BMW very kindly invited us to their 2023 BMW iX1 Prototype Drive. Please see below for all the information on the BMW iX1. This was a very brief drive but we wanted to capture an initial reaction on the car before we do a full in depth review next year.
This is an all new electric offering of the already very popular X1. We got a first look at the BMW iX1 before it's launch next year in 2023. In the meantime if you have any questions, please do leave them in the comments below.

Introducing the BMW iX1: the first pure-electric compact SAV
The all-electric BMW iX1 xDrive30 is powered by one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear, each combined with power electronics and transmission in a single, compact housing. The drive units deliver a combined output of 313hp (including temporary boost) and overall torque of 494Nm.
The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology also comprises the car’s charging technology and the 64.7kWh high-voltage battery positioned flat within the vehicle’s underbody. The battery’s high energy density and the drive system’s efficiency achieve combined power consumption of 18.1 - 17.0kWh per 100km (WLTP) and a driving range of 259 - 270 miles.
Adaptive M suspension with frequency-selective damping
Adaptive M suspension is standard for all M Sport models, including the plug-in hybrids and iX1, and is fitted as standard on the BMW iX1 xDrive30 xLine. Agility and comfort benefit from mechanically controlled adjustable and frequency-selective dampers. Pressure peaks inside the dampers are smoothed out by additional valves active on the rebound side. The specially designed damper system also brings about a 15mm drop in ride height.
Sport steering is part of the adaptive M suspension specification on all variants, with a more direct rack ratio, along with the Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance included with the standard steering.
Emotionally rich sound experience with BMW IconicSounds Electric
BMW IconicSounds Electric treats customers to soundscapes developed as part of a collaboration between the BMW Group and two-time Academy Award-winning film score composer Hans Zimmer. The character of the sound alters according to the vehicle setting chosen with the My Modes button. A drive sound emitted externally at low speeds helps to protect pedestrians by making them aware that the car is approaching.
A model-specific sound experience is also available inside the new BMW X1 xDrive23i. Its drive note is transmitted into the interior via the speaker system in a way that reflects the driving situation and the driving mode selected.
Fully electric BMW iX1 has an exemplary carbon footprint
A rigorous approach is taken to reducing the CO2 emissions released during production of the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology employed in the new BMW iX1 and BMW X1 plug-in hybrid variants. In the supply chain, green electricity for battery cell production and increased use of secondary raw materials cuts CO2 emissions by around 20 per cent compared.

Your prototype iX1 has 20" rims. They look great. They reduce the electric’s range by 2%. How are they for comfort? Worth it? And, iX1 vs Evoque P250 - which would you choose?

I didn’t know that, you learn something knew everyday. I would say though that the car performed beautifully on them. The ride was great. Sporty but not intrusive or too firm. I haven’t driven the Evoque, and as it is so subjective I would say when you can go and drive both. 👍🏻

all EVs suffer a range hit from bigger wheels. why we aren't ordering the M-sport; once we compare the options on the line we want, the msport model comes out at £1k more and with worse range. very much an example of where the manufacturer is selling a premium option which actually makes things worse

@@SteveLoughran 2% of 440 KM is 8.8KM. Yes, it’s a trade off, but they look great. All iX1 come with Adaptive M suspension as standard.

I'm driving an iX3 M Sport and I absolutely love it. First time that I've got an EV and I'm not looking back. It's great.

Thank you for the content. I will be gratefull if you reply my question: Could you share any information on the effects of the recuperation / regenerative brake system recharge on the health / life time of the batteries?

You mentioned launch middle of next year, however I have one on order with a estimated January production date for Australia.

I have a fully loaded M Sport iX1 on order. Test drove the iX3 to get a feel for what the iX1 might be like. Also test drove the Tesla Model Y, the VW ID4 and the Kia EV6.

I think you have made a good choice. Fully loaded it has everything you will ever need. It is plenty fast enough and I think is the prettiest out of the above bunch.

Same here! Just ordered 2 weeks ago. Test drove the hybrid Countryman and X1 we decided to go for the iX1. Didn’t even want to try Tesla :) .

I see that you were driving on 20" wheels and in that context did you by any chance drive on rough roads? If so how did the suspension cope? I didn't quite catch everything you said about the steering, But I did note that you said that the steering felt synthetic. But is it sharp enough to be able to drive on country roads as you were doing?

Yes the ride was great. The roads were bumpy B roads and is coped really well. The steering even though feels a little “synthetic” the rack is quick making it feel quite sporty. The weight of the steering changes through all the different modes. Hope that helps. 👍🏻

If it comes to South Africa and cost below R1 million (unlike it's R1,2 million Ix3 big brother), it's on my radar. Just the lack of scrolling wheel for navigating the menu that's troubling me

What was your battery consumption on this test drive ? I pre-ordered one but I am very curious at the real life consumption.

It was about a half and hour drive and driven very “normally” it genuinely consumed about 2% which I was actually quite impressed with!
