2023 Toyota GR Corolla Review / A Modern Day Evo XI

A few years ago, Toyota decided to re-enter the World Rally Championship and start winning titles again. A year later, they won the championship with the WRC Yaris. They made road versions of that car but we never got it here in North America. Instead, Toyota took the powertrain of that car, bumped up the power a bit and put it into the Corolla to make the GR Corolla. A rally car for the road, or a marketing tactic to generate more revenue for the company?
Like the GR Yaris, the GR Corolla 2023 is powered by a tiny 1.6L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. But despite its size, it produces 300 hp & 273 lb-ft of torque (224 kW & 370 Nm). The car is relatively light too, by modern day standards, with a curb weight of 1,480 kg (3,263 lbs). This weight & power allows it to accelerate from a stop to 100 km/h in around 5 seconds.
Whether you choose the Core, Circuit, or Morizo (if you’re lucky enough), the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission. This 6-speed feels “old school”. The shifter is a tad notchy when slotting it into the next gear but glides in afterwards. The clutch pedal provides a firm feel until the halfway point, then it goes light so that you know exactly where the bite point is.
Compared to the other GR vehicles in the Toyota lineup, the 2023 GR Corolla slots perfectly in between them. This Core trim starts at $45,490 CAD ($35,900 USD) for this 2023 model year. For 2024, it received a $1,000 price bump. The 2023 Corolla Circuit will cost you $53,990 CAD ($42,900 USD) with the 2024 GR Corolla Circuit being $2,600 more expensive. As for the Morizo, the only price I was able to find was $59,990 CAD ($49,900 USD) for the 2023 model year.

This channel should have 100k followers at least. Noticed a lot of shorts ranking for carolla gr searches on YT, maybe you have to do both now?

Thanks! Yea I've thought about doing shorts but it's more work and time is always the issue for me. This channel is just a hobby for me and I still have a regular 9-5 job and other things going on in my life at the moment. Perhaps one day I'll have more time to put into this channel but for now, it'll just be a new video every week and a written review on my website.

I bought my gr corolla 7 months ago after searching for a clean evo 8 or 9 for many many years with no luck. All of them clapped out 😢 Love love love my gr corolla so much but I still want w evo one day

Finding a stock or well taken care of Evo 8/9 will be difficult. But you never know, one might hit the market when you lest expect it. At least you have the GR Corolla to enjoy!

You pay for the transmission, drivetrain and the engine. So in my view it is DEAD CHEAP !!!!

Not if you include the dealership markups (10k). If you can find one for msrp or close to msrp, then it is an amazing deal, but good luck.

not when you pay for the Chassis, Engine, DriveTrain, BBS, Recaro, Momo on the Evo 9, that doesn't overheat its AWD.

Between my friends and myself im well familiar with STI, Evo X (and older) and Focus RS. This is a LOT better built and finished. All those cars had tons of issues, from engine issues in the STI, build issues ihe RS etc. Its like Toyota studied those cars and fixed all the issues. I do believe the Evos ability to vector torque side to side by overdriving the wheel (vs the Torsen) made it a bit more cool, but this AWD is very capable and more predictable. It will be on the roads driven daily much longer vs those cars as its a Toyota.

Only time will tell how durable this car is going to be with a 3 cylinder engine. I own a Mitsubishi Evo X and haven’t had any issues it’s reliable but if you plan to do mods to any car you have to expect breakdowns over time.

Most fun you can have on a twisty road?? Miata and 86 would disagree. I think this is amazing no doubt. Money no object the Evora /Emira are insane on a back road.

Would you say that this car is comparable to the Integra Type-S? Both have turbo engines with roughly same hp & 6-spds.

You can get this car for less money than the Acura and it has AWD which makes it easier to control in snow & ice. But i'm sure the Acura has a nicer interior. I'll find out for myself when I review the car in November.
