Steve Hammes New Car Reviews

The all-new 5 Series is here and like BK you can have it your way. Four cylinders, six cylinders, no cylinders - BMW’s midsize sedan lineup is as robust as ever including this first-ever fully electric model, it too available in 3 flavors but none as exhilarating as this. Meet the i5 M60 - a nearly 600 horsepower, all-wheel drive, high-performance EV that’s so quick and deliciously futuristic it’ll leave electric car naysayers speechless.
MSRP as-tested: $98,000

I love ev's but this is a toy. The interior is like every other bmw - no design risks, no interesting materials... Just 2 big screens and ambient lighting. I think in the next 10 years we're going to see luxury EVs have to do more than just put in a couple of big screens and ambient lighting and call it a day. There's just not enough here to justify that cost.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m sure the build quality is there however its interior and exterior design is a disappointment.

Where as I do not understand this at all. At least average in most luxury areas and a drive train that is so powerful, with smooth and near instantaneous responsiveness. Nearly as fast as an E63 for $30k less more refined and is cheap to run while not chunking large of amounts of CO2 out the exhaust. An amazing machine. I guess if you want to compare it to imaginary cars from 2034 it may fall short.

@@DrewFu319 The difference in speed is such a small piece of the overall picture. The M60 is plenty fast (you really don't need anymore speed than it has, unless you have a small penis), but what really makes the M60 leaps above Tesla is all the stuff that really matters. Fit and finish, ride quality, cabin quietness, no squeaks and rattles, and the technology. BMW leans in on Apple CarPlay where it's non-existent on Tesla, Apple CarKey is super convenient and also missing on the Tesla. I like that the car is still a traditional sedan, I have a turn signal stalk! I still struggle with the look of the rear end, and of course I could use more range, but for a first electric 5 series, BMW did a pretty fantastic job.

@Alexx44444 Ай бұрын
It's biggest flaw comes from it not being a purpose built EV, lacking a front trunk and some general packaging that could allow for a much better experience. For the price you can also get considerably more power, which is one of the only reasons to choose an EV in the first place.

I don’t want a bunch of EV lovers to pounce. I’m not anti-EV. This car’s fail is range. Until you make them where they get 400 miles on a charge, these are boutique purchases. That’s reality friends. Nothing wrong with the price, tech etc.

EV owner and potential buyer (tomorrow) of one of these. The only downside to this is that it has less range than my 2015 P85D did at 9 years old, and FAR less than my 2024 Q8 Etron, which I don’t love, but for lots of different reasons that don’t include range.

I really like the I5M60. Just waiting to see what issue are address in year or so to see if it’s more reliable than the ICE versions especially those with V8. All the plastic engines parts causing more harm than necessarily needing to.

At some point the battery pack on EV’s will need to be replaced. When that occurs the cost to replace them will likely be more than what the vehicle is worth. This is not a car to pass down to your children or keep in the family. It is a deeply impressive disposable object.

@@stevehammes You make a good point, but you’re betting that I’m going to have to get a new gasoline engine. I drive a Lexus GX. It will last a very long time. ALL EV’s will absolutely need new battery packs.
@Jim-Slade
@Jim-Slade 18 күн бұрын
Buyers/lessees of these cars will not keep them for the 10yrs the battery is warranted. It’s an irrelevant point, at least for the original owner. By ten years, recycling tech will have matured, and a replacement battery will be under $10k; much cheaper than a replacement ICE.
@Enforcer_WJDE
@Enforcer_WJDE Ай бұрын
You say there is less that can go wrong with an EV......how many batteries are there and how many connections do they have? Every single one of them can be a failure point and we know batteries suddenly die because of that. Not hating EVs but they still need to advance to become a viable option to ICE vehicles.....especially price wise.

I’ve owned an electric car now for over three years. I know other people that have electric cars. I honestly can tell you that I don’t know a single one of us that has had a battery issue. As a matter of fact, I have never brought my vehicle in for any non-routine service and even that has only included tire changes for the season

I'm not saying it's a bad car, clearly it's beautiful, but the Model S is like 4700 lbs if I'm not mistaken and has a 100kw/hr battery. WIth such a heavy car, I'd hoped it would have a bigger battery and range.
