3.0 Duramax Diesel Silverado and Sierra 1500 LM2 LZ0 - Rolled past 15,000 miles on the 2023 Silverado High Country with the LZ0 Duramax Diesel. A few hiccups along the way but this is my favorite truck out of all of them, so far. Special edits by Gavin, my son, otherwise known as "Flost" here on youtube.

I purchased the LT, 4x4, with Z71, 3.0 LZ0 in March. I do not tow., daily driver. Just now reading 10.000 miles. Def usage is not an issue with my truck. At about 7.500 miles I bought the Walmart box of def for about $10. It was reading about half full and that filled it back up. It’s at about 3/4 a tank now. So honestly no worries about def for this truck. Fuel mileage is around 25mpg all around. This truck is %100 stock. I changed the break in oil at 1.500 miles, again at 5.000, and just now at 10.000. Has not burned or used a drop of oil. Dipstick always shows in the full mark. I always fuel up at the same place. I do not use any fuel additives, and plan on changing fuel filter when needed. This truck is comfortable riding, easy to maintain, fun to drive, and fits the needs for me and my family. I plan on keeping it as long as there are no issues or problems. Would recommend to anyone looking at the 5.3, or even the 6.2. When late at night, and not using the air conditioning, Iam getting 30 + mpg on the highway. Pretty remarkable for a full size truck. So far, so good!

@michaelmcmillan2119 ..... I have the same truck... 22" wheels 4 X 4... RST... Diesel... Pulled my Sea Hunt 229 Ultra to Florida from NC and it drank DEF like no tomorrow... Gave me false readings stating DEF tank was empty while it was 3/4's full or better... Definitely drinks DEF under tow versus while not in tow... Otherwise I love it... Dealer tell you something is wrong with your DEF readings... ??? While NOT IN TOW... My truck lasts multiple full diesel fill ups prior to having to add DEF... Great truck overall... I love how she drives and rides on highway... Super smooth with a powerful pull... !!!

Don’t worry about fuel mileage, at 60 mph, on a flat highway I was getting just over 40mpg in a 50 mile loop. Hardly worth trying to get more. Towing my 7000 lbs RV trailer (30 foot) I was getting between 12-15 mpg or about 50% higher than my Avalanche with the 5.3 V8.

I have a 2023 LTZ with the Max Tow and the 3.0. Its a bit of a unicorn. I love that the Max Tow on the LTZ came with the HD mirrors. You gain a big blind spot but for towing and backing they are awesome. You lose a little mpg with the Max Tow because you get a lower gear in the rear end. I avg 25 to 29 without a trailer and 13 to 15 with a 28' enclosed car trailer around 6500lbs. Although some mods drop temps on the trans the stock equipment does just fine. All parameters well within operating ranges for the oil and equipment. I have over 4000 miles towing in high heat and humidity. I did use 1 qt of oil in between the new and the 1st oil change. None on the second. Def useage at first lasted well over 3000 miles on a full tank without a trailer and dropped by 2/3rds with the trailer on. However, the DEF useage has been improving (going down) as more miles have been put on the truck. Engine is awesome. If it ends up being durable I honestly cant come up with a reason to get the 5.3 or the 6.2 in a halfton. Its velvety smooth and gets great mileage.

What I remember from the tech specs is max tow increases payload by 30lb I think? (Or decreases…either way it wasn’t much). 1650+ is still quite respectable. I think if you don’t get max tow, you can get the off-road packages. Odd you can get both with GM’s. This engine is perfect for my needs (on paper) and I want to order a loaded 3.0 duramax equipped RST double cab, but I am terrified of all the issues owners are reporting. I am not a patient man so I don't have the disposition to deal with a bunch of problems, especially since this would be my only vehicle. I worked at GM for 15 years so I'm well aware of their unfortunate quality failings. That said, I still want to give this LZ0 a chance because it really is a fantastic engine on paper. However, having driven Japanese vehicles exclusively for the last 12 years or so, I'm not use to dealing with a lot of quality problems. In fact, I've only had 1 warranty claim out of all the Japanese vehicles I've owned, a grill shutter fault on my 2017 Subaru. I desperately want GM to be better.

I love this engine. I’ve been leasing f150’s with the 3.5L ecoboost for 10 years and am buying my next one. Since 21 the ecoboost is insanely reliable but like the rest of the gas engines it’s not great on fuel everyday or towing my holiday trailer. This engine speaks to me but I’m also scared of longevity and DEF related issues. Being a truck driver I know how much of a headache def can be. I have a 23 f150 platinum on order but am considering these. The 2 things holding me back is the DEF and that GM still uses metal panelling and after 10+ years will probably rust.

@@RobVarley Fortunately, the emissions system is one aspect of this engine that most experts believe GM got right. There have been no complaints from owners that I can find about emissions issues or any problems with the DEF system. @@dlg5485 I’m sure it’s great in theory and would work in perfect conditions and if wiring doesn’t fail. There’s already known emissions wiring chaffing problems I found today. If I were leasing or planning on upgrading in a few years I’d definitely go this route. Since I put on low miles, 8000 a year, I’m buying my next one and keep or for a long time maybe the last truck I buy. I guess I have some def ptsd as well. My Peterbilt spent 2 years in the shop every 2-4 weeks for def sensors, wiring and various emissions codes. When they came out with the delete it was deleted. I haven’t had a problem since last November when it was done other than putting a new egr on 2 weeks ago. Cheers dude!

@@RobVarley Yeah, I'm excited about this engine too, but I'm trying to wait at least until next spring because I think prices will continue going down as interest rates keep going up. One thing is for sure, prices won't be going up any time soon, so it's worth waiting a bit, just in case better deals lie ahead. And I want to give GM a bit more time to refine this LZ0. I'll have to special order one too because there are very few loaded RST double cab 2024s out there, especially with the diesel. A longer bed is way more valuable to me than a huge back seat and the double cab is about $3000 cheaper. In any case, I don;t want to compromise on my configuration if I'm spending this kind of money.

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one with the chrome trim glare problem. I've gotten into the habit of resting my hand on the shifter and using my arm to cover it up on the way to work in the afternoons. Other than that, I've been pretty happy with my 2023 High Country LZ0. Fuel economy using Fuelly (22 fill-ups) is averaging 24.5 mpg. I too have the occasional radio glitch where it goes out for a second or two and then comes back and I really wish GM would figure out a new way to get HD Radio in these trucks. Other than some minor gripes (no mechanical issues, just peeves), it's been a great truck. I get in it, start it up and it just...goes.

Yeal, that radio is going to get worse. Had to replace mine. $660 Sanyo. Radio shop said Chevy keeps the bills paid there. They get one a day coming in with the radio going out. Hell I’ve had to replace my transmission at 104,000 miles and never hauled or pulled anything. Condenser and 5 thermostats as well. Take it back to the dealership and leave it. New transmission was $4500. Torque converter failure. GM knows about it but they haven’t fixed it yet. They’ve known about it since at least 2014. Watch and see.

A friend has the 1st gen 3.0 in a Sierra, it has been a wonderful truck for him over the 75K miles he's had it so far. The I6 engine is so smooth, efficient and torquey and the 10 speed transmission is great. I own a '17 Canyon with the 2.8 diesel and it is quite "reasonable" on DEF, getting around 900+ MPG. On the other hand, the 2.8 runs a metric sh%t ton of EGR to lower NOx emissions. The 2.8's heavy EGR dose really soots up the intake, oil and motor in general unless it is turned off via aftermarket tuning, which we can't do anymore thanks to the EPA. The 2.8's fuel economy goes up about 10% if EGR is turned off via tuning, with all emissions systems still intact. Interestingly, the 3.0 gets about the same fuel economy in a much larger and heavier vehicle as a stock 2.8 does in a much smaller and lighter Colorado or Canyon. How does GM get such good fuel economy from the 3.0? I bet GM lowered the EGR dosing on the 3.0 a lot compared to the 2.8, and as a result the 3.0 has significantly hotter, cleaner and more efficient combustion. The tradeoff is the 3.0 has to run more DEF to deal with the increased NOx output from the hotter / cleaner burn. I prefer the less EGR and more DEF approach, as less EGR leads to a far cleaner engine, less soot burden on the DPF, and better fuel economy while still meeting emissions requirements. Of course the best thing would be no EGR at all and reasonable DEF use to lower NOx to attainable targets in diesels, but the government won't allow that, so people tune them or fully delete the problem prone emissions equipment from their trucks. The overall effect is probably more pollution than we would have if the standards were reasonably attainable to begin with. It is my understanding the ECM on the 3.0 is quite "tune proof" though. I also haven't heard much about the 3.0 having emissions system problems like the older diesels, again this can be explained by it using less EGR. EGR is bad, very bad 😆 Given the emissions constraints it has to operate under, it seems the 3.0 really is the best that can be done, at a cost of more DEF use.

@@grouchosays The problem with the Internet is it tends to make things seem worse than they are. People with issues speak up 😆 As I mentioned in the prior post, I have a friend with the 3.0 diesel in his Silverado, another just bought a Sierra AT4 with the 3.0 as well. The AT4 is still pretty new, but the Sierra guy has pretty good miles on his, a lot of them towing his 5,000 pound trailer. His truck has been flawless and it really is a pleasure to drive and tow with. The 3.0 diesel has got some balls for sure, with lots of low down torque and if ya dig into the pedal it revs hard and really goes. I'm in Colorado and having a turbo is nice due to the elevation. The latest 3.0s have steel pistons, which a sweet upgrade over aluminum. To be honest, trucks with the 3.0 diesel are a bit out of my price range. I mentioned my '17 Canyon with the 2.8 4 cylinder diesel, it has been flawless over 80K miles, but there are lots of reports of emissions and even more serious issues online. I love my truck, but I'd avoid the "red headed stepchild" VM Motori designed 2.8 diesel. It was a great engine until GM bastardized it for America and pushed it out the door with really shitty engine and transmission tuning. My 2.8 is transformed with a Green Diesel Engineering engine and transmission tune package, but there goes the warranty. I'm at 80K miles now so it would be out of 5 year 60K warranty anyway.. I mention all this as GM did a much better job on the 3.0, which they developed in house and obviously put a lot of effort into. Have seen tear down videos of 3.0s with miles on 'em and they are remarkably clean inside. I do wish GM hadn't gone with a belt driven oil pump, and the thermostat system is stupidly complicated and apparently trouble prone on occasion. Other than those two things I really like the 3.0's design, especially the latests "LZ0" with it's steel pistons and other meaningful updates. It does have a 5 year 100K warranty on it. If my Canyon ever has a major engine malfunction I plan to get a nice simple recently refreshed and good enough for my purposes Nissan Frontier with it's naturally aspirated 3.8 V6 in a crew cab long box configuration. Fingers crossed, because I love my Canyon. The low down diesel grunt is nice, it sounds cool and it is averaging 28.2 MPG lifetime on the computer, about 7% optimistic, or a bit over 26 MPG actual, which is still awesome for a 4,500 pound 4 wheel drive truck.

But for myself and my wife being at 115k a year together, these trucks are like trying to buy a brand new E class Mercedes! I was a Chevy/GMC person. But that changed after 2019. GM is having too many issues with these trucks. Very disappointing in their quality and probably they want it that way to keep customers coming back to the service department and trading in early. Greg, first off, nice work on the videos. I think they help the rest of use owners understand our vehicles better. As I’ve mentioned in previous comments to other videos, I’m not sure why you had to install a larger transmission cooler to get to a higher running temp than my AT4 gets to stock (194), maybe I got lucky? I also regularly get 26+mpg. You and Tim both got the max tow package, what’s the GCWR on your truck? Mine and all other non-max tow trucks I’ve seen have it set at 15,000, no matter the payload, it would seem foolish to have a 12,000lb tow rating and a 15,000lb GCWR. If your GCWR is higher, what options specifically allow the increase? Is it just the rear axle and slightly stiffer rear springs?

bought my silverado 1500 duramax end of 2022 november and love it!! ive had check engine light on for some NOx sensor that would go away within a day, havent seen it since that one time though. also every time i turn the truck on and start driving ill lose audio for a second or two about 2-4 times. its weird, itll cut out all audio (radio, turn signal, etc) but only for that 1-2 seconds, but multiple times only within the first 1min of the truck turning on. not sure what causes that. over the last year ive averaged 26.3 mpg, with my best tank being 29.2 mpg and worst being 23.6 mpg! DEF ill need to refill every 4-6k miles as well depending on what im doing, and i have ~18k miles on it now.

Do you think the max tow with the 3.73 decreased your fuel mileage? I know with a gasoline engine. The higher cruising RPM’s decrease hi-way milage, especially at speeds faster then the speed limit. Going to lower gearing in any truck will use more fuel. If you want max MPG stay with 3.23 gears but if you are towing heavier loads all the time go 3.42 and if you only tow 90-100% of the time max loads go 3.73 but without a load will really affect MPG

Have a 22.5 LTZ 6.2 and really wanted the 3.0, but there were none available at the time (January 2022 )with everything I wanted so I “settled” for the 6.2 cause I worked a decent deal before these rebates became available again. Fuel economy I knew would be terrible but just casual driving I’m averaging 13-14 on a 2 inch level. Texas premium is over $4 and I’m curious as to your thoughts, would you make a move to find a 3.0? I get about 600 miles per tank with my Denali Ultimate. They have a pretty small tank too think its 22 gallon something like that. When I bought it nearly every truck had the LZ0 on the lot. At least the nicer trim trucks. All the Denali, and AT4 every one of them was an LZ0. The Ultimate I got at the time was the only one I saw online within 100 miles of where I live. They said they had a couple others come in but every other one they had was already spoken for. I saw shortly after the other 2 GMC dealers we have in town had one come in too and one was a 6.2 but they both had I think $10k tacked on to the MSRP so they can keep them. I got mine for $4k under MSRP and that was including sales tax and everything. The one dealer also had a Yukon XL Denali Ultimate I was interested in to replace my 19 Suburban but they wanted $113k for it when the same truck is like $98-100k anywhere else. Its shown on their site for like 3 months now so I guess nobody else is interested in paying $13k more than anybody else is charging for them.

Just annoying to have to fill 2 gals of DEF every 300-400 miles. Could it be from towing and having in tow haul mode? I was impressed to find out the duramax doesn’t need def for 3-4k miles when not towing. To me that’s impresssive. I think it’s all about perception. I would just deal with it.
