This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Toyota GR Corolla hot hatchback! This powerful hot hatch is an absolute blast to drive. It has a 1.6L turbo 3-cylinder with 300 horsepower, 273 lb-ft of torque and GR-Four AWD. The Toyota GR Corolla is designed to perform with the focus on lightweight aerodynamics to maximize the performance potential. It has a sport tuned suspension and is offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission with automatic rev matching to facilitate smooth shifts. Developed for rally, the GR-Four AWD system is adjustable to send 40%, 50% or 70% of the power to the rear wheels. It is also equipped with front and rear limited-slip differentials for enhanced cornering performance and better traction when taking those corners. There is just one trim available in Canada, three in the US but the extra trims in the US won’t last long. The Circuit Edition will only be available for 2023 and the GR Corolla MORIZO is a limited-edition model. This hatchback offers 5.3” of ground clearance, it has a black GR badged Matrix grille, a tapered roof giving it a sporty look and its wide low stance has quite the presence on the road. It comes standard with LED headlamps, 18” black wheels, a tire repair kit and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The race-inspired interior has manual cloth sport seats, an 8” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and a 12.3” multi-information display. In the US, the Circuit Edition adds suede upholstery and an 8-speaker JBL audio system.
For fuel economy, the GR Corolla gets 11.1L/100 km, 21 MPG city and 8.3L/100 km, 28 MPG highway.
In Canada, all pricing now includes, freight and delivery, dealer fees and levies, minus taxes. The Core model starts at $48,599.70 CAD
In the US, it’s still MSRP, Core $35,900 USD, Circuit Edition $42,900 USD, Morizo Edition $49,900 USD.

For Toyota fans the GR Corolla is an outstanding limited production car that is 100% Toyota. It is the high-performance Corolla we really WANT🤩Too bad Toyota's loyal and practical Canadian customers can't get the mainstream, 3.7 litre per 100 km Corolla Hybrid Wagon that we really NEED. 🤨

Point is the GR is a more hardcore performance car than the R, stiffer chassis and suspension, better brake pedal feel and brake performance, more steering feedback and that crisp shifter feel just brings all the other senses of feedback all together. Golf R, a better daily commuter though.

Knowing the performance is equivalent to the Golf R. I would take the Toyota because it would have a better resale value and reliability. Yes I know it's a 3-cylinder turbo and it might be high-strung flooring it all the time but once again it is a Toyota and they know how to build reliable engines. And yes I love barebone rather than all these quirky electronics in a German car. Overall great review

Between Toyota purposely limiting production and dealerships marking up these things to the Moon, I can't help but notice that the hype and fanfare has fallen off a cliff. People are starting to see this car as something unobtainable, like a Ferrari or Lamborghini. It's only for the rich and well connected.

It's a one off rally bred limited production hot hatch, with a trick all wheel drivetrain, what did you expect it would cost $30,000? The MSRP pricing is fair for this car, it's when dealerships add on ridiculous adm's that the price gets silly. I'm fortunate that my dealer in Canada 🇨🇦 is selling me the car at MSRP and not a penny more. The funny thing is we don't have pennies here anymore 😉. However they are charging me $399.00 for a document fee, which to me is a scam and rip off, but far better than a $2,000-$15,000 adm that you gents in the good old USA get charged.

@@dougmaverick3287 The only new rally bred car we have from Toyota is the Yaris GR-Four, it's the The only one that was designed and engineer from the ground up to be a rally car, not the Corolla GR. What I was talking about as it relates to pricing was the ridiculous markups dealerships are putting onto the cars not the original MSRP, The original price for the car is very reasonable for the amount of vehicle you're getting.

I'm so envious that you guys got to drive this car! I'm a longtime manual enthusiast and I just finally gave up my 2010 Matrix for a Rav4 Hybrid. I considered a Corolla hatchback in manual, but it was too small for my needs, I really could not go smaller than the Matrix. I was very surprised when my dealer got a GR Corolla (they said they didn't know if they could get one), but the owner of the dealership immediately put his plate on it, and it wasn't available for test drives at all. I also heard that the car would be sold at $10,000 OR MORE above MSRP, so it was not in the cards for me. I do love driving a fun little manual hatchback and boy I bet this one is fun. Regarding Android Auto, I have noticed that sometimes if I do a short trip, my phone does not automatically reconnect to the car if I start it back up shortly after shutting it off. Then I can manually reconnect it, but sometimes the audio comes out of the phone speakers instead of the car's! That is irritating but it doesn't happen every time. I wonder if they will fix it with some sort of update.

In your reviews when you get to the backseat area I'd like to know if there is connectivity and if there are HVAC outlets, also do the rear windows roll all the way down. Back seat comfort would also be good to know as some vehicles do nor have sufficient thigh support in the rear or the seat backs are too upright

Damn, $60,000 for a GR Corolla Circuit edition in Canada. That car is only $44000 in America. Man I’m proud to be an American 😂😂. All joking aside, I did try to put a deposit down on a Circuit edition, but these cars are basically un-obtainium. I wouldn’t fault anyone for getting the Golf R over this, but like Zach said, if you buy the GR Corolla you essentially get to drive the car for free because should you ever choose to sell it, you WILL be getting ALL your money back.

I was told way back in April of 2022 that I was third on the list so I guess the first two gentlemen on the list opted to wait for the circuit Edition. To me the circuit Edition is not worth $9,000 when the core and the circuit Edition have the same exact performance. I'm paying MSRP $48,000 including freight, pdi, document fees plus sales tax. I would never pay a single penny in dealer markups. I read some clown 🤡 in the states paid $13,000 adm. You know what the old saying is some people have more money than brains.

Zack, my Toyota dealer let me know my GR Corolla will be arriving the first week in April. My concern is the ride quality. I recently sold my Veloster N which had a fairy stiff ride, but not punishing. My Focus RS ride was unbearably stiff and punishing, so I sold it after only 8 months of ownership. How does the ride quality of the GR Corolla compare to cars like the Veloster N, Golf R and Ford Focus RS?

Guys can you give us cargo space in litres ? It's much more tangible to me, i.e. I can see that many 1 litre bottles and it's a bit more exact. Nice review, my vote is still with the Golf R especially at that price. The R feels amazing, even with stupid haptic feedback systems - quite right that it's an Audi with the VW badge on it, and my choice every time. I don't buy the 'Future collectible' argument, just get a 1980s Porsche if you really want that.

~20 years ago I wanted a new STI. It was right around $50k in Canada. Focus RS was $60k 6 years ago. So this car to be priced at 45.5k msrp is fair. This thing isn’t expensive at MSRP. Just have to be patient and wait.

@@janoycresnova9156 I just replied to you with links, but now I can’t see it. Maybe links aren’t allowed 2004 STI MSRP was $46,995 plus freight and pdi, which is more than GR Corolla today 2018 Focus RS was $59,000 plus Freight and PDI. Easy to double check if you wish. Again this is Canadian prices, but I’m sure if you’re from USA you can check go see what 2004 STi cost then vs GR Corolla today.

As an enthusiast package, the GRC is the winner in my opinion over the Golf R. I can't stand VW's infotainment and capacitive controls, so that's a non-starter. The Golf's manual transmission also feels a bit flimsy and disconnected so that's another issue I have with it. The Toyota is the far more special car with its old-school vibe, plus it should be much more reliable too. The dull interior is a sore point but who knows, maybe they're listening and will spruce it up for next model year. The main problem is dealer markup if you live in the U.S. A fully loaded Core with some accessories comes out to around $40k which is a good price in my opinion. It's certainly not worth a heavy markup, though.

Toyota's manufacturing process seem very adaptable. One minute they're making specialized limited production race car and the next, it could be mechanized killing machines (LOL). Anyways, very adaptive system which makes more sense when long term survivability is preferred over quick profits.

In Vancouver, I would be happy with this as my daily driver, I didn't find the suspension to be too stiff. I did find the BRZ to have quite a stiff suspension, I wouldn't want to drive that every day myself. I have been on Quebec roads and you are right, the roads are not great and that might make a difference for you.

Enjoyed this review! This is a hard one to buy since it is so limited. A friend managed to "win" a lottery at a Vancouver dealer buy a GR Corolla at MSRP. He is a former FK8 Civic Type R owner and sold high. He prefers the Civic Type R to the GR in every way. He's waiting on the FL5 Civic Type R. I applied for the Morizo Edition. It's like applying for the Ford GT.

We're all being duped by all the car companies with these prices and limited editions especially. There is no doubt this car is cool, but not at the prices at sticker then add dealer markup, it's a joke. The materials are cheap and let's all remember it's a Corolla. If you want to spend this much on a Corolla and you're fine with it, have fun.

The economy will slowdown and with interest rates high they won't be selling these cars like before.Don't forget that wealthy people don't buy Toyota or VW products and the average buyer of these cars are middle class who are getting hit hard by rising interest rates on their mortgages.

Besides the very bad interior of the MK8 Golf R, the R is faster, has a bigger engine, gets better mpg’s, is more practical, doesn’t feel like you’re stepping inside a base model $20k car, and lastly, is a lot cheaper. Golf R ftw
