The 2023 Toyota 4runner is in its 14th year in its current iteration, yet it continues to sell better and better than when it was new and contemporary. The 4runner does have solid off-road chops, especially in TRD Pro trim, but what is it like to live with this SUV that in some respects is obsolete?

I ❤ my solar octane. No gimmicks. Gets to the point and will last forever. Just rust proof it. And old diehards love the old engine and transmission. Will never fail us.

There’s probably not a longer lasting drive train on the road than this dated 4 L with a five speed!

We just bought a 2023 TRD PRO. It is high tech for us. First car with a smart screen, cameras, radar, and satellite radio. Do miss not having a CD player.

I've had full time 4wd on all my vehicles including 2 Jeep Wranglers. I'm thinking of buying a 24 before the new design comes out. If I DONT get the Limited that has the full time 4wd, am I going to miss or regret not getting full time , or is the rear drive with 4L 4H going to be just as good?.

These 4runners are still awesome. They smoke Jeep in off road and reliability. Look great for 14 years!

You are incorrect, sir. It is not “unfortunate” the 4.0L hasn’t been updated. It is quite FORTUNATE for the smart people who would like a reliable vehicle.

It's a great engine for the cheap gasoline days, but for today's standard, it is definitely a 'financially unfortunate' engine. I know people who defend for these engines always pull out the 'reliability' and 'high resale value' but that's really about all they have for the extremely high upkeep cost for these vehicles. I'd love to keep one if I made $200,000 + a year in income.

@@Notification93 Again, you are projecting your feelings as if they are facts. 18mpg in a reliable vehicle is cheaper than 24mpg in an unreliable vehicle.

@@kerplunk38880 Exactly, that's why I'm purchasing this vehicle next year since my annual business income is projected to grow over $200k. However, as I stated, this is definitely a financially unfortunate engine.

@@Notification93 You are incorrect. Unless you are driving an excessive amount of miles the gas cost is negligible in comparison to any similar sized SUV. Your $200,000 business income is a good personal goal.

@@kerplunk38880 based on my budgeting sheet, 4runner is still a lot more expensive to own and upkeep compared to almost any other vehicle of this size. It's a financially-unfortunate vehicle for sure. Maybe your situation is different if you reside in the U.S. but in Canada, where I reside, especially on the west coast, the gas price is insane.

If you were picking a vehicle for the zombie apocalypse, this is what you'd be choosing. Not twin turbos, and certainly not electric. Will Toyota sell a "classic" model in pro or a rock climber edition without turbos in 2025, or will this be the end of tried and true? I expect the last years of this gen 5 to hold its value like no other vehicle.

Looking at getting a 2023 or 2024. I love them but will spring for a Magnuson Supercharger to get some respectable power. That's my only grip with them stock. If it's low MPG at least give me good acceleration and power.

IMO AWD is not necessary. Tires make a way bigger difference. AWD won't save you from a loss of traction. It helps you accelerate when wheels slip, but does nothing to help you slow down. AWD also comes with more stress and wear on the drivetrain , more weight, more complexity , and reduced gas mileage.

This thing is pretty expensive. In my area they are 10k over msrp which is crazy.

Get an off-road premium. Just as capable, no markup and lower MSRP.

This is a point that those who buy it will know it will last I would say if you compare to a 4 door wrangler both new I would like to see the cost of ownership just on matinece alone and see who is winning here As I bought for something to last for atleast 15 years

Two suggestions. If I took a drink every time you said, “That being said,” in this video I’d be drunk. Lastly, the TRD Pro has a TRD Pro exhaust installed by default. It is loud and obnoxious. Replace it with the standard 4Runner exhaust and it is extremely quiet. You should really learn more before you review these vehicles.

Wrong. Very reasonably priced compared to other SUV's. Not to mention, the maintenance on these is minimal whereas Ford and Jeep owners easily pay out $10-$15K in repairs during a 5 yr period.
