audi…it’s too bad though…but an ecu and tcu upgrade would do wonders to this truck, done properly.
