We have the same car bought in 2022. We were also looking at the Bolt which was pulled because of fire issues. After searching the net, I found only one documented leaf fire in 2015. We love the birds-eye view camera. The car which is basic old school tech and has physical buttons are refreshing and easy to master for a Luddite driving an EV. In summary, as a second around town car this car is perfect. In addition I love the metal roof, and hate all glass roofs. Our road car is a Subaru. You’re review is spot on.

Excellent review. Just straight forward information, no bashing. I would buy one and travel. I've driven my 2014 Leaf up and down the l-5 corridor. Since the new Leafs go farther on a charge I would travel again since I am not addicted to convenience. Actually I would replace the battery in my present Leaf and have an almost new car for less than the price of a new one. For those who live in the Portland Oregon area EV Rides LLC is the place to go for a Leaf battery replacement.

I have leased Leafs since 2018, and I really like the cars. The Leaf's biggest shortcoming is the CHAdeMO fastcharge standard, which has become obsolete in the US. Nissan uses CSS for the Ariya and all future US cars, and fastcharge suppliers (such as ElectrifyAmerica) have dropped CHAdeMO support from new installations. Although my 2022 SV+ can charge at 100 kW, I have never encountered a CHAdeMO charger greater than 50. It is increasingly hard to find CHAdeMO. Where available, there is usually a single plug (but there may be several CCS plugs). When America builds out the nationwide fastcharge network, it will be all CCS, since every manufacturer (except Tesla) will use that standard. At least 95% of America's EV fleet will use CCS. Leafs will be relegated to local commuter cars without the ability to fastcharge on the road. When my current Leaf lease ends, I will switch to a CCS-charged Chevy Volt. Alas.

I agree, but only to an extent. Finding Chademo isn't massive problem yet, but it's definitely something to think about for the future if you do a lot of long journeys. AC charging is no problem though and many, many Leaf drivers use this only and drive short distances. A used 1st gen Leaf can be a HUGE bargain
@davidfilmer1
@davidfilmer1 7 ай бұрын
Replying to my own comment, which was written a year ago, before NACS (the Tesla charging standard) won the standards war. Now everything will be NACS, and now CCS will join CHAdeMO in the dustbin of obsolete charging standards. NACS is a much better charging standard, and it's good that Tesla has made it open-source so that everyone can use it without being beholden to Tesla in any way. If Sony had dropped their licensing fees, BetaMax would have won the video standards war, since it was a superior format. That would have made much more money for Sony in the long run.

We just had our 2017 leaf bought back by Nissan due to battery problems ( under warranty). We looked around and contemplated replacing it with a Corolla or Sentra BUT we’re not really interested in going back to gas and mechanical parts. Our local Nissan dealer had a fantastic offer (12k off) and we had a discount code from Nissan that took the price down even more. In the end we negotiated a brand new ( with less than 50 miles on the car!) 23 SV + for a lease that costs the same as our previous car payment ( for the 2017). Feels like a significant upgrade to me!

Actually, it’s more likely a combination of 2 factors: existing inventory (of the ChaDeMo compatible BMS systems), and matching the BMS to the battery layout. In the former case, it only makes sense that Nissan would want to deploy as much of their ChaDeMo-BMS inventory as they can to make a profit from what they already have. In the latter case, ai think it came down to the fact that the Series-Parallel configuration of the LEAFs battery modules was somehow incompatible with the CCS polling system. Don’t quote me on that last one, though; it’s been a while since I researched that, and I can’t remember if it was from the actual specifications of CCS or a dissection of multiple CCS-equipped EV batteries. I’ll have to look into it again when I get my laptop back up and running.

Nice review. I get bored when people talk about design innovation because most men wouldn't recognize innovation if it bumped into them. The Leaf 1 was innovative, Nissan were criticised, the Leaf 2 is boring as a consequence. Men seem to like cars that either look like a Lambo or a tank. Personally, for me the car needs to be functional, efficient, safe, and comfortable. It's not a work of art. It's a machine that will be disposed of after about 5-10 years unless it's a classic. Most people own new cars these days for the length of the lease. I'm not going to obsess about the quality of the plastic or the lovely stitching if I can't de-mist the screen before it fogs up. Maybe that's just me..

What does it mean at minute 7:44 when you say 'one downside to immediate off the line scoot'? What is torque steer?, is it like a kick in gas-powered car?
@craigcole5497
@craigcole5497 Жыл бұрын
Hi! An engineer could explain this better than me, but torque steer is basically where driveline forces try to make the car change direction. In front-wheel-drive vehicles, or sometimes in cars with front-biased all-wheel-drive systems, you'll feel the steering wheel tugging against your grip while accelerating, typically over broken pavement or while in corners; it's kind of like the car is trying to steer itself. Engineers can reduce this or even eliminate it by making the drive axles the same length, implementing suspension designs like Ford's RevoKnuckle or GM's HyperStrut, selecting the proper tire for a suspension design or more. Thanks for watching and commenting! - Craig

I have a Leaf and honestly the seats aren't that great. They're fine as long as you're not driving longer than like.. half hour. After that you're going to start getting back pain unless you're short and thin. They're not very wide and the edges curve a lot to keep you in place so someone like me who isn't even that tall (5'7'') gets their shoulders all hunched over. Other than that it's a pretty good and (relatively) cheap car that's is very newbie friendly for first time EV owners who can use this to cut off gas prices on their daily commute.

@MylesV

@seanplace8192
@seanplace8192 Жыл бұрын
The problem is trying to find a Chademo station that can supply more than 50kW. They've very rare in the US. Although the Bolt and Mini also don't charge over 50kW. The Kona is the only one that can do over 50kW, I believe it maxes out at 70kW. Even if you charge at one of the rare 50kW+ Chademo stations, the fact that the Leaf's battery is air cooled means it overheats very quickly. So it rarely maintains that peak 100kW rate for very long.

the leaf has passive battery cooling. so the batteries age fairly quickly in comparision to the bolt. Probably hard to find at this point, but a used bolt that doesn't ahve the replacement battery would be a steel because you will get your own 100k battery warrenty. (batteries seem to last 300k on bolts unless you do tuns of DC fast charging. my bolt has 142k miles on original battery and i still get well over 200 miles per charge (original battery was smaller then the 259mile battery) so my degredation is about 5 percent in 142k which isn't bad at all. i suspect I'll have this car for 350,000 miles. if you look you can find a bolt premiere for well under 20k. I've purcahsed one for 17,5 and 1 for 18,9 this year. both with battery warrenties of 80 or over 100k

The bolt is a great little car, with tax incentives next year on used ones likely to be 4k. or if you sign up for regional alerts at certain price points you can get a used bolt for 18k most likely. the bolt will have atleast 80k warrenty on the battery. I suggest a early model, 2017 or 2018 premiere level, it has a ton of tech in it. and is a great buy. I've gotten 1 for 17,5 and one for 18,9 this year. a couple of years ago when prices werent so crazy you could just about get a new one for 19k. used for 14k. the battery cooling on the bolt means youll likely get 300k miles out of your battery. This was a good review! There's just one thing I would have liked to be included: time to full charge on an L1 charger, which is what the car comes with, or an L2 charger, which is what you find at most public charging stations in California. I've never seen a "chademo" charging station anywhere in the city I live in, so I'm much more interested in how long it takes to charge a Leaf SV+ with it's on-board L2 charger. What is the maximum charge rate? Some public L2 chargers can go as high as 9,600 watts (40 amps at 240 volts), most of them can supply 30 amps (7,200 watts), and a few older ones are limited to 20 amps (4,800 watts). Okay, I just looked this up: The "Plus" model Leaf with it's 62kWh battery takes 11.5 hours to charge on an L2 charger, while the 40kWh battery takes 8 hours. These numbers imply that the Leaf's onboard charger has a 5,600 watt maximum capacity at 240 volts, which is 23 amps. If you are using the L1 charger that comes with the car, these are all limited to about 1,440 watts (12 amps) no matter what brand of EV car you plug them into: the limit is the power capacity of the 120 volt wiring and circuit breakers in your house. So the 62 kw-hour battery in the Leaf Plus would take 62/1.44 = 43 hours to fully charge from 14% SOC to 84% SOC (the typical minimum/maximum SOC of any EV with a lithium ion battery). The battery in the Chevy Bolt is 65 kilowatt hours, so charging times for the Bolt are probably similar to the Leaf Plus for L1 and L2 charging.

You won’t be able to max it at 100 kW, or really even find a 100 kW CHAdeMO charger. The car won’t charge at a peak rate through the entire charge cycle, and from our experience the Leaf just charges slowly. The charging speed and time we quote in this video is what the manufacturer claims the time will take.

Please double check the Bolt EV pricing at the 6:35 mark. The Bolt starts at $32,495 before destination charges and $7500 rebate.

GM absolutely slashed the price of the Bolt for the 23 Model year, and is even giving buyers of new 21 and 22MY vehicles a check for the difference iirc.

No $7500 tax credit on bolt for 2022. Rebates are usually by state.

From an Industrial Designer, I find the design to be superficially fussy; and it looks less interesting than the previous Leaf designs. It just looks like a regular car with fussy details and a bad looking head light design.

Is this still using an air cooled battery, or did they finally integrate a BMS with liquid cooling in there?

Still air cooled. Ariya uses liquid cooled, at least.

take a look at the bolt. its a great little car, and used ones will still have 80,90 or 100k left on the battery warranty. if you look hard you can still find a older 2017 Premeior level model for 18 or 19k in the US. i wouldnt dream of buying a non premiere chevy bolt. they are great little cars. great range!

Nissan missed the chance again with the most experience of electric cars. The dash is drab, the screen is pre historic. CHAdeMO should be changed to to DC or CCS as std.

EVs may very well overtake ICE vehicle sales when they can do one thing...100% Charge in 10 minutes or LESS. Until then....
@mattbuie5878
@mattbuie5878 Жыл бұрын
the new ones can charge to 80 percent in 15 mins. In china there are cars that will do it in like 6 mins or something insane like that. 15 mins to me is fast enough, by the time you go to the bathroom or get a snack to bring to to eat in the car its done. People make such a big deal about charging, but in reality charging speeds ONLY matter for long distance trips. and even then, if you can start your day with a full charge, charge at lunch and charge at 1 other stop for then charging speed isn't that big of a deal. For me, at home or work. my charge takes 7 secounds. 3.5 secound to plug in. 3.5 secs to unplug. I dont think about having enough charge for my 100 mile daily driving because I know I will just have enough. as i had to fill up 2 to 3 times per week in my old honda, I'm saving close to 1 horu a week vs my ice vehicle of going to costco gas. I'm happy to have slightly slower road trips to save tons of time in regular daily life. Also save a lot of time from not having to do oil changes or other maints.
