While not all are happy, the V6 Highlander is dead, but 2023 saw other changes as well to the segment's sales king. As a result, I think this deserves its place as the sales king of the segment, but with various all-new and refreshed competitors like the Subaru Ascent, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, its place at the top is far from secure.

I have the 2022 V6 Highlander XLE and tested the 2023 turbo 2.4L turbo. Both great but the V6 is more refined and quiet while the 2.4 Turbo 2023 model is better at the lower speeds.

I bought a 2023 Platinum Edition with the turbo 4 cylinder in December 2022. Had to wait on a list for 4 months. I was hoping I would like the car when it came in. It came with only one key with a promise for the other key in a couple months. That never came as we never received the other key. The computer system screen was the most unfriendly system l have ever seen and no one could help us. They kept saying it was too new of a system. The engine noise was horrible and the mileage wasn’t very good. Finally we decided to trade it in at a $3k loss and bought a new Acura MDX. It’s everything the Highlander isn’t. My wife is super happy now! I’ve owned probably 10 Toyotas through the years and loved them! I don’t know what happened……..

The older Highlanders with the V6 could pull 300k + miles if you took care of it with little more than basic maintenance. Good thing Honda is keeping the V6 in their SUV’s. I just wish they used a timing chain instead of a timing belt, but otherwise I think the V6’s are better suited.

Until you show me that the new 4 cylinders cannot reach 300k miles with proper care, your assumptions are based on old norms.

The V6 was very smooth and quiet. I just can’t stand the noisy cabin from this horrible sounding turbo 4 banger. Glad we got a 2019 V6 model. I recommend the Pilot to anyone wanting a new mid size SUV.

This turbo 4 reminds me a whole lot of the Mazda 2.5T, wonder if Toyota's shares in Mazda paid dividends in that

Helpful in specific scenarios but it usually just damages paint and I personally prefer a ppf of sorts. I guess if it comes off immediately after a roadtrip then it is less of a bad idea

To be 100% with you, I test drove both a platinum and a calligraphy on the same day. I would say, if you want just a bit more “luxury” I’d go with calligraphy, the highlander was very much impressive (has the same interior as the Lexus) I ended up going with the highlander and I have no regrets at all. I was almost sold on the calligraphy until I test drove both.

A fully loaded 2023 Subaru Ascent costs the same price as this XLE.... Which one would you get?
@vstan9023
@vstan9023 Жыл бұрын
Ascent for sure
@slandshark
@slandshark Жыл бұрын
@blitz Subaru's CVT is not a bad transmission. The Ascent is overbuilt, super strong chain drive CVT, cooling systems for both AWD and transmission. The CVT is not a failure point and it has plenty of power. There's a video of someone doing a 0 to 60mph in 6.1 seconds in the Ascent. People who tow with it have no issues at all.
@Realistick
@Realistick Жыл бұрын
They’re both great so that answer comes down to personal preference. I trust Toyota a little bit more (even though the ascent has worked out most of its kinks), so I would personally go with the highlander unless you want a little more space or a better awd system. Price wise, a fully loaded 23 ascent is still $50k after the usual accessories!

@Realistick
@Realistick Жыл бұрын
This should be a good one but I the 2.4 engine is new so it is open to new issues. The mazda cx-9 is solid, the Honda pilot has a very proven engine but I haven’t done a full review on one yet (and the new model also has to prove itself too). Hyundai and Kia have had questionable reliability for awhile now but I haven’t heard too many bad things about the 3.8. Check out forums, carcomplaints.com (and the nhsta reports within the individual reports) and cars.com reviews too.

@Realistick
@Realistick Жыл бұрын
You can get it in red if you’d like and I’d advise doing research on your claim there. A well built turbocharged engine can be very dependable with regular maintenance.
@panzer_TZ
@panzer_TZ Жыл бұрын
The "car care nut" recently did a full engine swap on a naturally aspirated 2.5L in a Camry because the owner changed the oil at 10,000 mile intervals instead of shorter 5,000 mile intervals. It's all about maintenance. These are factory built turbo engines. This isn't remotely the same as slapping some crappy aftermarket turbo to your tuner car then wondering it failed.
@Doc1855
@Doc1855 Жыл бұрын
@@panzer_TZ I’m totally aware that it’s a factory turbo. I’ve owned 2 turbo’s and the life span of the engine wasn’t nearly as long as naturally aspirated engine’s. I change the oil every 4K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic and change the front and rear differential, transfer case and flush the transmission every 30K miles. I also change all the belts and hoses with a radiator flush every 50K miles. Whenever a family member or a friend knows I’m going to sell one of my vehicles, they’re always willing to buy it off me bc they know I’m a very particular maintenance freak.

Hello Realistic, I've been hearing that the 2023 Hybrid is noisy (like it is whining) at higher speeds and the gas engine kicking in and out when it does is awkward. Have you had a chance to drive the hybrid and your thoughts? I'm torn between the 2023 Pilot and the 2023 hybrid Highlander. I loathe noise and need a quiet cabin experience so quieter/more gas vs noisier/much better on gas is my conundrum.
@Realistick
@Realistick Жыл бұрын
I drove a hybrid in 2020 and don't remember hearing that. The only time it sounds funny is at parking lot speeds as it will run full electric only at low speeds and plays a noise so that pedestrians hear you. I had a pretty good experience with this one once cruising but the engines do sound like cheap 4 cylinders when under medium to hard acceleration. I'll try to review another hybrid when I can!
@mike6636
@mike6636 Жыл бұрын
If you are going to drive in city, buy hybrid. If you will have more highway driving, buy pilot. There is not a big difference in highway economy. Sienna gets 28-30 on highway with speeds between 70 to 75 mph. You will hate noise of small engine at highway speed. I wouldn't buy sienna/ highlander without test driving on highway and specially uphill. Odyssey gives pretty much same mileage as sienna hybrid on highway.

This Will be Toyota’s Achilles’ heel! Why? Because in 2023. They joined the 2.0Turbo. Engines. That in time Will Kill the reliability mileage. That Toyota’s been known for for years. I have had 2 Audi’s both with a 2.0Turbo. These Turbos excite the engine and Trans so much. That after a certain amount of miles. The engine or the Transmission Are “Destroyed”. And why? Because the cause Massive Heat and Way Over Worked Parts that eventually FAIL! We’re talking around 80 to 100k miles. That’s why people that can afford to dump them around 80k miles do just that. Then along comes a buyer. Who doesn’t know about these engines. Buys it and soon. Have to pay a hefty high price to fix it! Stay Away from All Turbo or Super Chargers. They both do the same thing after time. And it’s a short time!

You’re acting like Toyota personally pissed in your breakfast 😂 Let them prove themselves before you slam it, there are many reliable turbo charged engines, they just require a stronger build and a smart design.

Thank you for your knowledgeable input. I heard Scotty Kilmer on KZfaq say the same thing. He's an expert. He doesn't like the turbo.
