@@ers1027 it’s not absurd, it’s a luxury car with batteries. Batteries are expensive and that won’t change within the next 15 years at least but dumb people want cars like this, wasteful and what not, so it won’t change before hydrogen or solid state or e fuel.

@@ers1027 I agree the prices are insane but at the end of the day this is a luxury good and as a result, based on where the market is, this seems not that bad. Everyone pays more for something than they should, Cars, watches, clothes, fancy dinner, musical instruments, housing. Everybody has a vice. If someone can afford this car, I think the price for what you get seems reasonable.

Much better then the Y. The regen braking on teslas cannot be disabled so it feels like you’re stepping on the breaks every time you put your foot off the pedal. With Mercedes you can adjust the regen so that it drives like a normal car.

At first I wasn’t a fan of the look. But I now own one and think it’s very handsome, and unique. It won’t appeal to folks wanting to make a splashy “look at me” statement. I’ve owned many beautiful sports cars, so I’m not judging if that’s what you want from a car. But this is more understated and will appeal to folks that want to be less conspicuous but still posh. I realize that’s an oxymoron. I have previously owned many Land Rover and Range Rovers. So I’m used to the “Butch Truck” aesthetic. I personally like how this car avoids that. The lower hood height is better for pedestrian safety and as a city driver that was something I didn’t like about the Defender 90 I had. The tech is great. The screens have zero lag and are really intuitive. After a day or two you can use every function. The ride quality is good. Perhaps my old Land Rover Discovery had a more magic carpet ride. But that felt like a much bigger car (I loved that car). The fit and finish is great. Pricing in our market is very competitive. My EQE cost me less a month than a mid spec AWD Cadillac Lyriq and nearly the same as a Mach-E GT. For me it was easily the better to both of those cars.

Lynn, I expected a more feminine approach, something ladies are interested in. All too often we hear macho performance figures that once we have the car no one looks back. As a woman presenting this vlog, you do like many men... why would a woman buy this car, not because it drives from zero to 100 in x number of seconds? A missed opportunity if you know that the decision to buy a car is often determined for an important % by the current generation of women. And there are many parts that you unfortunately left behind by having yourself filmed in a moving car.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are often touted as the solution to the environmental and economic problems caused by fossil-fuel-powered cars. EVs are said to be cleaner, cheaper, and more efficient than internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. However, there are many challenges and limitations that prevent EVs from dominating the automotive industry in the near term. In this essay, I will argue that the planet cannot move to 100% electric cars and why the internal combustion engine will be around for a long time. I will also discuss why hydrogen cars need more investment and why battery-powered cars are actually worse for the environment than ICE cars due to the toxic chemicals that make up lithium-ion batteries. One of the main barriers to the widespread adoption of EVs is the high upfront cost compared to ICE cars. According to a report by Engine Builder magazine, electric vehicles have an overall cost that is 44% to 60% higher than ICE vehicles over a 20-year lifetime, accounting for manufacturing, disposal, maintenance, energy, and depreciation costs1. A similar analysis by Car and Driver magazine showed that some EVs are only slightly cheaper or even more expensive than their ICE counterparts2. The high price of EVs is mainly due to the cost of batteries, which account for about a third of the total vehicle cost. Batteries are also subject to degradation over time and need to be replaced after a certain number of cycles, adding to the total cost of ownership. Another challenge for EVs is the lack of adequate charging infrastructure and grid capacity. EVs require access to reliable and convenient charging stations, which are still scarce in many parts of the world. According to a report by McKinsey & Company, there were only about 1.3 million public charging points globally in 2020, while there were about 1 billion ICE vehicles on the road. The report also estimated that by 2030, there would be a need for 40 million public charging points and 140 million private charging points to support the projected growth of EVs. Moreover, the increased demand for electricity from EVs would put a strain on the existing power grids, which may not be able to handle the peak loads without significant upgrades and investments. A third challenge for EVs is the environmental impact of battery production and disposal. EVs are often perceived as zero-emission vehicles, but they still have a carbon footprint that depends on the source of electricity used to charge them. According to a study by Transport & Environment, an average EV in Europe emits 66% less CO2 than an average ICE car over its lifetime. However, this figure does not account for the emissions from battery manufacturing, which can be significant depending on the location and methods used. For example, a study by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute found that producing one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery capacity can result in 150 to 200 kilograms of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, batteries contain toxic chemicals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, which pose risks for human health and the environment if not properly recycled or disposed of. According to a report by BloombergNEF, only about 5% of lithium-ion batteries are recycled globally, while most end up in landfills or incinerators. Given these challenges and limitations of EVs, it is unlikely that they will completely replace ICE cars in the near future. ICE cars still have advantages over EVs in terms of affordability, availability, range, performance, and familiarity. Moreover, ICE cars can become more efficient and less polluting with technological improvements and alternative fuels. One promising option is hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), which use hydrogen gas as fuel and emit only water vapor as exhaust. Hydrogen FCVs have similar benefits as EVs in terms of zero tailpipe emissions and high efficiency but do not suffer from the drawbacks of battery weight, degradation However, hydrogen FCVs also face some challenges and limitations that hinder their widespread adoption. One of them is the high cost of building and maintaining hydrogen FCVs. According to a report by Treehugger, hydrogen FCVs are more expensive than ICE cars and EVs due to the complexity and rarity of the fuel cell components1. Moreover, hydrogen FCVs require more maintenance than ICE cars and EVs due to the corrosive nature of hydrogen and the sensitivity of the fuel cell system1. Another challenge for hydrogen FCVs is the scarcity of hydrogen refueling stations. According to a report by E&C, there were only about 500 hydrogen refueling stations globally in 2020, while there were about 150,000 gas stations in the U.S. alone2. The report also estimated that by 2030, there would be a need for 5,000 to 15,000 hydrogen refueling stations to support the projected growth of hydrogen FCVs. However, building and operating hydrogen refueling stations is costly and complex due to the high pressure and low temperature required for storing and dispensing hydrogen2. A third challenge for hydrogen FCVs is the environmental impact of hydrogen production and distribution. Hydrogen FCVs are often perceived as zero-emission vehicles, but they still have a carbon footprint that depends on the source of hydrogen used to fuel them. According to a report by Compare the Market, most of the hydrogen produced today comes from fossil fuels such as natural gas or coal through a process called steam reforming, which emits large amounts of CO23. Moreover, transporting and distributing hydrogen requires more energy and infrastructure than transporting and distributing electricity or gasoline3. Therefore, hydrogen FCVs can only become truly green and sustainable if they use renewable energy sources such as solar or wind to produce hydrogen through a process called electrolysis, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen without emitting CO23. However, this process is currently more expensive and less efficient than steam reforming3. Thus, more research and investment are needed to improve the technology and economics of renewable hydrogen production. In conclusion, EVs and hydrogen FCVs are both promising alternatives to ICE cars that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. However, they both have some challenges and limitations that prevent them from dominating the automotive industry in the near term. EVs are more expensive, less convenient, and less environmentally friendly than they seem due to the issues of battery cost, degradation, disposal, charging infrastructure, grid capacity, and electricity source. Hydrogen FCVs are more efficient, quieter, faster to refuel, and longer-range than EVs but also more costly, complex, scarce, and carbon-intensive than they seem due to the issues of fuel cell cost, maintenance, refueling infrastructure, hydrogen production, and distribution. Therefore, ICE cars will still be around for a long time until these challenges and limitations are overcome by technological innovations and policy interventions. References: 1: Treehugger. (2020).
