For half the year I'm typically wearing a flannel shirt. There's nothing like the soft, warm, yet rugged vibe of a good flannel! Over the years I've gotten some great ones, and in this video I show you my favorite flannel shirts of 2022.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well and allows you to own less and own better.
Hey, what are you doing down here?

Originally, flannel was a type of fabric developed in Scotland. It was specifically a type of brushed wool fabric meant to keep one warm while wicking away moisture similar to tweed and other wool fabrics from the region. It often featured a tartan pattern but not always hence it's association with plaid.
@wilhelmseleorningcniht9410
@wilhelmseleorningcniht9410 Жыл бұрын
it was first created in Wales rather than Scotland. The tartan is probably unrelated to the original flannel, but designs similar to tartan and tartan itself especially in the 19th century have been common among working class clothing in the US and Britain (and probably other places in Europe/derived from Europe) for a long time which is more likely the origin of flannel's tartan association

If you want to dip your toe in the water of getting a sturdy, budget-friendly flannel, see if you have a TSC nearby (or check the website). They carry these Ridgecut flannels that are almost always on sale for about $25.

So glad you covered the flat head and iron heart! TFH is honestly my favorite and I agree while it's slimmer in the arms and shorter in shirt length, their flannel cuts are often the widest in the shoulders and chest.

I always look forward to the new installment of this series. I own flannels from Naked and Famous, Taylor Stitch, Gustin, East Dust, and I finally bought an Ironheart. It’s the 20th anniversary in light blue and a gorgeous shirt. Like Carl stated, it’s not worth the money, but I have no regrets buying it. It will be my last though. Bang for the buck, Gustin beats them all. American made with Japanese fabrics for less than half the price of an Ironheart or Flathead. The fit and patterns are great. You just have to wait about three months to get your product because each piece is crowd funded. We’ll worth the wait.

I second the Gustin recommendation. I have a quite a few of their shirts, and I agree they have an unbeatable value. I have four flannels being made right now, as well as a huge splurge on a deerskin Western shirt. One day I will get an Iron Heart, though. But my next non-eBay flannel purchase will be a UES Extra Heavy. I've long wondered why there are so few Gustin reviews videos on KZfaq. Carl has one of the very few, and he's the reason I checked them out in the first place.

I recently picked up a cotton flannel from Gitman vintage that I’ve been loving so far. It’s warm and thick, but unlike Studio D’Artisan or some of the other popular Japanese heavyweight flannels, it’s soft from the get-go. Made in USA, available in made to measure sizing, and they go on up to 50% off on sale at the end of the season. I highly recommend checking them out.

I just got an Iron Heart UHF on a Black Friday sale and couldn’t be happier with my purchase. As a tall and slim guy with long arms I have a hard time finding shirts that have long enough arms without also looking too baggy in the body. The fit of the IH is perfect for guys like me. I also had good luck with the Flint and Tinder Crossback Work Shirt (Huckberry) for similar reasons. The FT is a great heavy flannel too, it’s just not brushed like the IH is.

Great guide! Love that you’ve made this an annual installment. The truck finds were hilarious. Hope you had fun with it! Great looking truck too! American Giant has their flannels out and I’m planning on picking one up. Fjallraven supposedly has some great waxed canvas jackets too if you’re planning on checking out more from them. Side note, video idea - I think a video on how you would start your wardrobe or a wardrobe essentials, boot/shoe essentials, guide would be awesome. I found those really helpful when I was first really building my wardrobe in my mid 20s. Happy Holidays to you and your family, Carl!

I've enjoyed watching your flannel guides the past couple years now, Carl. Nice to see your perspective on certain flannels that I've had my eye on and those that I may not have been privy to. I'll add two more recommendations to your "watch list", possibly for the next guide update. Number one is Portuguese Flannel, who makes some really nice (and incredibly soft) cotton flannels within the $100-150 range; which I see many of your recommendations coming in at. Not quite the easiest price point to accept, but far from deciding to make your car payment, or buy a really nice shirt. Portuguese Flannel is family owned and produced in northern Portugal for multiple generations now. Their lighter weighted flannels seem to run a bit within the slim fit, or "fitted" region, however, they publish size charts for reference. I might just be growing, but I've noticed that especially for this season, I've had to upsize. Haven't noticed any shrinkage after cold washings and hang dryings. They are starting to expand into more wool and wool blended offerings as well, which ups their pricing a bit into the $200-250 range. Many (or most) of them are lined with a rayon blend, so those sensitive to wool needn't worry. I've found them solidly constructed and they produce a wealth of colorways for each season. My favorites are the heavier, double breast pocketed wares, which are much warmer than their lighter single pocket shirts. Not as heavy as the IH UHF, Freenote Benson, nor UES territory, but their coziness is unmatched straight off of the shelf, IMO. Highest recommendation. The other recommendation is just a piggyback off of what many have already thrown out and that is Vermont Flannel Co. I've worn one (and now rotating two) of their offerings to work over the past year following a happy accident of a Carhartt order gone missing last season and that turned out to be the best mistake of last year's gift giving season. Their prices are slowly creeping upwards (as everything is), however you get an American made product of very high quality for their price point. Their cotton is sourced from Portugal and is certified organic, for what that's worth. I honestly don't think there are any peers for what they offer within their range. I've read negatives regarding construction, or the fabrics falling apart or seriously pilling after short distance milage, but after one year of semi-hard wear, mine have only softened and remained strong, with very minimal pill-age. I've read an account where someone had more than 4 years of wear and their flannel was only aging better over the years, so YMMV. Their flannels fit into the middleweight category and their sizing makes them superb for layering. The consensus is to size down considerably and I stand behind that statement. I've been recently sizing up to L or XL and in VFCo sizing I'm a small and that's still cut larger than some XLs from other companies. I have noticed a decent amount of shrinkage from repeated cold washings and hang dryings on my most worn flannel of theirs, however it has only had a positive impact regarding the fit. That may just be in my instance and hasn't made me wish I would have sized up not once. If one is in the market and doesn't mind a "flannel" fitting flannel (NON-FITTED), there are serious hard pressings to recommend anything else over Vermont Flannel. Their colorways might be a bit of an acquired taste, but find one that suits your preference and I think they are more than worth their price of admission, especially in supporting a small family run company offering product still being made within the USA. As a side note, I just picked up (two) Iron Heart Ultra Heavy Flannels as my "splurge" shirts for the season. These are my first of anything from Iron Heart and the coin toss was won due to a discount being offered over the Thanksgiving deals to be had. I have to say, they may be the best put together shirts I have bought. From what I hear, UES may be the better bang for the buck, but their colorways just strike me dead. Same with the Flat Head at just a bit over the UES price, though not quite IH terrain. I have one nitpick in preference and one disappointment. The first is a personal touch I would have liked to see and that is pattern matching at the side seams. This gets a slight pass in forgiveness as they have gone above and beyond any company to match the pockets, yoke and sleeving. Secondly, the disappointing buttons. They truly do feel flimsy for the pill you swallow in forking over $300 (in my instance) for their wares. I sized up to XL (which only fits longer in the sleeves versus the Vermont Flannel Co sized small, all else being cut larger in the VFCo shirt, for reference), so whilst I won't experience the button "slipping" (meaning too "fitted", or too tight of a fit at the chest/gut) I still do feel they could have upped their buttons in at least the very least, thickness. I'm in no way displeased with my purchase, however that fact alone makes the full retail price point a point of no entry for me. To be fair, the button discussion has been widely discussed all over the web (and I'm sure otherwise), however it doesn't really quite sink in as hard until you're actually handling them in person. IME anyway. I will give a huge shoutout to Iron Shop Provisions for providing excellent professional service and personal touch for the purchase. Highly recommended retailer for some really excellent (albeit pricier and mostly Japanese made/branded) clothing. I hope the holiday season treat you and your family well Carl, along with everyone else reading. Cheers!

Great review! I came into a little back pay this year and along with some savings decided to splurge on a UES flannel (which I love). When IH dropped their new black UHF, I knew it was time to try them too. I'm in agreement with you too: if you're gonna buy one shirt to have forever, the UHF is that, but the UES flannel is a totally awesome shirt at half the price. Of course, now that I've got an UHF, it is undeniably softer and cozier than my UES shirt.

I own two of Iron Heart's ultra heavy flannels and a couple Pendleton wool flannels. As a connoisseur of western button snap shirts and flannels, I've gone through countless shirts trying to find the endgame for both of these types of shirts. Although $350 is a bit steep, I have never worn anything of such comfort and beauty that Iron Heart offers and will gladly pay that much. Nothing compares to the combination of the overall weight and the comfort of the double brush interior of these shirts. If that isn't enough for you, they even threw in those immaculate ebony button snaps and gorgeous color designs. It does not even end at their shirts though. Their heavy weight denim selection (21 oz, 25 oz) is like nothing I've ever worn. The weaves are so dense, yet so clean that once you break in a new pair of jeans, the immaculate weaves of the denim leave you with a heavy, smooth pair of armor. They even make overdyed black denim which fades into a unique gray/indigo color

Thank you for your recommendations year after year. It really helps a guy that is outside a lot in the upper north. My Patagonia Farrier is and was the best purchase I ever made. I have my carhartt midweight flannel as well. My Yukon extremes carhartt active jac is the best thing I have ever put in my body. Although with the other video my Perry whites I could not be happier. Although a few issues along the way the customer service is beyond top notch. I got my danners for the heavy Wisconsin backcountry with winter and do a review on a few when you have time! Not much for being recraftable, but the pronghorns and recurve with an insole swap are great tanks along with the danner mountain 600 as utility weapons. You have helped inform me along the way and it is a fun night beer blessing

Picked up a Fjallraven in your deep red. Really like this shirt's fit, very clean stitching, the fabric's heavier weight is just right here in Colorado. Also, this deep red has a color pattern that goes with almost every pant I own. The buttons are a little smallish and a price I usually don't, but their initial order discount got me under a hundoo. I'm 6'1'', 215lb, 45" chest & 35 sleeve, and their XL is a tailored fit. Assuming limited shrink, it's a perfect untucked fit. Thanks for your review!! Cheers

Buffalo Exchange always has racks of flannels, both newer stuff and vintage. Very good options there. You can pick up your Independent (truck company) wool flannel, J. Crew, Vans, Pendleton, Madewell, Volcom workwear, etc. Prices here in Portland Oregon are usually $12-$24. I've seen vintage Pendletons flannels there for $16. That's a pretty awesome deal if you are into that sort of thing. I sold a bunch of clothes there in the summer and have $210 in store credit, sometimes I go there and check things out. Haven't picked anything up yet, but also don't really need anything right now. One of the problems I have with brands is sizing. You can buy 2 different Vans flannels in the same size and they fit completely different. So annoying!! One thing I find funny about young resellers at Goodwill is that they pass up a lot of quality items. Seen them pass over Pendleton board shirts because they don't know the brand, LOL. I've picked up shirts/sweaters/jackets there that retail for $150-$400+ just because people don't know the brands or don't know quality garments. All the young resellers mainly want is vintage t-shirts, Carharrt and Nike and they all look/talk/seem the same. Ugh.

I’m happy to have an actual name for the Pendleton Board Shirt. I’m own three of them that belonged to my Grandfather, and are of an unknown vintage. I’m also happy to have a few Pendleton western shirts. Now that I’m done bragging, I am going to shamelessly plug John Blair Acrylic Flannel. Watch for clearance deals, where they can be picked up crazy cheap (no snobbery with these). I rode horses in them for years and they are incredibly durable, with a stupid level of color fastness. With my equestrian life behind me, they are still part of my go to winter wardrobe. The one downside is that acrylic sucks around a campfire bringing the same qualities as polar fleece to the field.

This was fun Carl. I always enjoy your content and value your opinion, but you added some new elements with the road trip. I certainly don't expect every video to have this much editing, but this was a nice addition.

Always have loved flannels. My current favorite are the Poncho flannels they’re about $100 bucks, but very high quality! Great video

If you want a sturdy, heavy, budget-friendly flannel, see if you have a TSC nearby (or check the website). They carry these Ridgecut flannels that are almost always on sale for about $25. They've been my go-to as I slowly add a few Carhartts and the occasional Duluth Trading Co. I'd go to the $100 range, but it would have to be a gift. It's tough to treat yourself to this sort of thing. :)

Great video! Loved seeing the F100! I'd actually like to see some content about the F100 and your motorcycle. Maybe a tour and explaining what work you've done to it? I know it isn't your usual content, but I think most of us here would enjoy it.

Carl Murawski reminds me of Def Jam records during the 1980‘s. Everything was great ( imo ). I gave thumbs up before seeing this video. I bought maybe 70%-80% of clothes second hand. Iron Heart UHS for 130€ -170€ in very good condition ( you definitely need patience 😊 ). What a beautiful car and leather jacket. Like always, great Video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and great taste with us 😊🍀😎👍🙏🙏!!! ❤️😘

Secondhand > new. Only time new is worth it is if you don't have the time to search for stuff. Stuff like work shoes, work pants, work shirts are always better to buy new because of the time you would spend going from store to store searching for stuff. I also don't buy that older stuff is always better, plenty of good stuff being made today. I don't care if it is made overseas or what. If it's made well, holds up, does its job and looks good then it's fine 😀

Excellent video and really beautiful truck. As requested here several times ..that truck and your followers deserve a video about it. 👍 I’ve been wearing the Pendleton Board shirts for a few years now. I love wool and they’re so comfortable and stylish. I recently acquired a short sleeved Pendleton wool which is an awesome piece. For the traditional flannel I go back to my source for most of my life.. LL Bean. Priced right and so well made. but those shirts you reviewed are pretty nice. No way I’m dropping $350. on a flannel shirt though.

UES is my favorite. They have an extra heavy weight flannel as well, of which I have 2. The cost is less directly from Japan. They ship internationally with DHL and arrives as fast as Amazon prime.

Flannel and wool shirts are the best part of fall winter and early spring attire.... Pendleton has always been the standard along with Woolrich. Also Duluth and Carhart. But a couple that slip in and get overlooked. Are the shirts from Bass Pro... Redhead. They have a great variety of choices from heavy weight to a light weight. All very well priced and very well made especially for the price point. Another is the Ridgecut a Tractor Supply brand. Good heavy to medium weight flannel. With a affordable price and you, as with the Bass Pro brand, get a lot of bang for your buck. In a well made good fitting and durable shirt. For work and or play ... casual or casual dress during a cold or crisp winter day or evening. Solid or plaids. You can wear them with a pair of jeans and boots. Or a pair of trousers and winter shoes with a sport coat for a evening out... or chores... or just relaxing around the fire pit and in the company of good friends. Quality shirts at an affordable price. 👌

For a nice, heavy, budget flannel, TSC (Tractor Supply Co.) carries Ridgecut. It's a little stiff initially, but it's sturdy and almost always on sale for about $25 - about the same price as the cheap, thin flannels that crap out on you after the first wash.

I picked up 10 or 12 in the last year. All from Goodwill or the Goodwill Bins in North Portland by the airport or the Sellwood part of Portland. The inspiration came from the NOFX video "Doors and Fours" music video of 1980s punk rockers wearing flannels. The footage is actually from a 80s punk movie called The Slog Movie from 1982. The North Portland Goodwill has a lot of douchey teenage/early 20's hype beast resell douches a lot of the time. The Sellwood location has more artsy/hipster type of crowd. Summer is a good time to buy flannels, not a lot of competition. The Goodwill by my house sells them for $7.99 usually. If the tag is still on the item it might be $9.99-$14.99. I don't recommend Old Navy, Target flannels. A lot of times the fabric is very thin. The used Volcom, RVCA flannels I have are very nice. I guess they are around $70 new. I got them for about $1.50 or $2 at the bins. Not really into Pendletons, they are fine, just not my thing. I've owned some vintage ones from the 1960s and got rid of them.

I have wanted a Iron Heart flannel for years, but the price is as you suggested eye watering. I tried on a UES heavyweight at a local stockist, and have ordered one from Japan. I should have it in the next week. I would say it is 97% of the flannel at 50% of the cost.
