The Honda CBX500 has entered the South African small adventure motorcycle market and Donovan did an unrecommended ride through the mud on road tyres to find out if it was any good.

I rode my cb500x from Scotland to Africa. Knobbly tires, some engine protection and a luggage rack honestly makes this the perfect bike for the job.

I purchased a CB500X in June, it now has a 9,000 km on it, mostly backroads, which in November I winterized and stored for the winter😮‍💨 . The bike is a nimble and light 199 kg adventure bike that even with the additional 22 kg of engine guard, skid plate, radiator guard, luggage and pannier racks, at 79 years old, that I can still pick it up. The bike proved it handles well on th ride on the Tail of the Dragon, 318 curves in 11 miles. As you mentioned the engine delivers even torque over a long range and power is sufficient. I verify and confirmed by GPS, mine did 170 km/h at 600 rpm below red line on level expressway. Other than oil changes, I've not had a single issue with the bike. It has typical manufacture tires; the tread is down to 3/32 inch. I could get another 600km out of them, but at 1000 miles, both tires picked up gutter screws that a roofers truck deposited on the expressway and they have string plugs in them. I'll be putting new shoes on her in spring, Michelin Anakee Adventure tires.

Thanks for the feedback. Helped make my decision on which bike to buy. Riding a 1,000lb motorcycle on the Dragon, country and mountain roads is doable but not all that fun. After years of this, I am looking forward for a smaller, nimble, reliable motorcycle for that type of riding.

Bought a Versys x300 cos this wasn't available at the time, but recon the extra power is certainly appealing

The CB500X easily gets 30km per litre or better. Very fuel efficient!

This gem of a bike had to recently say bye to Indian shores. But I kindf feel it's validated. The unwritten law of pricing for India is- not more than Rs 1 lakh ( approx $1200) per 100 cc . So a 500 cc bike should cost not more than 5 lakh. If you want people to rush for bookings then price it agressively at 10% lesser. And this is for the current quality n performance. If you can compensate on quality in terms of lesser power, quality of fittings , nuts, bolts plastic, then people would still give you patronage at 3.5 lakhs Indian rupees ( for example Himalayan- proportionated to 500 cc ).. on the other side, if you could provide extravaganze like the soundgasm n looks that Benelli or the likes provide , Then maybe you could price it at 6 lakhs.. But with the current performance, quality, looks, sound n other attributes, Honda should deliver this at 5 lakhs Indian rupees DOT. The only way Honda would be able to pull this off is by shifting manufacturing of these bikes to their India mfg plant. Honda has been manufacturing in India since few decades, and if they say they can't start off a 500 cc platform even after these many years , is a black mark on the prowess of Honda.. And let not anyone supporting Honda give this QC bull wrt India .. That whyne is a decade old... If BMW could muster confidence to manufacture locally their 300 cc ones despite their short stint , Honda should do TWICE as better to be called as Honda in the first place. Hence although i feel sad that Honda is retracting this nice bike from Indian shores, I'd want Honda to take this hit..I'd rather want Yamaha to ( who look like- are in India with some really lazy bunch of manpower) to pitch in and pull it off and show it to Honda how it's done.

Perfect Motorcycle for India. One Bike do it all. However Honda being Honda will price it to the moon and expect people to buy it. Not gonna happen Honda, price it right and you can storm the market.

Just to let you know...the asked price in Europe is around 7500€ (appr. 7900$).

Love the work of this and the main Bike Show channel. But what was very noticeable in this review unlike most of your work was what wasn't said. The Honda does have more power, but it wasn't mentioned that it also has a lot more weight than the KTM, around 20kg, completely nullifying the P/W advantage. That extra weight will also make itself felt off road and in a very negative way. Also, the Honda doesn't have spoked wheels, quick shifter, switchable off-road ABS and switchable traction control, aluminium swingarm, all of which the KTM has. In the interests of fairness all that is is missing from the Honda should be mentioned. If only in the interests of fairness and to give the consumer all the information. This review is after all consumer purchasing advice for your viewers.

Agreed. Although, in fairness, we would need mention all the other competition too, and that would make the video exceptionally long and somewhat more tedious to what. Then again, that's what group tests are for (watch this space).

Haha a Ktm fanboy crying over why honda is a better bike for the same money, or trying to justify your purchase? No sane person ever needed a quickshifter, traction control, ride modes on a 390 cc thumper, except if you are 20 year old rich kid who has never ridden a bike. Neither of these is a good offroad bike, however, honda is just a superior road bike. No amount of spoked wheels and electronics is gonna save the 390 adv. You can take your unreliable dirt-engine wasp and cry on it when it leaves you stranded on the side od the road.

Definitely change the tires if you are gonna use it for primarily off-road, but at that point just get a ktm 390 adventure

Such a capable bike but in India they priced it against the Kawasaki Versys 650 and it failed badly..
