The problem with this sort of trend mentality is that they don't often fit the structure or architecture or even the person's personality. Interiors are made to be a cocoon, a sanctuary for the family or persons who inhabit them, not a social statement or status. So if you're moody and love detail, go for the elaborate trim and dusky colors or if you're a bright, sunny sort of sprite and like a lot of simplicity and order, surround yourselves with white and light woods.

I just buy what I personally like and it seems to come together in a mish mash, following trends is a fools game really unless you have loads of money. Im glad the white is over though, if i see another white house that feels like a doctors surgery pretty sure ill just scream lol.

I prefer a simple calming vibe, so not so big on all the wall detail, but I love that the warmer colors are coming back. Our home is in warm beiges and mixed browns, lots of texture, which feels very cozy. I’ve never liked the bright whites (too harsh) or the greys which just look like winter skies to me. We live on a river so the views are priority and our main focal points, and our light, but warm interiors just feel right here. Thanks for a very enlightening video.

Wow good to hear this, because I never follow trends. I follow what I love to put in my home. I do not care for modern contemporary decor.. I like to fill my home with a bit of early American meets English cottage, and a bit of Country French. Which in turn, becomes me, warm and cozy and inviting. I never over do with one style or the other, with my eye, and sense of style it just knows how to fit in with each other beautifully...I also love looking for unique pieces that catch my eye and speaks to me..I then have to have it in my home because it's not the trend of the day. And no one else has it, because they weren't looking for it, but I me. I enjoy your channel, you have great style in decorating some beautiful homes. I'm glad I saw your video, it just validates what I have been doing all my life.

Hi Miriam, I am one of your early subscribers. Thank you for your wonderful range of design topics. Your videos are always clear and crisp, warm and relatable. I live in a classic 1870s NY brownstone and have seen some of the interiors of these old gems (ok, many are potential gems) stripped of every architectural detail in their interiors; the exteriors spared generally when the building is in an historic or landmarked district. Fortunately, many of the original mouldings in our house survived, others not. I am so glad this house had not been stripped bare back in the 1980s when we bought it. I am looking forward to your video on trim! And for the record, I am not a maximalist, but know I have too much stuff! Haha.

This is what I like about "trends" -- if there is a style or a combination of them that I love and they come on trend that means there is plenty out there to choose from! Same with clothing. If grey comes into fashion I will buy a lot of clothing while I can get gray. All the trends described here are very "classic" whether they are traditional or contemporary in twist. I love the images you use, Ms. Manzo and your content is intelligent and to the point. Just found you -- delighted!

Love! Love your videos so interesting and informative. So many great trends coming back. Interior trends as in fashion just go round and round but with a different twist on them each time. I like to decorate more in a timeless way which many of these New trends as you call them as timeless. I don't like the dark rooms unless they are small like the bachelor powder room you did. Fabulous wallpaper. Love wallpaper!

Another amazing video! Thank you. Since Miriam asked . . .my favorite is wallpaper. Glad to see it’s back in favor. Perhaps because there are new and easier products for the DIY market. Of course, the real key to a beautifully wallpapered room is prep! I’ve heard too many folks say they didn’t like wallpaper because it was difficult to remove - so true when the surface wasn’t prepped. As far as my least favorite, it’s the dark room trend (as popularized by the Netflix series, Wednesday). It’s great in other people’s homes, but I live in Florida now, and it doesn’t work very well here with a few exceptions like powder rooms.

First off, your sequined pants are gorgeous!!!! I watch a lot of 'trend' posts at the beginning of every year and usually have a good laugh and also have to cringe when they actually are insulting to younger people who are just trying their best. Your post was spot on (in my opinion), especially when you mention why people are warming up their homes. I live in a 1902 Victorian that I have managed to respect the original aesthetic yet keep it relevant and fun. On another note, I really like the fluted woodwork but worry the fluted glass could be easily dated even though I like it as well. We are having our kitchen renovated in about a month and now I am toying with some fluted glass cabinets. I guess it would be an easy swap out if I tired of it. Thank you for yet another lovely video.

We have lived in our 1916 two story home for 39 years. I think I have been through it all in this house. I'm 66 now and when we moved in with our 3 little daughters the house was very old fashioned, layers and layers of wallpaper that I had to spend what seemed like forever to scrape off. I will never follow that trend again! I used to like dark colors, but now they seem depressing. The darkest color in my house is a very pretty green in my bedroom that I never tire of. The rest of the house is more in neural tones and white with a lot of the natural woodwork. As far as decorating, I would say I'm mostly tradition with a couple treasured antique pieces that were passed down to me. Thank you for your content. I really enjoyed it.

Although I can appreciate the trend for dark spaces, it doesn't seem appropriate for Southern Florida where I live. At least not in my contemporary home with huge sliders overlooking palm trees. But, we did have grasscloth wall paper installed in our den last year as a change from all the other white walls. It cozies up the space without darkening it much and the color makes the trim on the arched windows in the room pop. My husband creates very large, very bright paintings, so, our walls really need to be white in most of the rooms. I enjoy all your videos.

Hi Miriam! I just recently discovered your videos and appreciate all the effort you put in, and the attention to detail, to your work, projects and these videos. I had a thought on a future video for you. So, I have a basic Cape Cod ( Chicago Area "chicago brick" home) with a dormer on second floor but only in the back. I have done a lot to "maximize" my space, as there was virtually no storage, the house was built in 1949 and I am certain ( though cannot locate any builders plans) that it was purchased as a bare bones, post world war two housing, with the second floor bedroom I am in, probably initially being an unfinished room or even an attic space. Some walls are plaster, some are drywall. the central heating and air, is there, but not the best configurations and there's no "returns" in the upstairs rooms. Unlike many of my neighbors, I did not "pop the top" when I bought 18 years ago, so I have 7 foot ceilings. For Real Estate Tax purposes my tax bill is half of my neighbors as a result. Here's my thought, can you address some design ideas for houses with "smaller rooms" that still look elegant. I notice in many of the stills yu have on your videos, they are larger scale rooms. After my divorce, I moved here, so I had "large scale furniture" but over the years had to be creative as to placement. It helped my budget not to purchase new furniture, but again, what did not fit, I donated to Habitat for Humanity. Thanks for everything you do, which is much more than Interior Design! Great Video!
