This particular balloon is not a danger to commercial airliners because it's actually at 60.000 feet, so 4 times higher than an ordinary airline flight. In fact, it's so high that it becomes a problem for interceptors like F22.

It's actually difficult to shoot down a weather balloon. The pressure differential is very small, the balloon is very large, and bullets are only so big. One of ours was headed to Soviet airspace and we shot it over 1000 times and that barely brought it down.

One thought that crossed my mind when I first heard the story was: I wonder how often stuff like this happens “behind the scenes” and ordinary citizens just never hear about it, I’ve heard from intelligence people that it happens often. I wonder how silly the narrative people would feel if they knew how big a deal this actually is compared to the other dozen crazy things that happen every day that we never hear about. Then I also think the possibility that it’s an EMP delivery device is fairly concerning. The Canadian government is reporting a second ballon over Canada, additionally US military is also reporting over Guam and another over Hawaii! So something strange is going on. Actually, you can steer it. Wind direction varies at different altitudes. Do you have total control? Of course not. But relative control, yes. And if it was just a weather balloon and there wasn't any other motivation behind it, wouldn't China simply called up the US and Canada and just simply warn them that this balloon is drifting our way?

Had one over Oahu a couple years ago. Looks like a star in daytime. Telescope showed it to be a humongous balloon with payload. s./ to n. direction. If a few holes were shot in it, it would slowly descend and not be a problem.

That balloon is in the stratosphere - probably at 100k feet. Civil aircraft fly at about 40k feet. So no danger.

While I appreciate Gonzalo’s sense of humor and perspective, the reality is he has no idea what is or isn’t a threat. The question that should be asked is why the US government, military and media is delivering this balloon message with one voice. There is no expectation that this makes our government look competent or strong. This is happening in conjunction with the narrative that we’re preparing for a war with China by 2025. This is purely psychological to manipulate the population and prepare the tribal support of naive citizens. Gonzalo is correct on the second part. The purpose that Gonzalo is questioning is perhaps another possibility. It is to destroy the west rather than China. A smart nation, which China surely is, would employ a wide variety of intelligence-collection mechanisms. Satellites, aircraft (manned or unmanned), human intel, digital surveillance, and yes, balloons. A balloon has a number of possible advantages as an intelligence collection platform: it's hard to detect (small radar cross section even though it's huge), can loiter for a long time (several days), carries plausible deniability (it's just a weather balloon!), have low power consumption so can be solar powered, fly above most weather, and are surprisingly hard to shoot down. This makes them ideal for certain types of intelligence collection, such as signals/radio intelligence, where it doesn't matter much where you go, only that you're over a general area (hundreds of thousands of sq km), which is a kind of steering that _is_ possible with balloons that can change their altitude and pick which air current to follow. As for the objection that they didn't know it would end up over the US, easy -- just launch several of them, and statistically, some will end up where you want. So I find it extremely plausible that this actually was a spy balloon. Whether one should become hysterical about this is a separate matter -- the US, of course, has been spying on literally everyone for the past century or so, using exactly the same methods (how many U2s and SR71s flew over the Soviet Union?), including mass surveillance of everyone on the planet. It's pretty hypocritical to complain when the Chinese do what they've been doing to everyone else.

Disagree with you here. There has been more than one balloon spotted. It is also silly to think they don't have the technology to alter direction of it if need be. You could be right, maybe harmless but it would also be a clever way to deliver an EMP or just use it as spy craft because no one is going to expect a balloon. My thoughts are this to being used to gauge what we are going to allow, reaction time etc.
