This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 40th anniversary edition of the Toyota 4Runner SUV. This 2023 Toyota 4Runner is still a body-on-frame icon. Celebrating 40 years with the Toyota 4Runner, what a legend!
For decades, the 4Runner has earned the reputation of being an off-road icon, this vehicle is popular, people who own one, love it and this SUV offers great resale value. Even though it has an older powertrain and interior, it’s very reliable and comfortable.
Toyota has brought out the 40th Anniversary model to celebrate and it looks really cool. This heritage inspired edition comes in a variety of colours, our test model in Barcelona red has tri-colour striped graphics, 17” bronze wheels, 40th Anniversary badging to the exterior and interior, bronze accents and a Toyota heritage front grille with Toyota spelled out across the front in bronze. It’s priced at $58,265 CAD/$47,120 USD.
The 4Runner has a 4L V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. Part-time 4WD and full-time 4WD are available. In the US, there is also a rear-wheel-drive option.
The 4Runner offers plenty of standard features with a starting price of $54,935 CAD/$39,555 USD. They include a 4.2” gauge cluster, an 8” touchscreen, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker audio system, power and heated front seats,
SofTex upholstery, a heated steering wheel, moonroof and Toyota Safety Sense.
In the US, you don’t get as many standard features, the base trim is missing the moonroof, heated steering wheel, heated front seats and power front seats.
There are many different packages to choose from including, TRD Offroad, TRD Sport, TRD Pro, Limited which is a 7-passenger 4Runner and the 40th anniversary special addition. Available features depending on the trim you choose include, full time 4WD, fox shock absorbers, crawl control and multi terrain select, a multi-terrain view monitor, a kinetic dynamic suspension system, 20” wheels, a panoramic view monitor, ventilated front seats, driver seat memory, different badging, leather seats and a 15 speaker JBL audio system.
The 4Runner loves gas, it gets 14.9L/100 km, 16 MPG city and 12.6L/100 km, 19 MPG highway. It can tow 5,000 pounds and offers a ground clearance of up to 9.6”.

I've owned my $28K, 2008 4Runner for almost 15 years, and it is still my favorite vehicle It looks and drives like new with normal dealer servicing. Nothing has ever broken or been a problem. I always get 20 mpg in the city. Iowa winters are no problem. It was built in the Lexus factory in Japan.

I change cars every 3 to 4 years. This car I will keep for the rest of my life. It’s a 2021 4Runner TRD PRO. It has an available Super Charger but at $6k plus install to go from 278 hp to 350 I’m not going to do it. Gas Mileage sucks but I have a hybrid car I drive most of the time.

I’ve never been a truck guy, and bought my first 4Runner 6 months ago, a 2022 TRD Off Road. Have met lots of folks with 300K kms and more. Low to no issues on transmission or engine. Total cost of ownership is low once you get past 5 yrs of owning one, even with not so great L/100kms. I’m getting 15.5L/100kms, and only has 5,100 kms on it (some mods: A/T tires; ditch lights; 2” Eibach lift). Neighbour has a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, turbo 4cyl, great on gas but he has been without it twice now for at least a week due to warranty repairs.

The 4Runner transmission gets criticized because it’s only five speed. What’s the advantage of having more gears? Better fuel economy? My 2003 4Runner with a 4 speed gets the same mileage as my wife’s 8 speed Highlander. Having more gears I could care less.

Out of the dark ages, yes, but it is darn reliable and bulletproof. I would pay that for a new one, but as a pre-owned "go anywhere anytime" truck, this is it. Love the glass on the hatch, great for groceries and grab out of the glass portion as opposed to opening the hatch and having all your groceries roll out.

My wife had the choice between a Highlander, 4Runner. She picked the 4Runner and loves it. It is a 2019 so have had it 4 years in April and have exactly no issues with it surprise. It has held its resale value like crazy and will run forever. I would hate to pay to fix a five year old 10 speed transmission, hate to fix any one but those will probably cost more than the vehicle is worth, and they are actually starting to have issues with them now. This 4Runner will run forever and then some.

When people ask if they should buy this dinosaur: people buy this SPECIFICALLY because it IS a dinosaur. Every mechanical bit on on it from the engine to the transmission to the suspension has had every possible kink or bug worked out of it. It's very likely the single most reliable new car currently available for sale. A complete redesign might actually hurt sales rather than improve them.

My cousin bought a new second generation 4Runner with the V-6. He would load it up with his 2 kids and my wife & I would often tag along. (The kids were in the back without seat belts of course.) We went to the Calgary Stampede breakfast one weekend. When we loaded up to go back home, we were driving along and my cousin said, "What's that smell?" The discovery was that one of the young boys, about 4 years old had stepped in some fresh "doggy-doo" and it was on one shoe. WOW. He sure liked his 4Runner and he even pulled a holiday trailer with it. Toyota reliability is legendary for a reason.

I’m a fan of the 4Runner. Back when they were simple pop-off the top Toyota pickups (and cheaper) … I couldn’t afford one. Then in the late 90s I finally had some cash in my pockets, but I soon quickly found out that I still couldn’t afford one! Nowadays, base 4Runners actually seem like good value… but I can’t justify their crazy drinking (fuel) problem (and price TRD Pro!). I still like them though. What I don’t like is that pretentiously shallow (of any significance or originality)… “40 year anniversary” appearance sticker package. It literally does nothing to support the Toyota’s granite-like stance (tacky comes to mind). Why did you do that Toyota! Great product though and highly recommendable. It is too bad the Nissan Pathfinder (Chilkoot Trail) couldn’t/didn’t continue being it’s biggest competitor. Both of them, back in the day… owned this segment. So by default this Toyota ended up being the last man standing. And Toyota did not disappoint us. Thanks for the video.

Notice how everyone that does the review for these rarely know that this thing can be put in Smode to actually shift yourself for more speed. Shift down to get more speed to pass or merge. Of course the older automatics are slower. Why i love this underrated bad boy. Throttle sensitivity kit only makes it quicker too that most have no clue how big the aftermarket place is for this vehicle.

I honestly have a love/hate relationship with my 2015 4Runner. I hate it when I stop for gas and when I have to merg onto a highway.I love it when I think about how much it hasn’t cost me in repairs and when I want to go fishing in the out of the way areas(which is a lot) it gets me there easily. Whenever I think about replacing it with something newer that has more “features”…..I just can’t come up with anything that I think will be as reliable. And yes,people ask me if it’s for sale ALL the time. Weird.
@trailrunnah8886

Same! The only thing I dilike about my 2013 is the lack of power. It really is frustrating trying to get up to speed merging onto the highway, especially uphill. And then the resulting poor fuel economy is another disadvantage. I could deal with the economy if it drove better. Every once in a while I think about replacing it with something with more power, but I can't think of anything in my budget that has an 8 cylinder, comparable off-road capability, and the reliability. The only thing that would work is a GX460. I've actually started keeping my eye out for one of those.

@@trailrunnah8886put that bad boy in SMode that has the +and - because it lets you down shift for a reason to get more speed. Old automatics were always slower. Or you can get a throttle kit to have more power sensitivity. Take advantage of the aftermarket.

@trailrunnah8886 Жыл бұрын
@@Anomize23 Thanks. Yeah, I use the s mode a lot, when I know I'm about to hit a big hill that it's not going to want to climb, I just click it over so it locks out 5th gear. I also do have one of the throttle controllers, I said it in the automatic mode which is nice because the more aggressively I push the gas, the more aggressive the throttle response. It does make a difference. One thing I did lately, and I did not even realize this was possible, was turn off eco mode. I was trying to reset the service reminder light after doing an oil change, and apparently I did the wrong sequence, because I got a message saying "eco mode off". I've always been told that it's not an actual mode, it just tells you when you're driving efficiently. However, on my 2013, it really does feel better with it off. I also don't miss the green light on the dashboard. I also just filled it up today, my last tank of mostly highway driving I got 21.5 mpg over 400 miles between fill-ups. So even with it off, I can still get decent mileage.

We upgraded from our 98’ 4Runner to a 2016 limited so for us there’s so much more space and anything was an upgrade compared to the late 90’s model 😂. You’re definitely paying for the name more than anything. Not too many companies can produce the same vehicle for over a decade and only upgrade the radio basically. I drive a 2017 highlander, which drives a lot more like a car compared to the 4Runner. Both have been great.

GM had to recall every single Chevy Bolt made (144,000 units) and pay 1.8 Billion to fix every single battery pack. Is that what you call progress? I don't think so. The 4Runner is a gem.

Yeah for the anniversary they probably should have made an interior with a little more pizazz, maybe an 80s pattern on the seats at least. Some of those seats in Japanese Toyotas had some really interesting looking interior colours and patterns. The stripes just make me happy. ^_^ I think car makers should probably have more options for that stuff since it's just a sticker set. Bronze looking rims are really nice on the black one.

If you want a tough compact BOF truck that has Toyota's bulletproof reliability, there is nothing else like Tacoma and 4Runner. That explains their insane resale value, even before the microchip crisis. Those who have owned it really loves it. And there are good reasons why. There are also reasons why they won't need a redesign, yet. You can said the same things about the Hilux and Foretuner available on else around the world.

You're essentially right. For somebody to buy one of these and only drive it to go to work and back or pick the kids up at school, it's really a waste. There are much better vehicles for that job. Offroad is where it shines, while still being fairly civilized on road. If you only go off-road, a Jeep Wrangler is the better choice.

My brothers power hatch will open by itself while in an automatic car wash. Makes things interesting. I had a hard time choosing between the 4 runner and a Tacoma but chose the Taco.

I have the new Venza. I read the manual. It warns that the hatch can open in a car wash, or deep water. I went into the dashboard controls and turned the feature off. The problem feature is the one tied to the hatch opening when you waved your leg under the bumper. The electric opening still works but I have to manually press the button,

I drive a subcompact hatchback, and according to Edmunds, I have .3 inches more rear legroom. I can’t fit behind myself and Zack looks very comfortable in the back of this. So how is rear legroom measured? Still loving this channel and the 4Runner would be my choice if I need something this big.
@gs98999
@gs98999 Жыл бұрын
Something is very wrong with that number. Tacoma has a higher rear number but it’s way way tighter in the back than 4Runner. Not sure how it’s measured but it’s not representative.

love the 4runner I hope it would stay with body on frame suv forever, the 4L 1GR-FE is better than the 3.5L 2GR-FKS in the Taco cuz the 4L was designed to be a truck/suv engine from the start. I never get why toyota didn't just update for 4L and stick it in the Taco, the 3.5L 2GR-FKS is just not a truck engine doesn't matter how toyota tunes it, it just not.

I hate the 4,L in mine, I wish Toyota put the 4.6 from the Lexus GX460 in it as well. I much rather have an eight cylinder, this V6 doesn't make nearly enough torque and I find it frustrating to drive at times.

purchased a white 40th for MSRP=I love the old school dependable tech 100 percent made in Japan-its truly the last of the great reliable naturally aspirated V6s and the 5 speed trans is the most dependable ever made. The new models will be turbo hybrid 4 cylinders-because of the new EPA rules for auto makers-no thanks

You can make fun of the old powertrain, design, etc. but ask yourselves why they sell every one of them they make, why there are waiting lists for them and why people keep wanting/buying them... People are spoiled with car tech that can do everything and more than it took to put a man on the moon. My 4runner and 2nd Gen Tundra keep me grounded and un-wussified.

My wife, aged 76, is 4 ft 10 inches. Is the access too high? We have a 2021 Venza she loves. We had a 2017 Ford Fusion Platinum. I loved it but she found exiting it very painful. Her physical therapist recommended a crossover or van. We got the Venza. Perfect but boring.
