A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZfaq, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZfaq channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZfaq channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

I also went for purples: kohlrabi, sprouting broccoli, burgundy pod bush beans, and Japanese radish. I have my fingers cross d as I’m starting a new garden on the Oregon coast.

It is such a beautiful colour! I am excited about purple bush beans, purple snap peas and purple kale this year. I was thinking of getting a lot of purple basil to use in my front lawn as ground cover but stopped myself.

I find that all purple veggies attrack less bugs. And purple beans/peas are easier to find on the vine! If you like crispy lettuce, try Ice Queen lettuce!

Wanted to second West Coast rosemary seed. I've been starting my own rosemary for the past 5 years and WC really outperforms all others including McKenzie, Lindenberg & OSC. I've used fridge stratification the past 2 years with WC and that also is very helpful. Much better germination with WC. Then bigger, stronger and faster growing plants.The other companies are fine for lettuce, beans, peas and beefsteak tomato. Other WC herbs that have been fantastic for me the past few years are Dolly Basil and their Cilantro. I've been gardening over 30 years with a lot of trial and error. Usually, more error. But when I find seeds that outperform I stick with them. Thank you for your Canada specific information and honesty.

I love your interest in color in the garden. Also, flowers are not just good for neighbors but can help attract pollinators and beneficial insects to the garden. I have the perennial May Night Sage at each corner of my veggie bed-it has beautiful deep purple blooms and bumblebees and honey bees love it! Alyssum attracts hover flys which keep aphids at bay. And a big yes to red lettuces-they taste about the same but are super-glorious.

I have found my perfect brocoli. It's broccolini actually. ARTWORK broccolini. I get brocoli florets all summer and fall in my zone (5b). I do cover it with netting. I just can't starr the seedling indoors...luckily my local greenhouse has them as starts.

I grow Purple Mist, Sugar Magnolia (purple snap pea), Golden Yellow (snow pea) and Sugaree (green) all mixed together. I love how pretty all the colours look

I heard that silica helps with not having your produce wilt right away. You mentioned silica in a previous video so I thought that was interesting. Might be worth a try putting some in the soil. A good seaweed fertilizer is an organic option.

We’ve been waiting for this one 🎉🎉🎉 Also, I don’t know why, but when you took a sip of redbull of all things, much respect haha! I just think it’s funny to see other gardeners who are normal people. Sometimes it feels like those obnoxiously health focused gardeners are so condescending. So seeing something just so normal is refreshing. Thank you for being yourself! ❤ You inspire me so much.

I’m zone 3 in Central Alberta & am concentrating on growing more perennials from seed, like Borage, Lovage. I’m going to put them in my permaculture front yard where I have lots of Seabuckthorn, comfrey, Bob Gordon Elderberry, Adams Elderberry, Bergamot, Hollyhock, Calendula (self-seeding, not perennial, Day Lily, Yarrow. It seems that our many Mule deer don’t bother the herbs! For carrots, I’ve done foot wide rows, sprinkled on top & covered (after wetting) with boards & they germinated well. After plants are about 1/2” tall, I remove the boards. My sister puts small seeds on paper towel strips, covers them with a flour paste & adds another layer of paper towel. Then plants them in a row.

@@GardeningInCanada I did that last year it was a mistake. I am going to plant it on the outskirts of my garden away from my veggies as it took a lot of the nutriants from my soil. This year I am going to plant dwarf sunflowers in my raised beds and see how thats going to work.😊

It looks like you got the orangelo thyme(has a hint of orange/citrus), I got those a few years ago and it smells great! I’m not sure if it’s because I had it in a GreenStalk tower (I recently transplanted it to a bed) but it grew much slower than the other types of thyme I’ve started. Thanks for the Flea Beetle advice, I hadn’t heard that before.

Lol no , it’s just the conditions where my garden is are almost sud Arctic . I make my own soil from what’s here ( which is very poor soil) I add rabbit poop, moose poop, caribou poop, sea weed and sand for drainage. I grow 6 kinds of potatoes, bright lights Swiss chard, Dutch flat cabbage , carrots, turnips, 3 kinds of garlic, French beans, parsnips and celery. I have grown corn with limited success , this year I might try an Alaskan variety.

Great video!! 🎉 I really appreciate all of the info on what can be grown in containers since I don’t have the best plot to have a bunch of beds. I grow lots of varieties of peppers, so those are always on the list, but this year I am definitely trying some of the herb containers, lettuce- some indoors, basil, tomatoes, carrots, microgreens, beets, radish, zucchini. I’m making raised beds, grow bags, and some things are going in decorative beds in the front. 6b - Michigan

That sage is gorgeous! I wasn't able to find it on the Westcoast Seeds site. Laughing because I was never a flower person then I read about companion planting with flowers, then got sucked into this whole landscaping with native plants, THEN I got annual flowers because the people say I need something to fill in scalpy lawn patches while the native perennials grow... Zone 3 in SK. Growing as much as I can of as many things as I can. Right now most excited for carrots (Chantenay and Red Cored Chantenay), purple kale, Sugar Magnolia snap peas, blue jade corn, lovage, Kpa Kpo peppers, Chimayo Peppers (35 days to green and 55 days to red!) and Black Eyed Susans. Questions 1. Do pelleted or coated seeds last less time than regular seeds? I have coated zinnia seeds and am realising I won't be able to plant all the seeds I have in these boxes *welp* 2. Where can I get petunias that *aren't* pink or red?

I laughed at your discovery of "more rosemary"! I do that every year with at least one crop. Last year I grew galahad tomatoes and the taste was so good that I had to repurchase for this year, despite the $1 per seed price tag. I am going to buy starts for the rest of my tomatoes, because I really commonly end up with leggy plants, despite the grow lights. With how much you rave about those onions, I'll try them next year. I have already started my onions, so too late for this season.

Hey, I definitely recommended Microgreens from Organic matters as well. Well priced and a canadian company. Weve been growing micros in the winter for a quick nutritious substitute between our lettuce crops in our hydro gardens.

Hi Ashley, I looked on your link of seeds, and all of the ones labeled "Unavailable in the US" really ARE available. Here's a list of seedsmen who can probably help us US gardeners: Fedco Seeds; True Leaf; Rare Seeds; Territorial Seeds; Johnny's Seeds; Botanical Interests; Burpee; Select Seeds(hard to find heirloom flowers; and Tomato Fest. Thank you for lighting the seed starting fire within!!!

Just as a bit of clarification from a Canadian, our seed companies have been restricted from selling pepper and tomato seeds to customers in the US. I think it was in 2019 that the USDA put those shipping restrictions in effect, so when you see it noted on Canadian stores that they are not available in the US, it's more that the Canadian company cannot ship them to the US. There are a lot of complexities with selling seeds across borders (for instance, some of the seed companies you listed, like botanical interest, don't ship to Canada at all due to complexities and costs in obtaining all the correct permissions from both sides of the border).

@@angelagreen5144 Thank you so much Angela. I had a dear friend in England, a Head Gardener at an estate, and we had all sorts of problems also. There is international testing rigors, but you are so right, and in my opinion once the seeds have been tested for all sorts of things, we should be able to send and trade and grow all over the world. Around $200 dollars worth of seeds. Not including what you already have. It might be advisable to save your own seed. I brought my seed hall costs down to $30 dollars from $200 dollars. most of that is for new varieties.

I have found squash "Days to harvest" isn't necessarily correct. They need a couple weeks hot weather followed by, at least, two months frost free. The length of time prior to the hot weather isn't as important.

My neighbor knows where they don't pay taxes don't judge! I had my own bell pepper seeds that I gathered myself and nearly 100 percent not science but did great and better than the 2 packs of my others that were brought last year. I'm trying to listen about finding seeds in my general location but location isn't always available for the buyer to learn. Thanks

@@GardeningInCanada I could be wrong but I think top set onions, tree onions Egyptian walking onions, are native to Canada. The Potato onion and Welsh onions are also perennial. Not the best place to order from but I ordered Egyptian walking onions from Amazon. The last 2 I'm going to try Etsy.

Other women have ridiculous high heal shoe and clothing hauls. Real women have seed hauls. But like the other ladies with overstuffed closets, I sometimes get too excited when I look at the seed catalogues and have too many unrealistic time lines, and buy more seeds than I have room or time to grow.

@@GardeningInCanada raspberries-which are starting to come along, blueberries-which haven't produced yet, a black currant that seems to like the front yard and a chokecherry. Would like to find strawberries or other perennial berries that would work. Just having a tough time with the soil we now have which is heavy clay.
