Darrel, The annual Smash or Pass seems pretty popular. Have you considered a retrospective? Presumably you will read many of the Smash novels. It would be fun to have a fast summary of them: see which ones retained their Smash rating & which ones failed. You could do a quick review of the 2022 novels for us. It would be interesting to see which novels measured up to their back cover summaries.

The thing about Tchaikovsky is he’s able to slip into different writing styles. You’d never guess that Cage of Souls, Children of Time or Bear head were all written by the same author.

I appreciate how much you enjoy the technicalities and the science of science fiction. It’s one of my favorite parts, which is why I enjoyed Excession so much.

"The Mimicking of Known Successes" would have been a great name for a ship in one of Iain M. Banks' books.

FYI - Critical Mass is the sequel to Delta-V Same for the Ken MacLeod book - it’s also a sequel. Same for Furious Heaven - another sequel. Same with Fractal Noise - also another sequel.

I've read Children of Time, Children of Ruin, and Children of Memory back-to-back-to back over the past month ~ finished Children of Memory this morning. Absolutely loved each book, but I think that Children of Memory is my favorite. Spectacular series 👏👏👏💚💙🧡

Alistair Reynolds, Yellowstone, Dreyfuss : Shoemaker-Levy Super SMASH. Bang Bang Bodhisattva, every cliche of cyberpunk wrapped in the trendy, vacuous mores of the nano-now: Projectile Vomiting Pass. Entertaining as ever.

I'd love to see what you thought of the Spiral Wars series by Joel Shepherd. Lots of world-creating that is I think even more in-depth than the Culture series.

Blurbs, elevator pitches and "Famous author recommendations": I ignore them. I try to base an opinion off of 3 star reviews since they aren't *cut and paste* like most 4/5 star reviews and you have to remember if you gave a person on Goodreads a book with blank pages it would get at least 4 stars. 3 star reviews: The reviewers tend to like the book, but mention a complaint they've had with the story/prose. The Scourge Between The Stars was on my *want to read* . (\0_o/) Great content.

I have a feeling that you did a smash/pass on "The Landing" already as it sounds familiar, though I could have seen it somewhere else. It does sound like a good story so will keep an eye out for this one 👍

Good question. Black Milk is more space opera sci-fi while Delphine Descends is more character led and political. So I guess it depends on your tastes. Hope that helps and you enjoy whichever one you choose.

🌎 I Passed on “Frontier” at the exact same moment you did, and so burst out laughing at the tidiness of that 😆I also skipped past Tchaikovsky and Reynolds as they are insta-buys for me. I’m an SF boy that watches a diet of Fantasy on #BookTube, so lots of these fair appealed to me.

SMASH: Ann Leckie 'Translation State', Yume Kitasei 'The Deep Sky', Annalee Newitz 'The Terraformers', M.R. Carey 'Infinity Gate', Ken Macleod. Mega smash anything by Adrian Tchaikovsky forever. Maybe smash Quantum Radio. PASS all the rest. Would have smashed Paolini but still burned by his shitty foray into sci-fi 'To Sleep in a Sea of Stars'. Oh, 'Fractal Noise' is part of the same series. Yeah rage pass that. And thank you for sie laughs in the last part of your video 😂😂😂
