2024 GWM Cannon Alpha Review: Honestly? AUSSIE UTES will NEVER be the same…

The Aussie Ute landscape will NEVER be the same now that the GWM Cannon Alpha is here…
For less than a BASE MODEL 4x4 Toyota HiLux Dual Cab or Ford Ranger Dual Cab, you can get a BIGGER ute with the SAME towing capacity, similar practicality, and an interior that would make 100,000 Utes / Trucks / Bakkie’s BLUSH.
The 2024 GWM Cannon Alpha is here, and is an epic - if not underpowered - take on the Ute. It sits somewhere in size between a Ford Ranger and Ford F-150 full size American truck, while starting at just over $50,000 Aussie dollars INCLUDING on-road costs…
It’s also THE FIRST UTE in Australia to be sold with both a 2.4L Turbo-Diesel AND a 2.0L Turbo-Petrol Hybrid. That’s right, an EV-ish ute!
So, today we’re going to give the GWM Cannon Alpha a THOROUGH Review, looking at its huge Tank 500-like exterior, move onto its Luxury interior (yes, it includes massage seats!), check out the practicality of the tub, payload and towing ability; of course we will also LAUNCH IT from 0-100km/h to see just how fast - or slow - it is, and of course we’ll give it lots of sauce with our on-road hardcore test.
So should you buy a GWM Cannon Alpha? Let’s talk about that in today’s review!!

In regarding to window goes down when opening back seat door, according to Chinese car media, it is because this car are extremely well sealed, as you can see the back door are curved in at closer edge to provide better seal, when you close door, air pressure between internal and external will out of balanced, which make the door harder to close. a gap at window will prevent such air balance issue.

Gone from a 2020 steed to a 2022 4x2 Cannon Diesel Ute to a 2023 hybrid SUV to a 2023 4x4 Diesel Ute and guess where I’m heading next. Yup 2024 Cannon Alpha 4x4 Diesel Ute. You beauty. The old Holden Colorado/Trailblazer did that window opening thing. Apparently, Holden claimed that their cabin was very tightly sealed to the point that pressure needs to be relieved when closing the door to make door closes more comfortable; thus, the window opens upon opening the door and closes once the door is closed. I'm not really sure if it really creates a difference though 😅

Love it when reviewers look at a 4x4 twin cab ute and think that things like chucking it through twisty roads and 0-100 and quarter mile times are in any way relevant. Nobody cares about those things. Nobody. They’re NOT sports cars. Nobody…apart from these reviewers…expects them to handle and accelerate like a Ferrari.

The reason the window goes down when you open it is to help reduce pressure for when you shut the door, just so you don’t need to use as much force. The Holden Colorados and Trailblazers had the same feature just before they were discontinued.

I think the petrol/hybrid will outlast the diesel. These modern diesels with their dpf, turbos, and egrs seem to have all the problems which the old diesels avoided. And when they eventually go poopy in their trowsers, they cost several times more to fix than an equivalent petrol engine. Savings in fuel are then handed over to the diesel mechanic. Ask any mazda, subaru or volkswagen diesel owner

Great vid. The one question i was hoping might be answered directly is whether you see enough value to jump from spending, say, the mid forty thousands on Cannon X..to potentially in the low sixty thousands for an Alpha. Or whether the Alpha just points to the X being really good value for what it is. Keen to know how your spending decision would play out..

It is very hard to change the mindset of people. They think all Chinese vehicles are junk. This is reinforced by the physical features of Chinese people. Even if the Chinese bring out a Rolls Royce for a fraction of the price, they will be unfazed. To me, this ute is amazing, I have seen a ute with a panoramic sunroof! It's AWD, so all four wheels are always driven. It also has a low range. I know that because in the Philippines where I live, even the basic version, called the Cannon Pilot 4x4, is AWD with low range. Even the basic version has leather seats and most of the important stuff that the one described here has. How would you like an AWD dual cab pickup truck (admittedly with 6 speed manual transmission rather than the 8 speed automatic) for less than $30K AUD? I've seen the off-road performance of the GWM Cannon in the Philippines, and it's outstanding. In the Philippines the basic version has a 2.0 TDi.

A good review of an interesting vehicle. I particularly appreciated your insights into the practicality of the vehicle. Big on the outside, big in the cabin, smaller in the tub, with a lower load capacity than competitors. It's absolutely loaded with creature comforts and niftty storage ideas (was it designed by someone from Ikea?). However, a Mazda BT50 CTR 3.0 manual (aka Isuzu..), is a similar driveway price, has much better performance, is more practical (1 tonne load capacity), and has decent interior appointments. The Mazdazu will also hold its value better.

The Alpha is definently not a dedicated work vehicle it's a touring/everyday vehicle. That being said I've never met anyone with a Hilux that has put more than the groceries in the tub. The overwhelming majority of ute owners in Australia use them as daily drivers so the tub dimensions just aren't a massive issue. And most people will never put more than 300kg in the tub on a camping trip at most.

I always laugh when ppl being up resale value. Of course it's not going to hold the same as a toyota... you already saved that money in the purchase price and well and truly in interest if you buy on finance

Hey guys. I live in South Africa, I worked for Toyota for a couple of years. My own Ute is a 2017 Isuzu DMax. I would rather drive an old Japanese bakkie with 400k kms than the newest Chinese Ute, their built quality is up to shit!!!! No hate...only facts...the only bakkies that survive here in SA...is Toyota's and Isuzu's. And I believe most people in Australia feel the same!❤

The older cannon was garbage and I assume this will be much the same. Cool sounding features but none of them work and the gear box overheats on the most basic tracks. Just got rid of it not interested in adding 4x4 mods to garbage car

This review is extremely superficial. Pretty much going through the brochure and doing a quick drive. I know the journalist says he’s been driving it for a week, but we don’t get any real insights into that time. What about build quality? Brand reputation? Any research into the reliability of the model or components? Dealer network? Is it a GWM gearbox? Cost of servicing? Resale value of similar past models? Any new car will look shiny and have some nice features but if I were in the market for one of these I’d like a review that tells me something I can’t see for myself. The ownership experience and cost is very different to the showroom experience and initial purchase price.

Should ban ALL utes of this size unless you have a special licence as a lumberjack or farmer. 95% of Aus buyers do not need them and would be totally fine with a Diahatsu HiJet from a work-use POV.
