Every time I look at that Elmira my stress goes down. Looks very classy. Was searching KZfaq if Liberty Rocket stoves can burn regular wood. Good to know I would have to basically cut my wood to kindling. Ran into your video and "Oh I remember her. She is a attractive one with good content."

Are you still living with no electricity? Only solar? Very inspiring channel. This has been my first month with no electricity. Here in Norway the gouverment ruins more and more nature and displaces the animal who lives there. They claim that we need more electricity. But the truth is they´re going to export it to other countries. I no longer want to be part of it, so this is my quiet little protest. Trying to be the change I want in the world. This means I can no longer have running water in the house, because if I´m away, in the winter-time, the plumming will freeze and break. Luckily I have a stream not far from my house where I can collect water. 😊 Glad I found your channel. Greetings from Norway. ❤

Excellent video. Everyone here tells me about pellet stoves and how great they are. I have found several disadvantages. Electricity as you mentioned, and availability and storage of pellets. Once winter rolls in, every retailer is out of stock on pellets. Most modest homes will consume at least two pallets during an average winter. That's a lot of garage space to give up. I went with a coal stove as my off grid backup. It's hand fired, no electricity. Coal is readily available, and cheap, because not many people use it anymore. I am close to coal country where its mined. I can put cord wood in it if necessary.

what a purdy little stove. I remember looking at old style stoves with the water tank on back as well. Love old and new wood and coal stoves.

Loved the stove reviews! My best suggestion to add to anyone concerned with heating / cooling costs is to insulate, insulate, insulate. Find the weakness and fix that asap. Maybe even new windows?Unfortunately this is not cheap. If you live in an unfriendly environment, build smaller than you actually want, be strategic with windows/ shade. Energy prices are escalating you will have to take charge of your lifestyle choices, more now than ever. We have wood heat, i joke that it makes you feel rich and poor at the same time. Poor because it involves hard messy work but rich b/c you can create the temperature that is comfortable without worrying about the cost if you have the wood source.)

I think I've had my wood stove from Menards for over 10 years and it's going strong. Just looks like a box with a glass door. Cost me 600 dollars. I can cook on the top in an emergency, but I've never used it for that because I have a small house and it generally doesn't need to burn that hot. Your temps are nearly as cold as mine in northern Wisconsin, apparently. If you are prepared for it, it's not too bad.

A good solution for running a pellet stove's fans more efficiently, would be running a generatir to charge one of those lithium 110 power banks. Would likely run the fans for 24 hours on an hour or few, of running a 2kw generator.

I don't think of normal pellet stoves as a good survival solution, but instead as an easy comfort heat solution in 'normal times'. For severe winter weather a stove that heats DIRECTLY from wood burning without any electrical components is crucial.

You can use a battery backup portable solar generator you have to light it with a blowtorch and disconnect the heating element to get it started but it'll run for days just powering the blower motor and exhaust fan if you have a smaller portable solar generator The heating element pulls too much for the smaller units have been using mine for the last 10 years this way they also make a gel if you don't have a blowtorch or you can mix rubbing a call and Vaseline to spread on the pellets to get them started this is also handy if you are igniter goes out you can start your pellet stove with out having the igniter

What is the burn time like in the Elmira? We have a Obadiah 2000 it is massive and if loaded with birch and turned down for the night I can get about 10 hourrs. Thinking of one of the Elmira's for our rental cabin.

I live in the city and I’m probably never going to get a wood burning stove. It’s still interesting to learn about how to make the most of the wood you have. It’s really ingenious to be able to make a homemade rocket stove that burns clean with no creosote making it with aircreate was truly amazing and the liner must be made with some type of refractory cement that creates a thermal barrier to prevent the aircreate from disintegration from the high temperature. You said you were pleased with the performance of the stove but you didn’t mention anything about how much wood you needed to keep the house warm. You were able to demonstrate that with the liberator stove and you didn’t mention anything about wood consumption for your Elmira kitchen stove. Does the honey do rocket stove offer advantage over the Elmira stove? Other than that there’s no problem with creosote with the rocket stove since all the gases are being burned.

❤ Could u elaborate on making ur storage water taste better? I used mine for boiling broth, tea and coffee. I washed the 5 gallon water bottles, rinsed w near boiling water, swished with a tiny bit of bleach water, rinsed thoroughly again w a bit of vinegar, and refilled with RO water. The water tastes " stale". Was not suitable for drinking as is, but not necessarily bad.😊

We have a Quattro FP insert on main level. How much wood does the Liberator use versus our FP insert? Is there a substantial reduction? I'm worried we would run out of wood pretty quickly if we had to use our FP insert all day in grid down...we have several goats so are feeding them willow branches and could use those possibly.

I saw a video from 6 years ago about wool insulation. Can you give an update about it? Did you have a roddent problem with the wool? Or did you use something to treath it before using it?
@dirtpatcheaven
@dirtpatcheaven 6 ай бұрын
We haven't had a problem with rodents. Earwigs were a problem because of the raw wood we used on the inside but it wasn't from the wool. I haven't opened the wall up to see how it did but maybe I should?

@@dirtpatcheaven i intend to do a wool insulation in my addic. But roddents and insects love wool. I was thinking in using some aluminium foil to wrap the wool to avoid exposure. I hope roddents do not get to it.

Personally I see the convivence of a pellet stove but have never like them for myself - I just checked home depot and they re charging $7.58 CDN for a 40lb bag here in BC - If 3 bags a day was needed here, essentially $24 CDN a day - I do recall a work mate several years ago that had one and he loved it - enjoyed not have to bother with chopping cord wood - Also Home Depot limits you to 250 bags - If one is unable to fine and chop their own wood here, depending on who you are purchasing from a full cord of wood (hard or soft) is now $400 delivered

Using that liberator without sending the exhaust through a thermal mass, is losing a lot of the heat it is generating, and operating it as a normal wood stove, rather than a mass heater.
@dirtpatcheaven
@dirtpatcheaven 8 ай бұрын
The liberator doesn't pull as hard as the Honey Do Carpenter stove, because of this it doesn't get as hot. The exhaust will go through a bench with Darwin's stove but not the Liberator.
@orcoastgreenman
@orcoastgreenman 8 ай бұрын
@@dirtpatcheaven - uncle mud has one running through a bench (a bell works even better than a ducted mass...) so it may just be that the design of the bench needs some adjustments to work that way. The liberator was certainly designed to be able to. Often it is just a matter of having a bypas to get the stove and chimney up to temp, and then pulling exhaust through a bench is no issue.
@jakebredthauer5100
@jakebredthauer5100 8 ай бұрын
@@orcoastgreenman You are right about the bell. There is no need for ducts in a bench. "Walker Stoves". Her thinking is correct about steel not being able to stand high temperatures but Portland cement products cannot stand high temperatures either. Brick masonry is okay and especially the white high temperature bricks. Ceramic fiberboard is good.

If I remember correctly Uncle Mud set up a couple of mass heater systems that were in trailer and tiny homes. I can't remember if the Liberator was set up on that sort of "lighter weight" mass system though.
