Yep, we filmed this video before Rivian announced the refreshed R1S, but because most of this applies to the post-refresh model, we decided to go ahead with the video!
Bottom line, unless you really really want a family friendly EV SUV to go 0-60 in bonkers times, you'll be just fine with the "regular insane" times of the dual motor R1S.

I have 2023 R1S quad that I bought 8/2023 now with 15,000 miles. It’s my first EV and was very skeptical about owning one but since I got the old pricing and all the reviews seemed positive along with having a 7 day buy back program I gave it shot. I’ve had Zero issues other than 1 camera replaced. I drive in all purpose mode running all 4 motors, not conserve mode. I drive 300 miles every weekend in going in excess of 80 which I’ve heard causes an EV a lot of drain due to the one speed gearbox and aerodynamics. Yet I still get 275 miles of range so much less range loss than I assumed since driven at normal speed it’s 288 miles. In conserve mode it says 318 or 320. As far as the lower rear hatch not being power operated I find that 90% of the time when opening the top hatch I don’t drop the lower. Huge advantage inside the garage. You don’t have to worry about the extra space behind the vehicle to open up the hatch, the lower portion is very easy to lift up when needed. I look as the lower hatch being manually operated as something else not to fail. I also have a 2022 full size Range Rover that has a motorized split tailgate and don’t miss the feature on the Rivian. I drive and enjoy the Rivian more than the new Range Rover P400 which cost me almost $35,000 more. I have an early production R1S and couldn’t be more impressed. I feel like Rivian is building a very solid vehicle not only for a new manufacturer but compared to any. If considering an EV test drive one, very quiet, handles corners great and leaves everything sitting at the light. Tows my toys great. My paint, trim and interior still look new. I’m also amazed at all the updates and features that they’ve given me for free with over the air updates. I never knew so many things could be added and changed via software updates. Customer service is 24/7 and are very helpful with questions. Most service if needed can also be done via mobile where they can come to your home or office. Another positive No more oil changes, spark plugs, and brakes repairs due to 1 pedal driving.

Customer service is superb but a little bit wired too. They responded very quick and instruction provided is also informative. But I’m always feeling that I was taught to debug/fix my car by myself. So it shall be very attractive for DIYers. OTA updates will bring you bugs as well. However since Rivn is also on its own learning curve and keeps improving, I’m able to tolerate the imperfections. Overall a thumb up product. And yeah R3X all the way😂

Sounds like your key battery was low, however, you don't need a key with a Rivian. You can use your phone 100% with no key. I've been doing it for a year without an issue. The refresh 2025 R1S supports UWB, meaning it'll also support using things like your Apple Watch as a key. Huge power frunk and much faster charging at Tesla superchargers are two other big advantages over the Kia EV9 (when Kia finally gets access beyond magicdocks). The EV9 maxes out at most Tesla superchargers at 85kW, while the R1S can do 220kW. That's a game changer for road trips.

For commute to office should work though.

Hi, great review, I would like to add 16:08 something the review as a Dual Motor owner. The dual motor can send all the 300 horsepower to one wheel because the brake stops the other wheel on the same axle so to speak. The quad motor R1T and S can only send 200 horsepower to one wheel. So in my off-roading experience in my truck, I have more power rolling over a log while the other is off the ground. My experience. Again great review.

My wife also hated the fact that there was nosunshade I’m still trying to decide if maybe I didn’t tweak the suspension settings properly. Looking at the 2025 models, I noticed the base dual motor doesn’t have sports mode. How is the ride quality and body roll on that model compared to using sports mode? You tested the R1S 0-60 in the sport mode to get the 3.4s. Would be interested to see if you can match the 4.5s in all purpose mode. I have a 2024 R1S PDM and find that the power locked behind sport mode only kind of impractical for everyday driving as it forces low suspension mode so the ride is notably more busy.

@@privettoli I'm not a fan of one-pedal drive.
@Hirudin
@Hirudin 20 күн бұрын
Pros of one-pedal drive... 1. The chore of moving your foot 6" to the left is alleviated. 2. Technically, braking might start a fraction of a second earlier as the time it takes to move your foot 6" is eliminated. Cons of one-pedal drive... 1. Coasting takes more concentration. (I get the impression people who drive on nearly flat roads most of the time don't benefit from coasting so the practice doesn't register as being useful. But not being useful for them doesn't mean it's not useful for others.) 2. Inadvertent braking is much easier (so happens more often). 3. Needing to slow fasyer than max regen can accomodate necessitates moving your foot to the brake pedal anyway. For those of us who are not hypermiling all the time, braking harder than max regen is common, so moving our foot becomes common as well (negating the purported advantage of OPD). 4. I assume OPD encourages left-foot braking, something that I was taught to avoid (though I'm not sure of the logic behind this convention). Many BEVs have the option to disable OPD - vehicles without the option are objectively inferior (this includes ICEVs that don't have the option of enabling OPD). Tesla and Rivian could give their customers the option if they wanted to, but they don't.

Also I’ll probably never have to replace my brakes and if needed to be used the brakes are huge.

Seeing this review just justifies the decision to buy the EV9 for me. Off road ability is completely unnecessary for me. The EV9 is fully capable of gravel roads and light dirt off roading, which is more than I need and would probably suffice for 90% of people who think they need an off-road vehicle. The extra performance is completely unnecessary for me. Ev9 gt-line still has enough power to dispatch most of the sports and muscle cars on the road and more than enough to deal with any daily driving situation you might encounter, even with a full cargo load or towing a trailer. Ev9 has a smaller battery than the standard pack in the r1s, but based off of your testing, the ev9 gets between 20-30% better highway efficiency, which completely negates the battery size difference. Rivian has notoriously poor fast charging, especially in warm weather, the ev9 has better charging performance in all conditions so it will be better for road tripping vs the standard Rivian pack. The ev9 also appears to have much more passenger space, especially in the 3rd row. The ev9 has plenty of room for 6 adults on a long trip (which I’ve personally tested) whereas the Rivian looks pretty tight. 3rd row looks sized for children only. Ev9 doesn’t have air suspension but it does have load leveling rear suspension on the gt-line, which is going to serve the same purpose as what most would want from air suspension (no squat when towing or hauling). Serviceability is also a major consideration that few people seem to think about. I live in a major metro area and the closest Rivian service center is an hour away. It’s nice to have options, but if you’re looking at the absolute base model R1S, I think the EV9 would be the better option for the majority of people in that situation.

Drive both I did and went with Rivian quad. Rivian also offers mobile service and they are building new service centers quickly. Kia is cheaper but also drove and felt much cheaper. Rivian has a big frunk and lots of storage under third row. ( not sure if Kia has any storage under third row. I also felt the R1S was more solid and seemed just as quiet if not more so. I’m 5’9 and feel like I’d fit in the rear seat fine for around town but not long trips. I didn’t sit in the 3rd row of the Kia since it be rarely used in my case. Also range , towing and power is less with the Kia and didn’t handle anywhere near the R1S especially in sport mode. but the Kia advantage is its cheaper. The Rivian is also my first EV and have had no range anxiety on trips. Both great choices.

@@costaricasurf66 almost every single major car reviewer has commented on how gen 1 R1S isn't smooth. It's suspension is not tuned well and also is noisy and clunky. On the other hand all the reviewers are praising how well the EV9 rides and how smooth it is. EV9 is definitely the better EV for families. Only thing Rivian does better in the family category is it offers a massive frunk which is nice if you use all 7 seats. But in terms of passenger space, captain seats, and road tripping, price, the KIA is equal or better.

@@ayushmalpeddi2793 And how old were those reviews that you were referring to. You may not even know there’s been two software updates one just last week that also adjusted the suspension settings in many ways Also, I guess you’re gonna take the advice if someone who probably drove the vehicle less than a couple hundred miles. Didn’t have the time to understand the multiple settings in each drive modes and how it will affect the performance of the vehicle. That I saw seemed to sport mode or conserve mode( this is bad as it turns it into fwd only I never drive in this mode). And/or they kept in suspension mode in firm, not medium or soft. It took me about a week to realize that all purpose, standard height and soft suspension mode smoother out everything. as far as understanding, what a smooth ride is I also have a 2022 new generation full-size Range Rover P4 hundred and I traded in a 2020 Genesis G90 V8 which is probably one of the smoothest cars I’ve ever owned. I’ve also owned a jaguar J ,several BMW seven series , Mercedes GLS. Is the R1 as smooth as any of those no is it jerky and unrefined absolutely not I would’ve gotten rid of it in the first seven days and profited. I wouldn’t buy an SUV only for a smooth ride in the space in the third row. If I wanted that and was looking at it primarily as a family hauler and not price, I would just get a Kia carnival that would be superior to both of these options in those regards. But I wanted something fun to drive , tows over 7000 pounds, 0 to 60 in 3.1 seconds, adjustable suspension with 15 inches of clearance for trails and that has great real range, along with great cornering ,handling and unmatched off-road performance. 1 or 2 db noise difference will not bother me but being bored would. But that’s why they make options and there’s plenty to choose from just giving you an owner perspective and pointing out service is zero issues I’m 4 hours round trip but have 3 to choose from but I haven’t needed to go to them. The one time I had a minor issue they came to my office and handled it quickly. I’m also used to having to drive few hours to get my vehicles serviced since there’s not a Jaguar , Land Rover or Lexus dealer any closer to me than a Rivian service center Not trying to change your mind hope you enjoy the EV9 and the Kia service center. I’ve heard nothing but complaints from Kia Hyundai owners about their service and I can tell you that from being a Genesis owner love the car but the service was horrible

And yes they recently had a software update that helped to smooth out the suspension but it's still not as good as gen 2. My family does have a preorder voucher so we are gonna get the Rivian. But if we didn't, the KIA is a better fit and better value. The off-road stuff is amazing but utterly pointless for 95% of the population as well are some of the other features. It's an amazing SUV but for families with younger kids the EV9 is just better all things considered. Especially for the price where KIA dealership are giving big discounts on EV9s. As much as i like the Rivian's design, i would not buy one. For an everyday driver the power and the off road capability is overkilled. I see a lot of R1S and R1T which may never see any mud in the Bay Area. We tried a R1S and got really disappointed. Road noise, wind noise, glitchy everything. Not comfortable. The third row is basically a wood bench for the evil mother in law. The charging pad has been an issue since day one. For the price i would not expect to have to DIY one. When driving it feels like a tank. The cameras are not very good. etc ... We went for a Kia EV9 GT Line. This is night and day. Yes the frunk is smaller 😅 But compared to everything else that's nothing.
