New for 2023, the Yeti Cycles SB family - the 120, 140, and 160 - have been given a host of new tech and features to reinvigorate the SB lineup as one worth considering when the time comes to make that next bike purchase. “Much of what you’ll see when you look at the bike is the same, and that was very intentional,” Peter Zawistowski, Yeti’s director of engineering told us. Zawistowski continues, “the new SB is about refinement, improving ride experience and durability of the complete system.” If the devil is in the details, then Beelzebub just got three new buddies, because the new Yeti SB120, SB140 and SB160 bikes will have you pulling out a magnifying glass to examine all the subtleties found within. Let us dive into those in this installment of our Dissected series.
As with all of our Dissected Features, this is not intended to be a long term review or endorsement of a product but is instead a chance for our viewers and readers to get a deep dive look into some of the newest tech and products in the mountain bike space. We thank Yeti for the opportunity to create this feature and getting you some valuable beta on these new offerings.

THE WOLF’S FIRST IMPRESSION
As with all our Dissected Features, our first ride review is not our official long-term opinion, but instead our first impressions after spending several days riding and filming the bikes for this launch-focused feature. Across the board all four testers were very impressed with the Yeti bikes thus far. It did take some of the bikes a bit longer to get dialed in, as we found the suspension really likes to be in a tight range for setup. For example, the SB160 calls for 19.5mm of sag and being just a little too under sprung resulted in a stiff and harsher ride. By increasing compression a few clicks and resetting our air pressure to hit about 19 - 19.5mm of sag, the bike instantly felt better - smoother and more composed. It’s still not a Cadillac, but we reckon Yeti riders are already aware of how these bikes ride. They ride more like race machines than plow-horses.
Speaking of racing, each of these bikes love to go fast. All of our riders commented on how silent and scary fast the bikes are, both pedaling and when pointed downhill. The bikes accelerate effortlessly and carry momentum well over a wide range of terrain. That comes without isolating the bike to a race-only scenario, and while they all certainly feel like they’d hold their own between the tape, they’ve also been a pleasure to ride in a more casual setting. The stack height certainly feels towards the race-focused low front end, which we’re typically not such a fan of, so we’ll be looking to add a higher rise bar in the future to bring things up to a more comfortable height.
The somewhat unique suspension feel of the Switch Infinity platform on the 2023 Yeti SB bikes is a talking point. It feels to be somewhere between a DW-Link and well-tuned VPP in terms of platform, pedaling efficiency and compliance. It’s unique and so far, we like it in most conditions. As we mentioned though, there does seem to be a relatively narrow window of tuning where it feels the best. We’ll be interested to experiment some more with the setup to figure out if this is definitely the case and if there’s more performance there to unlock.
Our crew is excited to put more miles on the bikes during this winter. We’ve always been skeptical of the Switch Infinity system from a durability standpoint and it seems like this winter will give us all the crappy conditions we’ll need to find out how it holds up. So far we’ve been very pleased with all of the bikes, and with a bit more time to tweak and tune the cockpit and suspension set up, we’re sure that we won’t be struggling to find reasons to take these bikes out for test rides any chance we get. It seems Yeti has succeeded after our initial rides and we look forward to updating you in a couple of months.

Beautiful bikes. But dang those prices are insane, even in today's market. $5000 for the SB160 frame...really? For nearly the same price as just a Yeti frame you can get a complete carbon fiber long travel bike with full XT and XM1700 wheels and Fox Performance Elite from multiple other brands. I get it how a brand can command a small premium but.......

Copped myself a 2022 Canyon Spectral CF9 a year ago for $8.3k AUD new, around $5.6k USD. Full carbon including Cockpit and wheels, sram wireless shifting and Ultimate level Rockshox suspension. Bike has been flawless, and seeing these prices reaffirms my choice. I mean, my bike isnt cheap, far from it. But this is CRAZY.

Very true about expensive bikes and the expectation that people will have a more enjoyable ride than something a few years older or half the price. I have a Yeti with carbon wheels. I got the bike with those wheels on it. Can't say I enjoy the ride more than with the lower priced bike I used to ride with aluminum wheels. Different ride but that doesn't necessarily make it better. People and mountain bikers in general have been accustomed to the consumer driven way of purchasing. More expensive isn't objectively always better nor vastly improved to be that noticeable. Most of the time it's just different. Many times you can't even tell a marked difference that a company claims there is on a product.

And what are the better 'options' in the market? I've owned a Pivot Trail 429, Ibis, Trek Fuel 9.8, etc....and the Yeti SB115 (last year) is by far the best climber and overall bike IMO. Yeti's are great bikes.
@acornhehe

@@MXJEFF94 I agree, as I stated, they are super nice bikes, but I cannot justify the price tag. People's opinions on bikes are inherently subjective, this is just my opinion. I too have owned Ibis, Rocky Mountain, Specialized, Pivot, Yeti, Santa Cruz, and a few others, so I have a pretty decent idea of what I like. So much depends on the terrain people ride most of the time. I'm in the desert Southwest where we have a ton of rocks. We definitely have to climb some tech if we want to enjoy the descents. Of all the bikes I've owned, I would say the Ripmo is the most well rounded of the bunch. Again, great bikes, but when the cheapest option for a SB140 is $6400, I'd rather look elsewhere. But that's just me. Your mileage may vary. Enjoy the trails!

I bought a sb130 lr in matte black discounted in April. I found the pricing to be inline with most brands. It does not stand out in a pack of bikes cosmetically. Looks pretty utilitarian. What I like about it most is it rides anything and very well. I live in FL and travel to basically anywhere near the Appalachians in the south east. Like Pisgah, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. It’s nice having 1 bike that can ride places in FL such as Alafia, Santos, etc and then I can take it to the mountains. I love it. I’m doing things I didn’t think I could ever do on a bike like jumps, drops, tech, fast trails, etc and all while living in an place with no mountains. Call me a dentist, I don’t care. I’m just grateful to have the opportunity own this bike and to do this sport.

I feel sad when I see the way prices are heading, because at the end of the day this is a bicycle. Personally I purchased a Pivot Switchblade last year, and that was way more expensive than I ever thought I would be willing to pay for a bicycle, but because I had just sold my last home and had some extra money from that, I was able to do it. The thing is that I won't be selling a home every other year, and I got other expenses in my life as everybody else. That Switchblade will be coming along for quite some years to come so I get my money's worth for that thing. The other thing is prices for parts as well that has just skyrocketed. When I see prices for something as simple as a cassette that now can cost an arm and a leg, I feel bitter sweet about the whole thing really. Something has to change for prices to stabilize so it will benefit both consumer and the industry as a whole.

I have an sb130LR - and I don't understand why I need to buy a new sb140... The changes are minimal. I do not feel that my sb130 sounds loud when I ride, I don't have any issues with my pf bb and I do not see any significant improvement in geometry. I also have checked the specs of t3 and t4, and what we've got for extra 1.5k$ - kashima coating on dropper post, x01 chain instead gx (lol), ergon saddle instead wtb, xx1 cassette instead x01, xx1 cranks instead x1 and guide rsc instead ultimate. I'm not sure but for 1.5k it's too few changes. They may add at least carbon wheels for that price.

p.s. the need for precise suspension tuning is the mark of a razor sharp design. Weak designs lead to compromises that yield Mushy rides that can never feel "spot on" You can compensate "slack design parameters" with stiffer wheels and lowering air-volume ... but you can't get precision in fit, feel and function down this path... But on the other hand: a design can be too sharp

These look great, but there's a couple of things that leave me a little disappointed. For starters, as some of the most expensive carbon bikes on the market, how do they still not have tube-in-tube cable routing? Combine that with these being possibly the ONLY premium bikes released in the last year that don't have ANY in frame storage (which seems to have become the new "fits a water bottle"), and I find myself left wanting compared to the competition. At least they didn't route anything through the headset I guess.

Found it because I’m planning on buying a SB140 LR, however I agree with most of the comments here, they are kind of over priced. I specifically like SB140 since I love mountain biking and pedaling so much, so the best option for me was 140 until I realized them prices. Do you think a better option can be found such as specialized or Santa Cruz? I’ve heard Santa Cruz Hightower or Bronson may be better options than 140, but since I’m not an expert like you all I’m so confused.

Well thank you for finding us and welcome. This bike is pretty awesome but Yeti is not known for being a “value” brand. You could check the Pivot Switchblade and see if any dealers or CompetitiveCyclist.com has sales. We’re also aware many dealers are sitting on lord of inventory so you could try calling yeti dealers and seeing if they’re willing to discount! Beyond that Norco’s new Fluid is a solid bike and very good deals can be had as they’re on sale. Also just heard Guerrilla Gravity and Alchemy have serious deals and they make solid bikes too! I’d check those out.

For my money it's remarkable a bike this expensive and well thought out can simply ignore something so essential as weight. Adding a pound to every frame while adding a few refinements and a lot of cost is kind of ridiculous. I know talking about weight in American isn't cool but that's one of the biggest advances in modern bikes. I would feel much better about spending a fortune on a Yeti if weight was improved with each iteration and not simply blown out of the water.

Is it really just yeti to be criticized on their sky high prices on the top models? It gets a bit old to constantly read yeti bashing... When I look at any of more high end brands-SC megatower with axs top build, pivot firebird, RM altitude, ibis ripmo, specialized enduro etc. All are 11-12k. Im more interested to hear how the bikes ride vs others. I don't think it's just yeti increasing their prices, it's all the brands. Things vary by 1-2k, based on the specific bike, but really it's splitting hairs. Expensive, full stop. The direct to consumer brands offer more value in terms of dollars per components, so I guess people still have choice in terms of what frame to buy. "Better" is always pretty subjective. Question re the suspension tuning- are the pressures you ended up running to make the bike feel good pretty close to yeti calculator numbers? Or higher?
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
Thank you Erin, for the most part the numbers are pretty accurate and close. The 160 took a bit more work, but that could be because I haven't actually stepped on a scale with my new Dad bod in riding gear too! Point is though, it's a fine range to get it feeling right, so weigh yourself, check it out and maybe err on the side of less sag and more compression rather than softening up. These bikes ride well though!

I'd never pay that much for a new Yeti especially if the new improvements arent realistically that noticeable for someone that doesn't ride . But I do plan on getting another Yeti the same way I got my current yeti. I like the switch infinity alot. Got the yeti much cheaper through ebay and was able to inspect it before buying it since it was close by. I'd go through pinbike or similar next time. I think it'd be stupid to pay 8 grand for a new bike even if I'd ride it frequently. Currently my several years old yeti continues satisfying me and I dont feel I'm missing out on getting the latest tech. If I see a certain yeti model like a year old thats thousands less than what a bike shop is selling it for, I may consider getting it. I waited and searched for the current yeti I still really enjoy instead of paying 8 or 10 grand. And I'll do that again instead of being driven by consumerism
