Which 5-door hatchback sports car is better? The all-new Acura Integra Type S or the Toyota GR Corolla? Automotive Engineer David Chao goes over 5 things he likes for both models, and talks about which one he prefers. Please note that in reality, the Honda Civic Type R is likely a better match to compete with the GR Corolla, but since that vehicle wasn't available for comparison, David decided to use the Integra Type S which is very similar.

I like fast cars, not tiny cars. That's the thing I'll never understand there's guys that are taller than me driving a Hatchback. I'm average in Height and I can't drive small cars it's uncomfortable, embarrassing and too small for my liking. I like Coupes, midsize Sedans, and full sized sedans.

The Acura Integra looks better, but the ability to control the all wheel drive Toyota GR is a great feature. The Integra is much more comfortable and stylish. The Integra is also better for traveling. The GR Corolla is designed more for a weekend track car than a daily driver. 9:48

The same customer is likely not making this comparison. I'd daily drive the Honda but the GR is for fun. I'd be ok with both in the driveway. I'm 3 or so years away from the GR to purchase. And I'll stick with my GS Lexus rather than the Honda

After a year of contemplating these and a few other new carts, we decided on the Integra Type S, Despite the price, lack of rear seat amenities, memory seats or passenger powered seats, we do love the engineering, suspension, steering, and especially the manual gear box of the Integra.

If it were my daily driver, Integra Type S is the clear choice. If I were lucky enough to justify a daily plus weekend fun car (I could totally do that now if my daily were an older beater and not a 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch😂) then the GR Corolla would get heavy consideration simply because of how unique it is in the North American market. Actually the GR Corolla could do daily duty, but when I was finally able to test drive onr a while back it was clear the suspension is tuned for thr track, not the somewhat poorly maintained streets and roads in my area. Not that a firm ride turns me off (Mazda 3 turbo also has that) but the GR is a little too stiffly sprung to be tolerable every day. Also the 3 cylinder thing kinda gives me pause, but Toyota/Lexus may be the only company I trust to get it right. I've also heard the 1.6l inline 3 is an overbuilt little beast that can hold up to more than the 300hp it comes from the factory with...same for the manual trans/AWD system. I think the GR Corolla is one of those cars that won't be truly appreciated until it's gone forever. It's one of those bonkers cars all Japanese makers used to put out in the late 80's and most of the 90's before they all became volume profit driven instead of driven to make unique cars that give you more for your money.

Interesting comparison. Speaking of dissimilar vehicle categories, for me the comparison has been between the Integra Type S and the IS500. The manual transmission in the ITS is the best in the business but I have been less than impressed by the fit and finish of the ITS. The bumper to fender line seems very difficult to align at the front and if the bumper is removed for any reason, it is very difficult to get the gap accurate afterward. This seems like a terrible bit of design on Acura’s part - the front portion should have been made of metal. The ITS is also surprisingly cheap in some areas, like the lack of vents or USB connectors for the rear passengers and the 4-seat design which is clearly a cost cutting measure. The IS500 is beyond reproach in terms of build quality except for bumper sag in some cars. What are your thoughts on Acura fixing some of these issues either with running changes in the 2024 MY or for the 2025 MY?

I'm curious of the cost of ownership comparatively. Toyota is well known as being incredibly reliable, and cost friendly when service is due. Acura tends to be quite a bit more expensive when it comes to servicing and maintenance. This is a real factor for many people, and I do believe it should be openly and clearly communicated as well.
@LoveLikeaHurricane
@LoveLikeaHurricane 5 ай бұрын
maintenance would be more costly with the GR Corolla because it has differentials, transaxle, transmission, and oil to change regularly. As oppose to the Integra Type S which only has Oil and Transmission fluid (the transmission fluid is in the same system as the Torsen LSD). Tires spent will also be much less on the Integra because you don't have to worry about buying a whole set of tires to keep the AWD system happy.

David, do you feel the Toyota engine will last as long as the Honda being that it seems to be pushed more to its limit
@LoveLikeaHurricane
@LoveLikeaHurricane 5 ай бұрын
just from numbers alone, common sense dictate that a 2.0L Turbo...pushing out 300#'s will be able to handle a bit more long term use than a 1.6L Turbo pushing around the same #'s. Also the 1.6T is using Boost more, which would mean more time under pressure and heat. However, the GR corolla does have Direct/Port injection, which may lend itself to lasting longer in other aspects.

I crossed shipped both of these and ended up pulling the trigger on the ITS. 1) GR Corolla is more readily available than the ITS. Especially in the core trim. The circuit is much harder to come by. There are only 304 ITS but 453 GR C listed nationwide on autotrader right now. 2) The ITS is built in an exclusive and famous factory as well. 3) The forums and FB groups are showing a lot more problems for the GR C platform than the ITS. Granted, this may not be truly representative but, in my experience it appears there are growing pains whereas the ITS is based on the CTR that has been around since 2017.

@@85CEKR Why? Is dual injection preventing the engine or rear diff from overheating when you drive the GRC hard? 🤔I don't see why DI alone would prevent you from considering a car especially when it's a great Honda engine. There are plenty of other advantages and disadvantages between the platforms to consider aside from a long term maintenance concern that really isn't a big deal.
