Such a great engine from GM. I drove it years ago in the Yukon XL. Great power, refinement, and 26-28 mpg going 75-85 mph with a full load of people and gear on the highway. The fuel economy gap is massive compared to the 5.3 and 6.2, and the instant torque is so addicting.

Great review, I hear a lot of people talking about DEF and oil usage, I think that happens with heavy footed people or towing. I have not had any oil usage in 4000 mile oil change intervals and I go through the 5 gallon DEF every 6000 miles, and my overall MPG has been 27 with most trips over 20 miles coming in over 30 MPG...Diesel prices however are awful during winter months in Northeast.

FWIW, when I was in the market last spring for a High Country, I took a chance on a 12k-mile '22 ZR2 with the 6.2. Same color as this one. I agree with many of your comments. Surprisingly good driveability, good ride quality, very comfortable cabin. My dislikes were few, but important. The hood, with those cosmetic humps, made the front-view cam a MUST, especially with the lack of front parking sensors. And driving on a bright sunny day, those humps reflect sunlight right into your eyes. My truck's VIN started with a 3. Not necessarily an indictment, but two things drove me nuts - first was the paint quality. Quite a bit of clearcoat failure, and very thin paint overall. Also, the suspension and driveline noises were annoying and always made me wonder what was wrong. Both of these were items I've not experienced in latest-gen 1500s with VINs starting with a 1. Overall, it was too much of a compromise. With resolution of supply issues, I got into a High Country and have been incredibly pleased.

Yes, the Bose they have in these GM trucks is quite a bit weak compared to what Ford and Ram have. As petty as it might sound, that is one of a couple of reasons that’s turning me away from buying a new ZR2 or AT4X 2500 HD. I’m really big on the sound systems in my vehicles. I like to go on long late night drives solo and just listen to music to zone out. If GM updated the sound system and quality a bit then I’d likely just walk in and purchase one of those 2 trucks from them. For the price they want for these trucks, the least GM can do is add a much better sound system to these $100k+ trucks. I shouldn’t have to seek an aftermarket system with that heavy of a price tag.

Mention it a bit there at the end…I think part of the problem is the research and knowledge that needs to go into buying this engine. If you aren’t going to be putting a lot of miles and longer trips on it the gas versions are the better choice, due to the emissions equipment and negligible difference in cost to drive with the increased price of diesel, def, oil and fuel filter changes. I had the previous gen 3.0L and really enjoyed it, but it’s a bit of fuss if you’re not going to be driving it long distances regularly.

Good video and review, is that zr2 from Lunghamer? 14, Hines drive the muddy Hines drive parks, all familiar! I live right by there. I got an AT4x and ordered that exact zr2 (changed mind). I was sort of in that same head space getting one of these, can tow my car to track when needed, occasional off road, fits in my garage, I like the floaty luxo feel ride, and the diesel isn’t brutal on mpg like the 6.2 - tho their is DEF cost (minimal when not towing) and diesel is more at times than premium per gallon. So far my mpg is 21 avg commuting to work, 23 highway. I can get around 25 if slowing down right lane on highway. I think the lift and tires kill mpg compared to say an rst, high country or even Denali in the gmc world, These are pricey no doubt. As of Nov and Dec 23 they were offering gm employee discount and Costco members rebate so discount was about 10% on these off of msrp. Cross shopped Tundra Trd and 1794 but really no tundra incentives and all the ones I drove had rattles, one had a leak in sunroof, another air leak on front door window at speed, was not impressed - tho I hear 24 Tundra quality is improved.

What gets me is all the Silverado 1500s get a 24gal fuel tank, regardless of the engine size and mpg. 24gal is peanuts in a truck, but tells me the truck is designed for everyday grocery shopping and not actually pulling anything any meaningful distance. Also, for regular gas engines, it seems Ford can crank out more power per liter displacement than Chevy, AND achieve better mpg while doing that.
