2023 Revisited - Top 5 Light, Medium, and Heavy Games

We have finally managed to play everything we wanted to from 2023 and with the announcement of the Spiel des Jahres finalists and the awarding of the Golden Geeks for 2023 it seems like a good idea to revisit our best of the year. But top mix things up, since we already did a Top 10, we are doing 3 Top Fives and splitting the games into light, medium, and heavy. So we will have three top board games of 2023.

I watched your Voidfall video when my husband expressed that he was 4X curious. We have handle a weighty game, our issue is making sure it would be fun for us as a couple… you seem to have cleared up our concerns on that front!

It is one of the few 4X games that works perfectly for us because we like fighting bad guys, but not necessarily each other. So it rides that middle ground well. Just have a full free day and a good nights sleep before you learn it.

I just opened and unboxed White Castle this weekend, looks great. Do you guys keep the bridges built when packing it back up?? I had to perform some very calculating maneuvers to close that box after and it was TIGHT haha

Yeah, we're too scared to take them apart. But if you Tetris is just right, they can fit still assembled.

Great video. The only game I played from those lists is Forest Shuffle and the ones I want to try most are Apiary and Voidfall. I do Distilled even though I wasn't able to get it to the table yet. I worked at the only booth that sold Distilled at Essen Spiel last year and it was CRAZY. We had the English and the Dutch versions of the base game and the first expansion and people bought them like there was no tomorrow.

Also I agree with your medium #1. White Castle is such an amazing design. Got it 3 weeks ago and already at 35 plays with ny wife. My only gripe is that at 2 olayers the Heron action to move up the time track is too weak in a 2 player game. That action is very useful at 3 and 4 though

That is fair, but we are kind of intense about going for 1st player so it gets a weird amount of use for us.

@AlliesorEnemies how far up have you made it on the track? I made it to the first circle on the 6 section. My high score is 73 but usually it's around 55 points

I'm not sure, I can tell you we both tend to score in the high 40s or low 50s. 73 is pretty impressive!

Album is a weird one: Sonic Nurse. It's just because I always listen to it when sleeping in a car or a plane so it instantly chills me out. Though prior to that I would have sadkid Jet Set Trash No Star Song would be Androgynous Mind. I love the build to complete chaos.
