OK. Red Bull's Max Verstappen in China again conducted a masterclass. For the minor placings, though, there was again much to admire and to dissect. Lando Norris finished a strong second for McLaren-Mercedes; Sergio Perez underscored the efficiency of the RB20-RBPT Honda by finishing P3; and Ferrari were P4/P5, ahead of Aston's Fernando Alonso, who set a flamboyant fastest lap. Peter Windsor looks back at all this - and more - in the fourth video of his Chinese GP quartet.

Agree with PW 100%, Fernando's catch was one of those moments of pure brilliance, a move of instant instinct born of endless miles racing top-level cars of every type, honing his god-given talent into diamond-sharp race driver perfection. Watching that level of skill is a lot of what's enjoyable about F1 and top level motorsport to me as well. BTW, the top IndyCar drivers, particularly Alex Palou, Colton Herta and Josef Newgarden, have some of the fastest, most precise hands in racing, as they need to. Those cars are a HANDFUL, and on street or road circuits IndyCar drivers probably have more whip-fast opposite lock corrections in one LAP than F1 drivers do in an entire race. The onboards are pretty amazing to watch. Cheers PW on another great recap!

I totally agree with the comment ‘poetry in motion’ regarding Fernando’s racing skill but that is what Max is showing us already for more than years every race. It’s Max and how he is taking the corners why he is always faster than his teammate and everyone else. Wow… yes the RB is a good car but it’s Max that writes poetry in motion with that car.

Lovely analysis Peter. Always a pleasure. This past weekend in China, the car control and positioning decisions were lovely to watch. The track is wide enough, with tightening radius medium-speed corners that encourage drivers to explore lines and use the track to manage their tires differently than the drivers around them. It was a good race to see the difference between drivers and cars. Alonso's car control was brilliant. I also enjoyed watching Charles and Checo in the final phase of the race, where I first assumed Checo would quickly get by Charles, but he didn't. Even with DRS, it took him way more laps than it should have, given he is in that car, to get by Charles. Upon viewing, it seems part of this was being in the dirty air of Charles, but looking at Charles' onboard, he was placing the car well to be in Checo's way but still not take too much life out of his tires in defense. And lastly, a lovely drive by Max. It would have been nice to see more onboards of Max highlighting some of his driving characteristics and car positioning around the lap compared to Checo in the same car.

I do not care if the father is rich and is the owner of the team. If Stroll proves at the track he is worth, fine, no problem. But I think that by now, we all agree that the only thing preventing Aston from scoring more and being a serious contender in the upper midfield is precisely Stroll. Soon or later, they will need to make a decision, or force one if they want this to be a viable project.
@jkbzz
@jkbzz Ай бұрын
People easily forget Norris dad is super rich and I think a part shareholder at McLaren. Yet the two lads are miles apart. Lando is actually talented, puts his head down and works his ass off. Stroll should be doing something else, that seat can go to an actual driver.

I wish the tyres were more durable. They all go to hards asap, every race, and even then they slow down to make them last. Strategy is a fine thing, but I for one would like to see more all out racing. Even in the sprint they were conserving tyres. That’s not racing in my book. I might as well watch an economy run.
@erikahuxley
@erikahuxley Ай бұрын
Then you have to watch WEC, they go hard, even Alonso said so when he did Le Mans.
@likilikiki
@likilikiki Ай бұрын
More durable???? What would be the difference between a 30 lap stint on hards vs a 30 lap stint on mediums? Making the tyres more durable will change nothing except maybe a second or two of laptime. Those ridiculously high tyre pressures is what's killing the racing.
@jm061088
@jm061088 Ай бұрын
I think the biggest factor is the tires have such a small sweet spot with optimal operating temperature. Pirelli need to work on expanding the optimal temperature range and also the tires seem to lose a ton of performance if you overheat them. Maybe give them the ability to be pushed flat out for about 10 laps before they start to overheat and then wear out in about 20ish. You still have the issue of conserving tires to do less stops but if you can at least make it viable as a strategy you might get some push vs conserve strategic battles. The drivers need the ability to push hard behind a driver to catch them and then fight to pass them without either having to cool the tires or risk ruining the set for the rest of the stint. They have to work so hard to get the tires in just the right window while simultaneously being close enough to attack the driver ahead for long enough to get a pass done without having to drop back and cool the tires off again and restart the process that it makes overtaking extremely hard aside from DRS passing. Look at Alonso in the sprint, he was conserving and doing just enough in sectors 1 and 2 to stay ahead of Sainz then going hard out of the long corner onto the long back straight to be able to keep himself ahead. The caused Carlos to have to pull a huge move into turn 6 or 7 that turned into a little bit of a melee but was exciting as hell. This was possible because you can’t follow someone that close and push flat out throughout an entire lap without overheating the tires.

A great idea would be to interview the race engineers at 94 Williams. David Brown or John Russell as ask whether the rear suspension was over complicated and whether a traditional rear suspension would have been a better choice. Why did the 91 Williams not have floor stall. Ask Geoff Willis head of Aero why they did not use flow viz to find sidepod stall preseason? Lots of typical articles recycle old redundant facts. A fresh approach can be invigorating and very interesting. The story of the cars specific problems and how they were fixed to make it win the construction's championship winner would be very insightful and intriguing especially given that the previous two cars were so amazing.

Petwr, I agree about the Texas having a 3rd Car. It could be a spare, or used by a local wildcard, OR - hear me out- the reserve drivers like Liam Lawson, Ollie Behrman, etc could be in that car, getting real time experience in the cars they will be driving come next season or whatever.

Don't know if you will see this, Peter, but yes good money for Ferrari Clienteli, I'm sure. About 75 cars finished that Mugello race with various levels of fender and bumper abuse. Of the 5 DNFs, of course one was a burn-to-the-ground fire. And while it is fun to poke Ferrari for that, I have to say the cars were pretty bulletproof through the season. I didn't have a single mechanical issue. And heaven knows we were really hard on those engines and transmissions.

I don't think Lando was expressing a fundamental dislike of ever using engine braking to induce extra rotation but as Nico Rosberg said on commentary he simply didn't want to use up his rears to achieve that extra rotation due to the long term concequences.

Max looked like a deity on all the racing laps all weekend. Just this brutally efficient racing God slapping the hopes and dreams right out of the hands of those poor bastards who found themselves near him for whatever reason beyond his control. I mean we see it all the time, and so many people take it for granted, but what this man is doing is insane. Also I DO like that they had a special pull off for Zhou at the end. I honestly think that every track should do this, have a spot for the "local" driver that didn't finish on the podium to pull into to acknowledge the fans. As most fans who physically come to the races live in that area and as such many support that specific driver or drivers, and that driver should be recognized for drawing in a crowd of people for F1.

Peter, with all due respect, Piastri was like 0.5s a lap slower than Lando on the first stint. He did not do a great job. I like him and his junior credentials suggest he is very good, but it's his second year and he is absolutely not ontop of his tire managment, which is what hurt him today (predictably). Also, I feel that the FIA took their time with the VSC for Bottas. In my opinion, they should have instantly put on VSC as a conservative measure and to buy themselves time. It mostly keeps the race as it is anyway and prevents someone pumping from adrenaline from locking up and sliding right into the back of that car. Poor job by the responsible bodies IMO.

It's not that Perez is slow, he just doesn't like a pointy car like Max - they have different driving styles. Remember there was a period where Perez was much closer to Max when the car was more balanced, then he started complaining that development was moving away from him. They (Redbull) are prioritising the development of a pointy car because Max can handle it and that's how he likes it.

Noted your mention of third cars. How about this, Peter? At sprint weekends, teams must run one reserve driver in the sprint instead of one of the main drivers, bringing a third (identical) car. This would give up-and-coming drivers experience and exposure and teams a better measure of their ability. Credit the regular driver who sits out the sprint with any points the reserve earns. Yes, there are logistical problems, but F1 has worked out harder ones.

Is the Lando short corner thing influenced by the car? Lando has only ever driven McLaren in F1 and it has always had a reputation for being a tricky car and not really to the drivers liking. Does the car simply not reward trying to shorten the corners as the Red Bull does? The Red Bull is clearly superb and was a good car even when let down by the powertrain by contrast the McLaren seems to need constant nursing.

Sainz was on a quali lap. So maybe the reason he didn't catch the car was because his entry speed was much higher compared to Alonso in the race? Nothing to take away from Alonso because he is brilliant. Have you guys also seen how fast Alonso switched on DRS after that moment. Most drivers would have taken a second to recover before switching on DRS after such a moment.

Wish more teams were as aggressive with tyre strategies as Alonso/AM were today. 30-40 lap hard stints is what makes for a boring watch. 1 stoppers should be outlawed and Pirelli should develop tyres that can handle lower pressures. Thoughts?
