2023 was a year full of adventure with Slim, our Chevy Colorado ZR2! To round out the year, we ranked our favorite Top 10 adventures throughout the Southwest that made a lasting impression on us. Here's to a great New Year!
1. Buckhorn Draw Road: Snaking its way through the captivating landscapes of Utah, Buckhorn Draw Road offers a mesmerizing journey through canyons adorned with ancient petroglyphs and rock art. This off-road adventure combines natural beauty with cultural history, creating a unique and enriching exploration for those seeking the hidden gems of the American Southwest.
2. Nelson Rollercoaster: Nestled in the Nevada desert, Nelson Rollercoaster is a thrill-seeker's paradise, featuring challenging off-road trails and spectacular desert scenery. Off-road enthusiasts are drawn to the heart-pounding experience of navigating the rugged terrain, making this destination a magnet for those seeking an adrenaline-fueled adventure in the great outdoors.
3. Valley of the Gods: Offering a serene alternative to the more famous Monument Valley, the Valley of the Gods in southern Utah boasts towering red rock formations and mesas. This less-traveled destination provides solitude amid breathtaking desert vistas, inviting visitors to explore and connect with the ancient geological wonders that define this captivating landscape.
4. Bloody Basin: Immersed in natural beauty and historical significance, Bloody Basin in Arizona takes adventurers through the rugged terrain of the Tonto National Forest. As visitors traverse this landscape, they encounter tales of the Old West, adding a layer of intrigue to the exploration of diverse flora and fauna in this historically rich region.
5. Hualapai Mountains: Majestic and cool, the Hualapai Mountains rise above the Arizona desert, offering a refreshing retreat with dense forests and scenic hiking trails. Nature lovers can revel in the diverse landscapes, creating a peaceful contrast to the arid surroundings and providing a serene escape in the midst of the southwestern wilderness. Along the way, you'll find many great historic relics to explore, making it a perfect destination for off-road enthusiasts.
6. Crown King: Accessible via a historic and challenging off-road trail, Crown King in Arizona is a quaint mountain town steeped in mining history. The journey itself is an adventure, with narrow, winding roads leading to a destination that captures the spirit of the Old West and offers a glimpse into the region's past.
7. Sego: Deep within the Utah desert, Sego stands as a ghost town, preserving the remnants of a once-vibrant coal mining community. Explorers can wander through abandoned structures and artifacts. Additionally, Sego boasts intriguing rock art, with ancient petroglyphs adorning the surrounding landscapes. These intricate carvings and symbols on the rocks provide a window into the cultural and artistic expressions of the indigenous peoples who once inhabited the region, adding an extra layer of historical significance to the haunting beauty of Sego.
8. Mohave Volcanoes: Situated in the vastness of the Mojave Desert, the Mohave Volcanoes showcase ancient volcanic activity. The volcanic cones and lava flows create a surreal landscape, inviting visitors to explore and learn about the unique geological history that shaped this intriguing region.
9. Robber's Roost: Nestled near Sedona, Hideout Cave carries an air of mystery and intrigue. Tied to the region's rich history, this cave is rumored to have served as a hideout for outlaws and bandits, adding an adventurous element to its exploration amidst the stunning red rock formations of Sedona.
10. Sears Point: Sears Point is a significant cliff and archaeological site that has been utilized for thousands of years. The area is home to many archaeological remains left by prehistoric civilizations like its petroglyph site, boasting over 2,000 panels of rock art.

Green River, through Henryville/Henry Mts - Hite crossing through Bears Ears/The Abajo's - Montecello through Lockheart Basin/Chicken Corner/Kane Cr Rd - Moab through Pot Ash/up Shafer Tr/ Dubinky/White Wash to Green River. Nice video - we enjoyed the Moki Dugway and Valley of the Gods, as well as Monument Valley, Montezuma Canyon, Hovenweep, Cedar Mesa, and Moab, all from the Blanding, UT, area; funnily enough, we're headed to Easter Jeep Safari this March and already have part of our trip set up for the Wedge and Black Dragon Canyon on the north side of the San Rafael Swell! The Swell is a great place to ride/drive/hike/you name it, with slot canyons for even beginners, and tons of history and gorgeous scenery - thanks for highlighting it, and remind folks that you're only a couple of hours from Moab once you're in that area!

That was a fascinating and awesome video Glenn and Slim. I have not heard of any of these places in my near 70 yrs. What I’ve been missing. I’ll have to watch you and live vicariously through yer travels. Happy trails. 🎶 P.S. how large is your gas tank? I’d imagine you took gas with you. How much do you take? How often did you refill? What’s your mpg? Do you carry a compressor? Love the truck.

Thanks so much! Nope, we do not carry gas though not a bad idea to do so. And yes, Glenn has a compressor he carries in the truck at all times. Thanks! I think on most of them you’d be fine. The one that I wonder about is the Hualapai Mountains. That one has some narrow spots, and a few spots where a large rock had fallen and made a narrower passage. Chances are a fellow off-roader may see this comment and confirm.

Not bothered by the opinions of others until they're rude to others. Everyone is going to find something they don't like. 🤷‍♀️ Camping at the Wedge would be icing on the cake, though. One day! 😊

I went on the Moki Dugway and through Valley of the Gods this past October, both were very impressive and I’d love to go back and camp. The highlight of the drive was seeing a tractor trailer stuck on Moki Dugway. I’m still not sure how he missed all the signs on Highway 261.

how does the moki dugway, which i've only seen in films , compare to the apache trail @ fish creek ? ....which i did before it closed.........just wondering........i may yet get down there again it's really true that film can't begin to approach being there , and i miss that country so much.....20 yrs a snowbird , now nearly housebound in oregon , and come to Y.T.be reminded

Great video. I'm going to try a few of these drives. I know that you know this, but a quick note for your viewers. If you're inspired by the awesome drone footage in this video and you want to do the same, don't do it in Monument Valley. Drones are forbidden everywhere throughout the Navajo Nation. The awesome footage here of Valley of the Gods is fine because it's outside Navajo Nation land, but Monument Valley is a big no-no. Thank you to Cactus Atlas for respecting that law.
@CactusAtlas
@CactusAtlas 3 ай бұрын
Great advice. I believe they have signs there that state it being a no drone zone, but I could be wrong. Always a great idea to check maps before taking off to know where flying is allowed or forbidden regardless of flying recreationally or not. 👍

You're right. Of the three popular ways, that's the only one we have not filmed. YET. But we're also not a macho off-road channel and enjoy showing people what can be done and can't as a lot of regular folk like to see road conditions. It's all about encouraging people to explore. 😄 That and we're also big into history so we talked about Bumble Bee, Cleator, and Murphy's Impossible Railroad on the way there in the video. Funny enough, we have a video on a second route to Crown King in a couple days. 👍

Finally rode up to crown king (out and back); off the Bumble Bee exit on the 17; quite frankly, just an uninteresting ride and waste of gas (and I found no interest in CK). I might take the extended ride to Prescott; from the Prescott side. IMO, the ride out to Bloody Basin is so much better; and 4 Peaks is OK if you don't mind being shook to death on half the ride.
