Some talk about recent pressings of classic SST releases
I forgot to mention in the video that Black Flag's The First Four Years is also no longer using the original cut. The current version was cut by John Golden.

Hmmm. I missed this episode Ian. Fantastic as always. About 6 months ago a local shop tipped me on a collection they just purchased. It included Husker OGs in mint condition - To say the least I was thrilled and was able to purchase at a fair price. Glad to see these are available and super curious about RTI! These guys will never have a “victory lap” like Westerberg and Tommy did so it’s important to have their catalog available for posterity’s sake.

i know this may be older video. latest issues i've had with ordering from sst. they use "mutt cuts" one being double nickels by minutemen. disc 1 is a cd cut from dave cheppa(missing cool stuff on side 2), disc 2 is the OG analog k-Disc pressing from the 80's. it's a mix bag with em. if ya got lucky and order earlier.. you got a great deal.. nowadays.. just dave cheppa cd cut's/mutt pressings. the owner likes bleeding these things till they die...

Interesting, I thought this Cheppa cut sounded pretty good, but I'd definitely like to get an original K Disc cut and compare. Disc 2 does not appear to be a K Disc cut on the copy I have.

I've had a copy of Zen for maybe 15 years and I'm not sure what version it is, but it's quiet and although as you say it's not audiophile for sure, it's certainly punchy & jumps out of the speakers. I saw the Grant Hart doco & he said that they never made a cent & continued to not make a cent. All of my SST records all sound pretty good to me, except some of the Black Flag albums. I'm sure it has more to do with the recording than the pressing or the mastering. The First Four Years & Damaged the sound really kicks. Musically too. Cheers...Ben

The copy you have almost certainly would've been pressed at the now-defunct Rainbo Records plant. It was very hit or miss with them when it came to noise. They were perfectly capable of making food records, though, so if you got a clean one, you were all set. I had a ton of 90s pressings from SST in my old collection and the ones that were clean sounded probably as good as those recordings could sound.

@@brokewithaudiophiletaste6076 Yeah I'm pretty happy with my copy. I'm like you who loves all of the punk/indie stuff and regardless of the lo-fi aspect wants it to be as close to the source as possible. I don't think some people get that even though it's considered lo-fi, it can still sound great if it's mastered well off the tapes & the pressings are decent. Like those GBV SCAT reissues. They sound great. Just because it's lo-fi doesn'.t mean you have to listen to a noisey record. Just one man's opinion 👍

Woh! The deadwax of the Husker Du tells a ton, and I’m kinda surprised by it. I’m also pleased with it. A lot of reissues that were originally pressed at Rainbo have moved over to GZ and now RTI? I think you’re probably right about the noise issue in that it’s time to possibly remaster the album, even though I’m glad to know it’s from the original metal parts.🤷‍♂️ Look at Smashing Pumpkins, “Siamese Dream”. There’s a vid out there comparing the original pressing to the more recent remastered pressing, and the remaster shows more dynamics. Are they that audible? Not really…. That album is a wall of sound anyway. The remaster was originally pressed at Rainbo, and are now done at GZ. I had both, and sold the Rainbo one due to how noisy it was. The newer GZ pressing is dead quiet and sounds great. Best vinyl copy of that album, imo. I gave my original to a friend for his b-day, cuz he’d been hounding me for it for years. All that being said, I do like the original pressings of a lot of those 90’s records, but they don’t always sound great, as vinyl was of course secondary then. Yes! “Everything Went Black” has been a favorite of mine and was the first Black Flag record I ever owned. Still prefer Dez and Keith to Rollins on the early stuff, but albums like, “Slip It In” are just classics. I’ve got maybe a 2nd or 3rd press of both, which is fine with me, as that’s not exactly a record you listen to in part due to its sound quality…lol Thanks for another fantastic video. It’s always nice to see people who grew up listening to similar music. Also, FWIW, if you don’t already have originals, the new Bad Brains pressings sound fantastic. They’re a band I’m a completist with. Took me 25+ yrs to track em all down, but well worth it. Thanks again, Ian. I appreciate your vids. 👍🔊😊🎶

Thanks Nick! Overall I think it's really cool that new pressings are still from the original cut. It's so common for new cuts to be from inferior sources and the original cut is from an era where people knew how to make records sound good. I'd like to see more represses from original metal parts, I think it's worth living with the occasional sound anomaly to be able to hear the original mastering. But, like I mentioned, who knows how much of that even exists at this point. I'm with you re: Keith & Dez > Henry. But I like Henry too (sounds like you do too). I'm curious what happens with Milo Goes to College moving forward. It's not listed on the SST website at all (not even as being out of stock). It got recut in 2010 by the same guy that recut Double Nickels, hopefully it comes out again on vinyl at some point.

@@juliosanchez95 Hey Julio. Greetings from MA. 👋🎶😊 Which wasn’t pressed at RTI? You said “these”. The Husker Du has the inner sleeve that RTI uses, and that’s why I asked. Rainbo was bought by URP in late 2019, so a lot of records that would’ve been pressed there went to either GZ or RTI.

I'm shocked that Greg is using RTI. That's seems antithetical to his "squeeze the most cash out of these with disregard to the product" ethos he has seemed to be operating under since forever. I still wish all the bands that matter (Husker Du, Descendents, Minutemen, etc) would reclaim their catalog and remaster it and get better quality release for them.

I was shocked too! I'm actually impressed with the quality of these three records, at least, especially having experienced what SST was putting out in the 90s. I'm with you about Huskers, Descendents and Minutemen, would be great to see new presentations of this records.

Husker Du, Sugar, and Bob Mould solo masterings were never very good, totally not dynamic. I have avoided buying Zen Arcade on vinyl but may check it now...the remaster of Sugar's Copper Blue is supposed to be sensational on vinyl (shopping it this week). Great vid, subscribed!
