French are very friendly in my many years of repeating experience as long as you be polite and say your Bonjour and greet the shopkeeper properly. In many cities of Italy, I try to greet them, most of them ignore me.
Don't feel bad. Decades ago when I was lost in Paris, I asked an old man in English, he put a finger on his mouth. I got it. Luckily, there were two younger ladies walking by, I asked in English again. They spoke to me in English and walked with me to where I wanted to. It turned out they were British and worked for the English embassy. That just shows how ignorant some people are - the old man. That is why when mainland Chinese ask me for direction in Mandarin, I will help them. Treat people the way you would like to be treated. That makes the world a little better.

French often are pissed out if you ask them to speak english lol Long history between french and english 😂
I think mutual respect is critical, esp. when travelling to places with different languages and cultures. It is quite common that when speaking in a foreign langauge of different opinions, the voice volume will get higher and higher. The natural consequence is escalation of dispute.
