I also love being in here, it's full of interesting things that I've found along the way, and a bunch that iv'e made as I love miniature museum models and dioramas. I grew up in apartments, and we couldn't really put things on the wall, so when we bought out first home, I got a room for my den, and a table saw for the garage. I started building Leonardo da Vinci models instead of cabinets like you might think. Ive always been fascinated by miniatures, and as I got older, I wanted a place to look at everything, and build the model, diorama, and display in one place. We built the shop in 2012, it's 20 x 32 ft, with 10 ft. ceilings, the office is 10 x 10 ft. Some of my favorite scenes in movies are the rooms like in Sherlock Holmes, and that's a big part of what I am trying to build. I worked in software, so doing something with my hands on the weekends was amazing, and now Im able to build Dioramas full time. I would be happy to do a video of the books! I have the following categories; True Adventure/Exploration, History, Biographies/Autobiographies, Art, Science Fiction/Movies, and Reference mostly in the skill trades. I love books, and while I look up plenty on the internet, I cherish the fact that I can open a beautiful book and get a real experience out of it, not someone else's impression of it, (well,I think you know what I mean) I'm editing today but that would be a fun longer video as I just did a big cleaning of the office, so give me a little bit to work that in. Oscar, (who I believe you are referencing in the video) was my 20+ year old cat that passed earlier this year. He lived in the shop from the day the land was cleared next to the house, I have a picture of him doing his best palace cat impression right in the middle of the leveled gravel. As soon as the walls went up during the build, Oscar got onto of the walls and ran around the top 10 ft up in the air with out a care in the world. He was my best bud and we sure do miss him. His protege' is Ghost who is 2 years old and is slowly moving into the shop after Oscars passing. Both Oscar and Ghost were strays as we live in a wooded area and unfortunately sometimes people drop cats out here. In Oscar's case he showed up shortly after we moved here and adopted us, and was the greatest shop cat ever. That you again for such a nice note, and I am so glad you like the shop!!! Totally agree, I have to have a conversation with my wife about when I can depart for the shop on holidays, because half the family follows me and it's great. I have a PS3 and PS4, one in the shop and one in the office respectively, so the older kids are in there, and the old timers like me are talking tools, cars, and telling stories from back in the good ol' days... It is a nightmare to dust, and when I pull something down from a shelf, it's two toned....the bottoms are fine, but the top is completely covered just as you would expect, the planes hanging from the ceiling are just caked on with multiple layers of thick wood dust!!! Thanks Steve!!! It is an amazing place, and I still just think. "How did I get here??" It's 32x20 feet and the office is 10x10. We had it built by a local homebuilder, and he just did a really nice job. I also chose 10ft ceilings so I had plenty of overhead room, (that was my father-in-laws suggestion) and its nicely insulated to heating and cooling is all done with portable heaters./AC. I really love being in here during the winter, no feelings of why am in while its nice outside...but Summers are pretty amazing too as I can model in the yard and just run in if I need a tool or machine. I'm feeling very blessed. I hope you have a wonderful holiday full of family, Friends, and Models!!!! Bill

For me its a very long journey, and the shop will continue to be my "main project" until frankly, I cant do it anymore... I continuously change and move things to get just what I want, and area's like the model building corner are well overdue for an upgrade. Thanks Samuel!! I absolutely love my shop, and since it's only me, I can keep it pretty clean. I do have to take stuff down from the ceiling once in a while and dust it because it does build up there quite a bit. I have a single hose off the Jet, and it goes to a junction I created for the table saw or the downdraft table. Right next to it is the lead for the router table, and I use another connection for the sanders and lathe. I'd like to design an integrated system, but being so small, Its not a bad arrangement as is. Take Care, Bill

The grey light I call my Captain Nemo light as it was inspired by the movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea from 1954. Great movie and a wonderful design. Thanks Ken!!! Now add photo and computer gear to the mix!!! I agree, it's a crazy thing to do out here, especially painting and finishing. It's mostly due to not doing quite as much woodworking, although I did do all these things for years in here and it just comes down to frequent cleaning and venting when cutting certain materials. Raw lumber is bad enough, but when I cut MDF, thats the worst. The fine paper dust gets everywhere if I don't vent the shop, meaning I have a strong fan mounted in a window and there is a corresponding window right across the middle of the shop, and when I am cutting and sanding I have that pulling air through the shop. It works pretty good, but I still get lots of dust that I have to actively clean up. To date I only have the Jet dust collector but it has the 1 micron filter so it does a good job. I also built a downdraft table in my Table Saw's outfield table, so that really helps a lot. Eventually the Model Building will get a new space as I expand, I have a plan to double the shop size so I can have dedicated cutting and finishing rooms away from all the electronics and photo gear, as well as my Model and Diorama building. I got it from Andy's HHQ when he got that truck in, I have an idea for it but not sure when I'll start, I always want to do a diorama for stuff and I think it would need to be in a coffee table or something and my wife hasn't signed off on that yet...

It was a dream for over 50 years, and in 2012 we were able to build it!!! I'm a believer of manifestation, and I just always kept it in my mind, and think thats why it eventually happened. Models are pretty easy to start and stop...When I was working for someone else it wasn't something I could do during the week, I was too worked up from the day, (you get it) but the weekends were full shop time!!!

I tend to clean quite a bit more now that im filming to be sure, but I always cleaned as thats one of the ways I pause in a project to think about the next part, sharpening being the other. I don't build off plans, so I have to figure out things along the way, and cleaning is a great time to figure out what's next, or how to fix what I just totally hosed up. On the practical side, I have 2 windows directly across from each other, so I can set up a cross breeze with a fan in one window blowing out, and "Vent" when I'm cutting super dusty stuff like MDF, or Cedar. I upgraded to a 1 micron can filter on my dust collector, and instead of ducting, I move the single hose from the collector to a zone, where I have a couple gates, (Tablesaw/Downdraft table/Router) or sometimes the individual machine like the jointer or Planer which create so much chips and dust I pipe that direct to the collector. I always thought I wanted a dust collection system with ducting, but thats a lot of space and also a lot of joints to seal off to not lose suction/CFM. In a small shop like mine just a good shop vac and my single Jet dust collector do pretty well, but I would like an air cleaner, and then just commit multiple times during the project to clean. I will clean and even put away every tool where it goes, then pull it back out just to have a clean work area, and I rarely leave it dirty overnight because Oscar has the potential to get into something if I'm not careful. Thanks Jordymc1999!!! The stain is Cinnamon from General Finishes. It's water based and I used A LOT! I started with a pre-conditioner from them before staining, (Poplar will blotch) then applied the cinnamon in quite a few coats to get the dark tone I wanted. I also used some Ebony stain in my modeling airbrush to darken the corners and add some faux knots for interest. I finished it with a clear poly, and its held up for years now. The finish was pretty expensive, and while I saved from buying Mahogany or a similar deep reddish brown wood, It was triple what I would normally spend on a finish due to poplar being as white as pine in some cases. I think I did a video on it, I will check. Take Care, Bill

Hi Link!! The early wings are all Bubinga. When I first started woodworking I would buy scrap wood from a barrel at the Rockler wood store in Seattle who had cut-offs from a local instrument maker. Lots of the shapes that I followed were based on the cut off's from a cello, or bass neck. That is a Ham radio, it's a 1944 Hallicrafters SX-28A from my father in law from when they downsized.
