Thank you for using consistent and helpful testing methods and taking the time to describe how you conducted the tests. The rigor in data collection and application of scientific principals is appreciated. Too many KZfaq "ranking" videos, and internet ranking sites in general, use bizarre approaches making their results absolutely useless. While I may not agree with your recommendations for every topic, I can see the conditions you used to gather your data and compare them to my use case conditions.

I use AXIS cameras exclusively at work with Milestone servers and love them! I tried some Reolink cams at home based on your recommendation (both RLC-511 & RLC811A so far) and am pleasantly surprised by their price/performance level. While not AXIS level of quality, they do amazingly well for 1/10th the price! Thank you for your review!
@haknys

The biggest problem with Reolink is low light conditions. They reduce the shutter speed to make the image look bright, but in movement its all blurry.
@morton2200
@morton2200 2 жыл бұрын
@@haknys That is my experience as well. My other issue with Reolink is poor motion detection algorithm on the RLC-511. Even on the most sensitive setting it has difficulty picking up a person more than 50-60 feet away, but is then too sensitive up close and activates on shadows or light changes. AXIS motion detection is much more accurate and configurable.
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp 2 жыл бұрын
No disagreement here that Axis cameras are much better than Reolinks, but the value is pretty hard to argue with, especially when compared to other consumer solutions like Wyze, Ring, Simplisafe, and Vivint.
@haknys
@haknys 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHookUp We only sell Axis to the customers with the budget, but its of course not for the private marked. Sometimes even combine it with thermal camera and high end video analytics. But the price can be astronomical, not to mention the infrastructure and servers. Different marked. Cool that you include it in the test anyway, so one can see the difference between pro and consumer. I would however argue that low light performance is maby the most important spec for most private homes, and that there are better low-ligh performers in the same price class as Reolink.

Good video, remember security cameras are really not defensive tools, just electronic witnesses of the crime. Focus on door and window security, no large bushes around the house, no tools or ladders left outside, good lighting. Don't lose the fundamentals playing with cameras! Security Cameras are a luxury, it's a bonus to identify a suspected criminal less than 10ft around your house, you don't really need to be studying random traffic patterns on the street. Don't feel bad you don't have LPR capabilities, and defense department level night vision, 10ft around your house is a danger zone, not much else, and Reolink checks that box, I enjoy the RLC-822A turret style of the 811A. 👍

I only do about 2-3 installations a year, as my main work is in IT but i have fun installing cameras. I found it better IMO (limited) to install 2 cameras with a narrow field of view rather than a optical zoom camera or motorized. My reason is that with two cameras you are constantly recording everything all the time and make more effective use of pixels capturing a landscape.

I used to purchase unbranded hikvision cameras from monoprice, but based on the recommendations and consistently good reviews of the Reolink cameras, it is easily the best bang for the buck. The Reolinks are just very reasonably priced and while they may not perform the best in all categories they perform well enough, and the price warrants the lack of always being the best. Also, the setup for a Reolink once plugged into your network via their app is by far the easiest network camera setup I have come across. I use blueiris as my NVR, and usually, it is a pain getting the camera settings just right, but once again the Reolinks have been some of the easiest to set up the main, and substreams. Really appreciate the content you produce, keep up the good work.

Full disclosure… I am a sales rep from Avigilon, the camera you tested from our range is almost 6 years old (dinosaur in terms of technology) and was discontinued 2.5years ago, also that model did not have IR. Hey Daniel, sorry I took so long to respond to this (I was traveling when I saw it). It was a struggle even getting an Avigilon to test. It was originally my intention to get an H5A to test but I reached out to a Florida system integrator and asked if I could pay full price and they declined saying they only sell cameras that they are going to install. I ended up having to resort to Ebay to get the one I tested, and there were no H5A models available.

Sounds like someone who works over at @Avigilon should send out a 8.0C-H5A-B01-IR promotional camera. I think he might have done @Avigilon a favor, considering the 8.0C-H5A-B01-IR cost $1099 compared to least expensive yet highly competitive Reolink costing $110.

excellent review, I certainly appreciate the time it would have taken to put this together. One other feature of the cameras is stream compression. Axis's Zipstream and variable frame rate drops the recorded file size to a tiny fraction of a full stream. This will pay for itself in storage requirements in the long run. Professionally, I was able to run 65 Axis cameras, using motion sensing, on about 4T of storage (via Milestone). The same number of cameras in the same locations were using 7.6T storage (on Milestone) using VGA mjpeg settings.

Really enjoy watching your videos because they're super informative and I almost always learn something from them! :) It would be nice to have a video about NVR's or rather, storage/management options. For example, pro's or con's for using NVR vs NAS or your PC for example. Another example could be if you're using something like Deepstack and maybe Frigate (or Blue Iris - which I understand is installed on a PC), would you even need an NVR? Maybe then just NAS for storing video clips etc. So basically, if someone wanted to buy camera's from different manufacturers, understanding what kind of "NVR" solution would be appropriate, would be nice to know.

Excellent video. In the future there is another test that would be very helpful, and critical for some users. A test for camera processor capacity is important. I live in an area where the background is heavily wooded and on windy days this means there is a high rate of pixel change. I have found that some cameras, like the Reolink 810A cannot smoothly deliver video in these conditions. I have done extensive testing and my network utilization never exceeds 12%, the computer CPU never exceeds 14%, GPU never exceed 5%, and disk utilization never exceeds 3%. The only possible problem areas left are Blue Iris or the cameras itself. Blue Iris is recording directly to disk, so it is unlikely that it is the problem. This leaves only the camera as suspect.

Thank you for the hard work you put into this video! I am running three different Reolink cameras and for the life of me I can't understand the praise for their daytime image quality which I find to be mediocre at best - and yes, the nighttime quality is quite bad. What I do like about them is that the AI person detection is very good on all of them and the phone app is really good too.

Picked up a Reolink cam to replace an old ADT/Dahua one after watching some of your earlier videos and have been very happy with them. When I discovered that Synology Surveillance Station has native support for their person/vehicle detection, it was a no-brainer to replace the other old cameras that came with my house, including swapping a stationary one for the new 823A PTZ so I can expand coverage to part of my driveway I couldn't see before (there's a bug in the auto-tracking, but Reolink support has been great).

the new tracking cameras look great. smooth movements and zooms in to follow the subject. So if someone approaches your driveway, the camera will follow them for optimal recording.

As always, good content. I'm very glad I found this video, I was debating whether or not to ditch my current camera setup for the Unifi G4 Pro 4k cameras because I purchased the Dream Machine Pro. After seeing this, I'll keep what I have a little longer. I just don't like the NVR I'm using anymore. The software updates have made it too difficult to do much of anything anymore. While it's easy to navigate, getting footage off of it is a nightmare now and I don't do it anymore. I wish the DMP would support ONVIF.

Your reviews are PERFECT! Thank you for spending so much time into the videos you have helped me out alot. Can you tell me if there's much of a difference between the cheaper cameras VS the industrial/commercial cameras? The Security Camera installedrs have talked negative about Amcrest, Reolink., Loren, ect...

This was really helpful for judging the video capabilities of these cameras. Personally, I would hugely appreciate a video comparing actual functionality, such as response time, accuracy of motion detection how reliable the connection is, etc. I have my entire home covered with Reolink cameras, and honestly I completely regret it. All the reviews and videos said they were great, but when I try to connect to my video feed they fail more than half the time and I have to restart my app. Even the ones plugged in inside my house regularly lose Internet connection and won’t function, my outdoor cameras will send off motion alerts all day from cars or traffic on the street, but not from somebody walking directly to the camera until they’ve almost already passed, things like that. I can’t find any reliable sources that talk about this sort of video functionality, so a video like yours would be amazingly helpful.

@@TheHookUp oh my gosh, thanks for such an amazingly fast response! My outdoor Argus 3s send constant alerts from the street or literally from the grass blowing in my neighbors yard but doesn’t kick on alerts or recording of people walking toward it until they’ve almost passed. They will sometimes pick up animals moving through the yard, but it seems to take about 1 to 2 seconds of motion before the recording actually starts. My indoor E1s regularly disconnect from my Internet for days at a time and then mysteriously reconnect later. Both models failed to connect with my Reolink app for viewing probably about 50% of the times I try, whether the app was already open in the background, or is being opened from scratch. I have wondered if I just got some crappy models, but after spending hundreds of dollars on these based on their good reviews, i’ve been shy about starting all over with another brand or model.

@@TheHookUp lol, and now that I made this comment, the very first video that popped up in my recommended feed is your truth about Reolink video. Off to watch that next…😂
@TheHookUp

You confirmed what I suspected based on your comment. Battery + WiFi cameras will always have that same issue. The way they work is that they have a separate non camera based motion sensor that will then turn the camera on when it senses motion (they have to do this to save battery). Unfortunately, it can often take 2-3 seconds for the camera portion to boot up, so you end up not catching a motion event until it's too late. As far as your indoor E1's not connecting, I'd suspect wifi congestion. I don't have any standard E1's, but I have tested and still use a few E1 Pro and E1 Zooms (as well as an E1 outdoor). I have not had connection issues with those, though they do prefer to be on 5ghz wifi, which can have lower range than other types.

Great review. I re-evaluate my outdoor cameras every 3-5 years but I'm sad to say consumer security cameras still fall well below what I'd consider, "good". Perhaps that's because my expectations grow every 3-5 years slightly ahead of technology. My first serious outdoor cameras included Mobotix and I still compare others to that.

Mobotix is some good (but pricey) stuff, I bet if you tried out the Axis it would blow your mind.

Amazingly well done. Great job on the comparison. So my take away is get reolinks for any regular camera use and then specialized cameras for any areas that you feel might require it. Like a camera for long distance night vision/ir camera to look across my field.

i recently ordered the Reolink 6 camera 811A - 5x optical camera kit. Yes, all the reviews say that recording at night is challenging. This is interesting since most of the crimes happen at night when we are asleep. So why can the camera makers couldn't do better in this area? But the cheapest and easiest fix is to add good lighting. If you have a longer driveway, add a 3k lumin lighting. They have wifi lights for just $130. The brighter you make it, the better the footage is going to be. So if you're looking for a great camera for your budget, Reolink is the way to go. The $1,000 camera is for people who can afford it or for a high end business who is protecting high dollar products or equipment. I bought a 6 camera Reolink for just under $900.

Coming back to this video today.. I've been referencing to this to many who ask about Security Cameras, and now. I want to swap out my Unifi cameras, since the newer ones do not support RTSP anymore. (Some of them do, but you still need their NVR hardware box to unlock the option). What I'm missing of information is connectivity. One thing I really like with Unifi cameras, is that they only take one RJ-45 connector and it's hidden inside the base. So that I can have my Ø16mm conduit where I have my TP cable, and feed it directly into the camera base. I was going to try out ReoLink 811A or the 823A, but they both come with this squid cable thing, and will not fit into my wall/conduit..

Almost all other brands use pigtails until you get to their ultra-premium models. It's much easier to waterproof a pigtail connection than an RJ45 jack.
