The 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x, a mid-sized pickup truck, embodies a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary design, presenting an intriguing question of authenticity versus innovation in the truck market. Known for its robust, naturally aspirated V6 engine, the Frontier emulates the straightforward capability of classic pickup trucks. Yet, it doesn't shirk modern expectations entirely, embracing features like turbocharged four-cylinder engines for fuel efficiency, wireless smartphone technology, and advanced safety systems. While it retains an authentic feel when driven, whether this traditionalism makes it the best pickup truck on the market remains debatable.

If anyone is going to properly do a reliable turbo engine it’s gonna be Toyota. These aren’t bolt on turbos these are ground up turbo designed engines. The 2023 V6 Tacoma had 265ftlbs of torque. The new one will have 465ftlbs. That’s a significant difference.

I have a '23 Pro4x and love the steering feel. Coming from a sports car with tight, stiff steering, I'm used to that responsiveness. Going down the road, it's effortless to drive and only comes into play when doing u-turns or tight 90 degree turns into parking spaces. It just feels like a beefy truck and love that about it.

Reviews like this tell us nothing. 90% of Americans use their trucks as grocery getters. For them, a turbo can make sense; acceleration and mpg. I respect Toyota, but the seats are among the most uncomfortable for taller drivers. Nissan makes a truck for those who know and appreciate a real truck. There is no replacement for displacement. This becomes very apparent when loaded 1000# while towing 5000#: any and all advantages of turbos disappear. Hard to believe, but the Nissan 6cyl will achieve better mpg and handling than any 4cyl turbo when tow/haul for days on end. Driver fatigue is much less with the Nissan: great seats. When tow/haul daily, very doubtful any 4cyl turbo will last past 100k miles: but the Nissan will go +200k. "Ask me how I know all this and more.'"😊 For a real truck, better than the Frontier is the diesel-powered Navara; but sadly unavailable in USA.

yup they are like me... Im not really off roading or need max hauling or payload I just want a decent truck but I also like ones that LOOK nice... so im down to the Ridgeline(truckette??) which is OK but offers me everything I need and a LOT more space then a regular truck..or a "regular" truck and in those I have in the past had a Tacoma(first year redesign 1995) and a 1999 and 2007 Frontier... they were fine.. but as a daily commuter back and forth to work sucked because bad MPG.. Switched to SUV for a long time even a Dodge Charger R/T AWD for a while.. but now that im retired I think the bed would be useful, MPG has gotten acceptable.. so truck time again.. Of all the ones I looked at it came down to the Ridgeline and Pro4X Frontier either would do anything I want.. I like the looks of the Frontier though vs the Ridgeline

Smooth, comfortable, functional, and definitely one of the best looking trucks out right now. Bulletproof drivetrain, with a proven engine & Trans that was out 2yrs before the body change. Got my 22 fully loaded pro4x with 15k less miles for 3K cheaper than that 2020 taco off road with minimal upgrades. Resale hold up very well for frontiers too!!!

The more I see all the new versions of midsized trucks, the more I like the Frontier. Simple is good. I personally do not like the larger and larger touch screens. I just saw a review on a 2024 Ford Ranger. Ugh. It’s a 14” screen I think. I like the 2023 Ranger better. Right now, when I replace my 2003 Silverado, I might go Frontier, or maybe the Honda Ridgeline Trailsport. Bot have NA V-6 engines. I’m old school, and I like the simplicity.

Spot on review. This is a truck from a bygone era, simple, effective, rides nicely, and is (relatively speaking) affordable, the pro4x which is really the only version to buy doesn't even come close to the MSRP of the TRDs, AT4X, Raptor (when it comes out), etc.. The only reason I didn't buy one is because there is no 4-auto, and the backseat is absolutely atrocious for space (as most mid-size trucks are). It was an outdated truck the minute they released it, but almost in a good way, its a nostalgic truck. No massive tablet, no tiny turbo engine that will probably need to be fixed after a very short time, just a nice truck all the way around. That being said i'd probably take the new Tacoma in a heart beat if i could justify spending that much, but there is something to be said for the simplicity of this truck.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with you about the back seat, dude. I got lucky and found a loaded '23 PRO-4X a couple weeks ago, and in the color I was looking for, and I LOVE IT! It drives great, has plenty of power, and looks friggin' awesome. First of all, I don't haul around a bunch of adults in my back seat, so "room" is not really a big issue. We use the back seat for extra storage when my wife and I go on vacation for a couple weeks, or for just a weekend getaway. Bad decision on your part for not buying one. Plus, I would never buy any 4 cyl vehicle, especially a truck... turbo or otherwise. Bottom line? Toyotas are way more expensive than Nissans and offer absolutely nothing to consumers that can justify it. For my money, it is no contest...the Frontier is better equipped...better looking...performs off the road better...and are...wait for it... LESS EXPENSIVE!

Give me some decent amenities but keep it more simple, I dont need 14" screens, Turbos, and tons of fancy software... I do like some tech I dont want to go back to 1999(my last Frontier) but I dont need everything to be electric or heated and cooled..seems like a bunch more to go wrong..Im actually looking at the Pro4X in a 23 or 24 because it had the V6...its simpler then the turbos and less to go wrong. I will like/take comfortable seats, still want my climate control(both sides), even heated seats, power windows, decent room and power, I dont need the one thats "the best or most" of everything and thats loaded with stuff i will never use or even want.. I think this new Frontier in the Pro4X just looks great and has what I need/want and isnt overkill. Its not a luxury car I dont need it optioned like one(GMC/Chevy looking at you here) just more stuff to go wrong 6K miles after your warranty is out..

Great review. I am just starting to look at these and am leaning towards the PRO 4X with the luxury package just to get all the features. That aside, I absolutely agree that this vehicle does truly drive like a "truck". I come from the era of Armstrong Steering and I love the steering. The touchscreen is proportionate to the rest of dash (my Gawd, that Tacoma monstrosity is horrific). I am accused of being a "dawdler" by family, so the engine/transmission combo would work well for me. My only complaint after first impressions is the way the rear seat folds forward. I have had two trucks that provided a completely flat surface when folded forward, and that has turned out to be a feature I find very useful. All in all, I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised with the Frontier; up to a couple weeks ago I had not even considered it.

I got 225,000 out of my 2002 Xterra. I'm looking at the new Frontier, but I'm thinking of even going with the new Titan. Both are great vehicles, and definitely priced much better than the competition. Also very reliable when you take care of them. I'm a big fan of the simple V6 Naturally Aspirated Engine, and I like the feel of the heavy steering. I feel like I'm more connected to the truck. And, you can find them 'used' with less than 20,000 miles for an incredible price. I'm currently driving the 2021 Chevy Blazer RS, and I'm really glad I went with it because of the feel of the Naturally Aspirated V6 and the heavier steering. I don't like the feel of the Turbo 4 cylinders or the newer/light electric steering. There's definitely a difference between them when you test drive several different vehicles.

When the refreshed frontier came out I was a little disappointed that it was just on par with the other trucks available at the time, and also worried it be way behind after all the other trucks were updated. I was expecting great things from Toyota, not that impressed at the moment. Chevy Colorado is a very nice truck and the new ranger looks very promising. I’m not worried about turbo’s but not a fan of unnecessary electronic complications. So I’m back looking at the frontier again. Nice review.

Not outdated at all...quite innovative and the heavier steering is awesome when off-roading...this a direct competitor to the Tacoma and for anyone who has driven a Toyota can tell u..their transmissions are constantly gear hunting.. the nissan transmission is super smooth. Overall the Nissan better than Tacoma and offers more in cabin luxury items with a better and more software advanced infotainment unit...

Solid truck. Solid video. However, only max payload was shared. That is not the payload on the optioned Pro4X. I bet the payload is 400 to 500 lbs LESS on this truck. I am fine sharing max payload, but share the payload on the tested truck as well. I am also a bit concerned about the safety/crash ratings of the Frontier compared to some other mid-size trucks. However, it will stay on my short-list. I am planning to buy at the end of 2024.

The problem with Nissan is they are just heavily refreshing their vehicles. They aren’t all new. Great way to save money, but the complaints the reviewer mentioned are linked to that. Nissan and Toyota sat for many many many many years not doing much for their trucks.

Quotes entry level trucks price, shows a 45-48k truck in the review LOL. These midsized trucks are not worth 40k+ no matter what package they have. I looked at a 23 Pro 4x recently to move into a smaller truck, and I ended up keeping my F150. More truck, better power, better towing, bigger interior, same fuel consumption and it only costs a few grand more.

I looked at the "new Frontier". Had a 2017 Frontier, loved it with one exception. The turning radius was horrible. The new Frontier was no better. Just as bad. That and the steering was heavy. I went with the Ford Ranger. I am not a turbo fan, liked the natural 6 the Frontier had, but the steering and turning radius on the Ranger was way better.

If the pro4x came loaded for 40k (loaded in Nissan terms I mean) then it would make sense but decently loaded they are like 45ish which just makes no sense to buy when you can get the 2024 Tacoma for similar money. Only advantage is if you like the v6 over the turbo 4

Nissan Frontier Crawl ratio 60:1 fully boxed frame Dana 44 locking rear (pro 4X) Dana front diff, Spicer transfer case, powerful VQ engine, rear disc brakes, bullet proof made in the good ol' USA. Tacoma=33:1 crawl ratio, C frame (with on going frame recalls due to corrosion) rear drum brakes, now made in Mexico, reliability declining and Toyota tax. To be honest all the new tech on the newer pick ups are failing miserably. Andre from TFL bought a Trail Boss and his LCD screen which is the tach and speedo just turned off. Sometimes less is more and I am willing to bet the new Tacoma's will be requiring premium fuel for that hybrid turbocharged 6 cylinder where the Frontier can take 87 all day. Less is more. To be honest this guy kind of comes off arrogant and prickly like he should be in a Raptor R because he just deserves it.

All the vehicles I've ever own or driven has this never happen, why did they place the button so close to the seat is beyond me. Why did they make the button smaller or molded a lip over the button that when cost only pennies. You know how much in the pain in my A** to fix my seat each time I need to drive.
