2023 Nissan Ariya | The Only Fully Cooked Japanese EV?
For the latest Nissan Ariya pricing and information:
www.kbb.com/nissan/ariya/
The most obvious thing about the 2023 Nissan Ariya’s exterior probably the front end. No grille. Why would you need it? Instead, Nissan’s using a shield with illuminated badging to house sensors for driver’s assistance features like their ProPilot Assist system.
The front end with Nissan’s V-motion design headlights incorporated looks modern. If you look closely you can see this graphic pattern eludes to a Japanese ma design style. This is supposed to look like clouds parting as the sun, the Nissan logo, rises.
To keep the taillight continuous, they opted for a first of its kind written out NISSAN badge. It gets fender flares that give it a hint of muscularity and a feeling of power. Mazda’s MX-30 does a great job in the looks department, too, but I think I like how the Ariya looks just a bit better. It doesn’t get that super high beltline and feels better proportioned.
Because the Ariya rides on an EV exclusive platform, designers didn’t have to work around structures for mechanicals that don’t exist. For example, it doesn’t need to accommodate for a transmission tube or physical connections to the transmission, so there is a flat floor giving you more space that what’s usable in the segment with ICE cars.
You get a movable center console for adjustment and comfort. There’s a tray for resting things or stashing stuff. And if you’re not using your wireless charger with your Wireless Apple CarPlay there’s a space where you can wind up your charge cord.
Of course, there’s a ton of tech on the interior as well. You’ve got standard dual 12.3-inch screens that stretch from the A-pilar to the center of the cabin. These work in tandem with Nissan’s easy to use UX system to really give the driver a customizable set up for their information and I like how they’re oriented to the driver making them easy to see.
There aren’t a ton of physical buttons, but you get haptic feedback controls in this wood finish for HVAC. It’s pretty sensitive but it’s easy to get used to. And I do like that they include a volume knob. Yes, I’m still old school.
The interior of the Ariya is incredibly livable. It’s comfortable and spacious and doesn’t feel like it compromises. Materials in the back seat.
The Ariya will be available with either one front mounted motor or two motors. The second powers the rear wheels. That gets you AWD or what Nissan are calling e-4ORCE. It will also have two battery size options, either a 63-kWh battery or a larger 87-kWh battery, so there are choices when it comes to buying the car you need or want.
The battery lives underneath the center of car giving it a low center of gravity, that makes for solid handling. This little thing turns effortlessly and confidently thanks to that and a lot of structural rigidity. The suspension gives you a cushiony feel without going overboard and going mushy on you.
ProPilot assist is the same system that comes on the Rogue, Pathfinder, Altima and other Nissan products and is the latest iteration of their driver’s assistance features.
Nissan moved the charge port from the front on the LEAF to the side in case you want to back into a parking spot. On a DC Fast charger you’ll get 100-miles in 15 minutes. The Ariya tops at a 130 kw charge peak - but the good thing about that is no matter if your 350 charger is only pushing 250 or 150 and not at full capacity you’ll always get that 100/15.
The base model Venture+ (EPA est range: 304 miles) gets the 87 kWh battery (238-hp/221 lb-ft of torque) and comes well equipped with adaptive cruise control and leather wrapped steering wheel. That base model gets the longest possible range, so if that’s what you’re after you don’t have to spend more dough. You can only get the Venture+ trim with FWD.
Pricing starts at $45,950 and deliveries are expected in early fall for the FWD and late fall for the AWD models. Since the Ariya is built in Japan, if you haven’t already reserved one you won’t be eligible for the federal tax credit because that now only applies to cars built in the US and the Ariya is built in Japan. Nissan assures us they’re making strides to qualify again at some point based on the federal government’s latest regulations.
The Nissan Ariya has great looks, excellent interior space, respectable driving chops, and more than adequate range for even the most hesitant EV adopters. It feels deliberate and not like something thrown together. Looks like Nissan’s fellow country-folk have some catching up to do.

A month ago I had the Ariya on loan for a full day here in Japan, and it's a beautiful vehicle, I liked it more than my current Nissan leaf in terms of road noise and overall comfort. It felt truly luxurious, like really floating above the road. But I drive a lot in the very narrow Japanese mountain roads so it's a bit too big for that :-)

Perfect timing! I have literally just returned from a test drive in a gunmetal grey Ariya here in sunny England. Bear in mind we have owned a 2018 Leaf for over 2 years and own a 2011 Leaf too (great fun and peppy!), plus have driven a Tesla Model 3 and a Polestar 2. I have followed EVs since GM announced their AUTOnomy Hy-wire hydrogen car in 2002 at the Paris auto show. Other than the awful haptic controls for changing the driving mode (Sports/Standard/Eco) and ePedal status, the thing is stunning and huge. You have to see it in person up close. Driving it is like being in any large SUV, but very refined and the cabin is quiet. The whole dashboard looks fantastic and the infotainment system is fast, although some aspects such as DAB radio controls are a bit dated, but all the graphics to do with the vehicle (seat heating etc) and speed/energy usage dials are modern and look very Japanese retro sports car - a good thing! It is going to be very hard to choose which EV to buy from a design and feature angle. Tomorrow we try an IONIQ 5, but I think the Ariya is going to win due to the high ride height that makes getting in and out less of a strain on the back, stunning looks and the general Nissan build quality. Nissan are going to do very well with the Ariya once people see one up close in one of the cool colours Nissan offer. The Tesla Model Y, IONIQ 5, Ariya, Polestar 2 and MG4 are going to do much to take EVs to the next level of sales. 3-4 years from now, they will be 25% cheaper and do 500 miles, but for now...

In 3-4 they’ll be 25% cheaper? Do you even follow the market anyhow? How the businesses are doing and dealing with the supply shortages? Those are 25% more expensive than half a year ago. In 3-4 years the EV and battery and mineral crisis will become official, not how it’s swept under the rug right now as some of the mineral surpluses already have been depleted that were supposed to last for years. And this got nothing to do with Covid, it’s the current situation. New battery tech will start appearing maybe in 10 years but those will be first models. Expect them to go back to 2020 prices by 2035-2040 at earliest.

If you can charge at home during off peak hours or at work (bye bye fossil stations), and with a minimum of maintenance that's worth several grand right there during the ownership period of the vehicle. Not to mention used EV prices don't depreciate nearly as badly as ICE vehicles. One thing they didn't mention (I could have missed it) is the Li ion battery is thermally managed, unlike the current Leaf, so degradation won't be an issue unless there is a defect (modern EVs hit 300k km with most of their range intact).

Nice looking exterior design and I appreciate that grille design representing the parting clouds and rising sun. I also like that clean design in the interior. Departure from gloss black is great! OTA updates -- about time!! (I drive a Tesla Model 3 and appreciate all the updates.) I do think that all manufacturers offering Apple Car Play will start billing for the app (because Apple bills them!). Ditto Google. One pedal is the way to go! For sure. Besides convenience, I think it improves range too. Lots of battery size/range options. With increased build out of charge networks, this is a great step forward for Nissan. [Looking forward to a Honda EV here; the cute mini one in the EU isn't marketed here, of course.] This is a really nice review; thanks!

No full one pedal driving sucks. Try stop-and-go traffic in a Nissan Leaf with true e-Pedal and then try it with e-Step in an Ariya. The fact that Nissan nailed one-pedal driving so fantastically in the Leaf and failed to bring that technology forward to this car is mind-boggling. They did not even offer a setting to activate true one-pedal mode. I absolutely abhor stop-and-go traffic, but not until I drove in a traffic jam in my Nissan Leaf did I truly appreciate one-pedal driving's greatest benefit. So sad that I will be cancelling my Ariya order because of this glaring flaw.

@@Cosmycal I walked on to a Volkswagen dealership lot at the beginning of the year with a plan to purchase the ID.4. I loved the look of the car and the features. Then I test drove it and I was trying to figure out what felt wrong about it. I felt like I was driving an ICE vehicle. And then it dawned on me -- no full-stop on the regenerative braking -- i.e.: no one-pedal driving. Couple that with the fact that the ID.4 is programmed to ease in the acceleration and the car just felt wrong. I walked away going from being sure I would buy it to no possible way. Ever since then, I have not even looked at EV's that lack one-pedal driving. In fact I ordered the Ariya because I was SURE it would have it because of my Leaf's e-Pedal. I don't want to drop $60K to feel cheated every time I get caught in a traffic jam and find myself constantly moving my foot from the accelerator to the brakes and back again as I watch the cars next to me force their way in to my lane because of the delay that causes. Same reason I won't drop $60K on a Tesla -- can't imagine having to use Bluetooth to listen to music each time I get in the car and have no access to the apps on my phone from the dashboard. Great cars with glaring flaws that would be so easy to fix, but the manufacturer thinks they know better.

I LOVE driving my Leaf with full one pedal driving and can't imagine getting a new EV without it. I wonder why they removed such a useful feature! It is focus groups? Don't listen to them because how would they know if they like it unless they've actually tried it? It wouldn’t cost anything extra for Nissan to include it as an extension to e-Step right? It's a huge oversight IMO. I'm planning to get the next-gen Maxima EV but if one pedal driving is left out, I wouldn't even consider it.

I had a 2012 LEAF which I traded for a 2022 LEAF. Recently I was able to sit in an Ariya which was in the dealer showroom while my LEAF was getting its state inspection. They let me turn it on and its controls looked in some ways like the LEAF, but there were also some new features. While I'll not be in the market for a new car for a while, I was certainly impressed by the Ariya. I'll recommend it to my sister and brother-in-law, who will probably be buying a new car in the next couple of years. And Nissan will be my go-to brand for another EV when I'm ready.

@Cheez 101 you made the right choice. I never liked the styling of tesla vehicles. And this girl I was dating who has one asked me to drive and it was a terrible ride. I felt every bump like I was in a bus. Don't like the lack of buttons I felt lost and having to look at that iPad for everything was annoying af. Not sure if this is an all ev thing but I hated the one pedal driving in the tesla at least. Felt so jerky, like I was giving myself whiplash. Alot more negatives to list. Good charging network though but I don't care About that, I know people who don't have tesla vehicles who travel and haven't had a problem. Ariya has so much more. HUD, blind spot, self parking, physical buttons, digital rear view mirror, android auto (I can't do without this. Hated in the tesla having to look an address up on my phone only to have to put it in the tesla map thing 🙄). Etc.

given the direction today of the market and the fact there is alot of 'murano-ness' vibes comin off of the design...it wouldnt suprise me if the pulled that move....but upon further research the are actively working on the gen 4 murano...I own a gen 2

It won't replace the Murano, at least not in the near future. Keep your eyes on the market though, as models like the Murano might be going fully electric before too long.

I understand that the sloped rear of the vehicle is for aerodynamics but I'd rather give up a small percentage of economy/distance tor an SUV with a more squared off back that can carry more. There are devices/designs that can improve wind flow where you can still increase cargo size.

I’m sure it’s very nice. I’m still waiting for an EV hot hatch type of car… something small and fun that doesn’t look so weird. The Model 3 is enormous to me as a GTI driver. The Kona is great but I don’t like the looks or particularly the interior. Once someone delivers something fun-ish and actually small for ~40k with 250 miles of range, I’ll be chomping at the bit to buy it.

@@ciello___8307Great suggestion, but the problem with the bolt (aside from the fact that it’s made by GM, which I personally dislike) is that it’s a bit of a penalty box (nicer in the new one but still not there, I think…) and it’s dreadful to look at. The bones are there, though.

The ARIYA is an impressive combination of "real car" features (available pano tilt n slide moonroof & sunshade) and modern EV tech (dedicated EV platform providing very roomy interior). Elegant design with high quality materials and NISSAN's unmatched record for EV safety provides a class leading choice for consumers.
