I bought the Gramps weeder. It can be used two ways. The way they tell you. And you can turn it over and use the forked end of the lever to pull small weeds. You'll be amazed how it grabs them. Try that. 😊

What ISN'T mentioned here anywhere is the level of physical effort required to operate these weeders. Might be worthwhile to to have a few not-so-thirty-somethings ( I'm double that . . .and some) demo the weeders. A factor for some of us is preserving shredded shoulders, creaky backs, ossified knees, and to not be the source of communal humor as we wrestle our yards. I continually run into a herd of MONSTER tall weeds and kneeling and carefully spreading the leaves to get centered for the tool just isn't in the cards if there's more than just a few truants.

I have a Grandpa's Weeder and the Gardena, I don't know why but I always choose to use the Grandpa's weeder. I just like it better but they both work great for me.

I have the Gramps. I bought it because it’s never going to break, like the plastic ones. But I also would like to have one where I can simply pop the weed out instead of manually pulling it from the weeder. The Gardena looks great, but I don’t want to spend $80 on a weeder, lol.

For clover, try using one of the rake type tools.. lightly rake thru, then pull up.. you can even twist it around and around since they grow into vines

I enjoyed watching this (at 1.5x). But your monster weeds are babies. Some of my dandelion roots are the size of large carrots. Would like to see which product is best at tackling those. Also, would be helpful to know what various types of standing weed puller interiors are made of -- plastic or metal. My Fiskars is made of cheap plastic that broke easily (now selling for $50; what a joke). It would really be helpful, too, if you could put the approximate price (at time of video). Gardena's is $80. Pfffft.

Until I win the lottery and can afford to truck in a new load of soil to replace the clay dirt (read: cement!) that's hosting the collection of obstinate prickly weeds masquerading as a lawn, I am going to buy one (maybe more) of these tools to save my aching back. You asked for feedback, so the only suggestion I would make is to put down signs with the name of each tool by each one at the end, instead of saying "this one" or "that one."

Great testing but (there is always a but :))...Granpa's works great, I have 3 acres of texas grass and it never fails. Also woods do not all have the same length root or root strength so I would say Gramps and the other top 2 are just as good.

with the fiskars, try wiggling it side to side a bit before you gently pull the weed. im having about the same luck with mine as i do with the hand digging.

make sure you check customer durability reviews where you buy it. The Scotts has a high percentage of low reviews for breaking quickly, but I suspect buyers are trying to use these when the soil is not moist enough.

do you have advice for not pulling weeds from grass? I have an acre of dirt that I need to pull weeds on. I bought a Gardtech Stand Up Weeder Puller and it's great in the soft and moist dirt but impossible in the dry hard dirt. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Twisting while lifting may be difficult for the elderly or someone with balance or back issues. I can see mt 89 year old father ( who still does some yard work ) falling over trying to twist and pull one of those at the same time. He needs stab the weed and lift. Then eject into the bucket.

There are so many variables, soil type, whether it is dry or wet, weed type and how deep the root is, and technique of the tool used. I am the one who mentioned that rotating the weed hound(dark green one with nails) was breaking off the roots, and you see not twisting made a huge difference, I have since done a simple mod to the tool, making it much easier to use, and much more effective. I wish it would let me post a photo here, as it would be much easier to see what I did. But here is what I did, I cut a piece of 3/4" thick shelving board, it is long enough to fit in the part you step on, approx 3", and the depth is to the bracket when the nails are pushed down, approx 3.5". I put it in the part you step on and ran a screw through it to hold it in place. Now when I use the weed remover, I just step on it as usual, but then I tilt the handle backward, using the board as a pivot point, it takes all the pressure of trying to pull the unit straight up with just as good of results. Seeing how well this works for me, I will build something sturdier later, like out of angle iron, although the board has been lasting.(ps, I pre-drilled the hole in the metal, so that the wood screw could pull the board tight against the wall) Sadly, it appears weed hound went out of business, as I can't find them anywhere. At one time, Harbor Freight was selling a knock off that was nearly identical and did just as good, but I heard weed hound sued, so HF quit selling them, so now we can't have that great product at all.

Nice selection to compare. But dandelions are the least of my worries even though they are 2-3x bigger than yours - there is a broad leaf weed where the leaves hug the ground a completely cover the grass with a diameter of about 5", these will kill anything under them - and they multiply. I also need to weed under hedges which have a variety of gigantic "water" types with needles, others without that pull nicely by hand (they can get 4' tall) and of course poison ivy and 5-leaf "poison" which I think is Virginia creeper. I have an almost 100 year old weeder just like the Scotts. It has a spring ejector w/trigger, but the spring is not quite stiff enough - probably has lost some tension over the decades.

The real test would be do they work in dry hard soil or gravel/rock landscape...? Asking for a friend. 😅

Would these work better if you made that last pull really fast? It seemed to work on the Fiskars in the last video.

Found this video and tried to order the Gardena one but it wouldn't arrive til May. Picked up a similar product by Garden Weasel at my local Ace and I'm impressed so far. I have this annoying wild onion stuff that isn't phased by weed killer and breaks if you pull it by hand. The Garden Weasel got out the entire thing down to the bulb. It looks pretty identical to the Gardena and has nice cushy handles.

It's dope to always see options. But Im so lazy now bro I just get the weed killer.. 😅

It looks like you tried the 3-claw Fiskars. I have the 4-claw Fiskars and it always brings weeds up intact, both tap-rooted weeds and weeds with large root balls. And yeah, it leaves a big divot. For weeds that don't need the nuclear option I use a Cobrahead, but of course that's a kneeling weeder rather than a standup one.

Yuri, I just tried to buy the Scotts puller, but it is not listed anywhere. I did find one that looks identical to the Scotts It is the Walensee Long Handel Weeder Tool. Again thanks for the video.

Which would work best for pulling weeds from rocks? My front yard is entirely those small red like… what are they called, lava rocks? There is that black plastic stuff underneath but there’s so many small reddish weeds. They’re super easy and satisfying to pull, I can get most up with just my reacher grabber lol. It’s very tedious though and the backyard is dirt and smaller rocks. I can pull them but the cleanup sucks. Don’t know much about gardening, just starting to get into it and having fun. I’ve watched both videos for best weed pullers now. So just wondering if there’s something to help on rocks or if I’m just gonna need to put on some knee pads and power through 😂

You know your weeds. I’ve learned to look at the roots. Try leaving the hole. Think of as aerating the lawn.

I don't think root length is a fair comparison test, they can arbitrarily break wherever they want. But I do understand the thought behind it. I'm going with the Grampa's for now, partly due to price and availability. The Gardena is hard to find at this time, Amazon is out.Was very interesting to compare last years review with 2024.

The first pull on the grandpa weeder you went away from the foot lever. Then you started pulling towards the lever and opening the blades. I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to lean away from the foot peg, no?

The old green one is great for weeds tougher than dandelions, such as crabgrass...because it never breaks. The Fiskars will break if the weeds are too hard-rooted.

Do you recommend carrying a bag of dirt and filling in each hole as you remove each weed?

Ok I think I have the ultimate challenge. We have these very tall weeds with huge roots, on an incline, in hard dirt. We also have pigweed.

These should really just be called dandelion pullers. I look at the weeds in my garden and there's no way these are pulling the thistle, comfrey, mullein, or burdocks. ...Doesn't help that they're all over 6 feet at this point but that's my fault.

My issue is wanting to see the best garden weeder, not the best lawn weeder, so while this was somewhat helpful, it isn't the same conditions I'm dealing with. I also don't care about pristine lawns, as clover is an important early food for pollinators.

They say twist, you are turning, twist is like a beer bottle top, about 1/4 rotate.

I thought the point was to not have to bend over...you use your hand to pre-spread the weeds with some of the pullers...that skews everything

You shouldn't have to adjust things by hand at ground level with a stand-up weed puller. You should be able to stab, yank (or twist or whatever) and go. So far I'm up to the ninja

I thought these were meant to eliminate bending over to remove weeds. And yet, you are doing exactly that every single time before you use the tool, and again after.

I understand that you are plagued with dandelions, but I've got crabgrass, clover, and lespedeza, I've got like 10 dandelion in just over an acre. This review should be entitled the Best Dandelion Puller, it does not help me understand what is best for a broad range of weeds that many of us have. Great work though.
