Beautiful choice in music. The Italian music makes you feel like you are there. I even felt close to your family after watching the entire vid. Excellent coverage! I liked how much you showed of the ladders and refugio's that you stopped by or spent the night at. Thank you for adding elevation, hours hiking and mileage. I need to figure out what huts to stay at for the night and how far to go daily. I'm older and have my physical challenges now. Wish i did this when younger. Very helpful vid! What a happy bunch! Thank you for sharing. I plan to do the entire TMB next summer 2024!

Paul, Might you have any tips or comments on your trip that you could share? I am planning for July 2025 and will use Alpine Exploratory, Inc. (AEI) for the 11 day adventure. I will hike with my brother, but our wives will shadow us along the roadways via buses and we are hoping to stay together in villages when possible. How long in advance did you book with (AEI)? Which airline did you use and where did you fly into to start your trek? From the video were you all using day packs and have additional bags transported by the tour company each day? Any hotels to either avoid or stay? What would you have done differently? Thanks, Marty

Hey Marty, we booked with AEI in October ‘22, 9 months before the trip.

We flew United to Geneva and hired a private transfer to Chamonix. Another member of our party took a bus from Geneva to Chamonix. From Chamonix, on the first day of hiking, we rode a public bus (free) to get to Les Houches a few minutes away, to the start of the TMB. We opted for the baggage transfer service with AEI, whereby they transfer a single bag of max 15 kilos for each of us between accommodations, while we just hike carrying a day pack. We did stay in a few huts that were not accessible by the baggage service so for those nights we had to also bring our overnight necessities like sleeping sheet, toiletries and change of clothes.

The hotels we stayed at were all very comfortable. Here’s my order of preference highest to lowest … Hotel Splendide (Champex), Hotel Crampon (Courmayeur), La Chemenaz (Les Contamines), L’Edelweiss (La Fouly), Hotel Richmond (Chamonix), Hotel L’Arve (Chamonix), Le Dahu (Argentière). For huts, the best by far was Cabane de Combal in Italy. The rest, you should skip if possible- Refuge du Bonhomme, Rifugio Elena, Refuge de La Flégère. The views around these last 3 huts are incredible but the conditions in the hut are less than comfortable- communal bathrooms, bunk beds, limited water, sleeping liners required, etc. We thought if we did it again, we’d avoid these dorm-style huts. We had one rest day in Courmayeur. We felt if we wanted another rest day, we might like one in Champex.

Marty, make sure to load the GPX files they provide, into your watch and a GPS app like Gaia GPS so you can see and confirm if you’re on the right track, along the way. There are lots of branching trails, and intersections in towns.
