Great video, far more detailed than others, so video length well worth it. I own the old 2019 Kona EV model and recently test drove the 2024 Kona, the Kia Nero & Kia EV6 - the Nero has the old Kona 2019 software, the EV6 the Kona 2021 software with this new Kona 2024 software so far ahead especially the 3D parking cameras. Boot space in the Nero is now much the same as the 2024 Kona, so the new Kona ticks all my boxes. I do wonder how manufacturers choose what to put in and leave out of their car models though. The same spec in the UK has an electric boot/tailgate, electric passenger seat and a domestic plug socket next to the rear USB chargers, all of which could easily be in the Canadian Ultimate spec. One thing you forgot was the heated charger door, activated when the rear demist is switched on, great if a front frozen charging door is a potential issue.

Thanks! No, Android auto won't start the preheating. If you're using Android Auto for nav, you'd want to start the preconditioning manually in the ev settings. User profile unfortunately doesn't remember the seating position in the Kona EV.... It does in the ioniqs though

Great overview of the Kona EV. It’s definitely on my short list. On an unrelated note, you mentioned owning an Ioniq 6. I’m considering that, too, although I like that the Kona has the newer CCMC setup. Has your Ioniq given you any issues with snow and water infiltration on the underside of the vehicle? Some people are mentioning packed snow getting into the front motor area and inside the vehicle on the underside of the wheel well, which for one person caused the wheel well to pop out and rub against the tire. These things are steering me more to Kona, but I’d appreciate your perspective.
@edsgarage001
@edsgarage001 4 ай бұрын
Didn't have any issues in the snow at all. But even if I did, I'd still take the ioniq 6. It's bigger, faster, all wheel drive, looks nicer imo and charges twice as fast. The Kona is great, but there's a reason the ioniq 6 is so much more expensive

Looking forward to getting my Kona EV ultimate next Thursday - Your last 20 minutes of the video saved me some time in getting familiar with the UI. I'm guessing you can assign your steering wheel shortcut key to driver assistance like at @39:00? I don't want the driver attention warning interfering and telling me what to do. Being a motorcylist, I tend do scan around and do shoulder checks and actively scan the road. I don't need the system telling me that I'm not paying attention. Likewise, the speed limit warning will get very tiresome in Wales, where it regularly changes from 30 to 20 to 30 to 20 in a space a few hundred yards. I know you can hold down the lane keeping assist button down for 3 seconds to disable it. Again, I don't want my vehicle to think that torque steering me into a ditch when I'm on a narrow country road because I've encroached on the white line is a sensible thing!

Canada is a pretty small market plus they're saving costs. Keep in mind, in Europe a top trim Kona EV is going to set you back A LOT more then in Canada. For example, converted to Canadian dollars, the top trim Kona EV is $75,000 in the Netherlands. That's $15,000 more then in Canada after accounting for taxes. That's a lot more profit in Europe then in Canada.

There are a few things missing that frustrates me, like not being able to open the tailgate with at least a latch inside, or a button on the keyfob. It doesn't even need to be powered. We have the Kia EV6 and I curse every time I have to open the tailgate, especially when my hands are full or the back is dirty. But I get it. Even with all of the missing features, the Kona has great ones that others are missing. I'm still excited to get one as well 😊.

Pretty much every EV has run into 12v battery issues... With the ioniq 5, yes the issue has been "fixed". But it was originally caused by high amperage AC charging. I'm a big proponent of charging at 240v 16amps, which is more than enough for 90% of people out there. You'd never run into the iccu issue charging at that speed. 16amps 240volts is enough if your average daily commute is less then 150km.

Not sure I understand... I check my tire pressures before every trip to make sure they're equal. Helps with tire wear, braking and range efficency. How does it make you crazy?
@edsgarage001
@edsgarage001 3 ай бұрын
A few reasons.... 1. Tpms sensors are expensive, and I don't feel like needing to buy a full set for a second set of tires and wheels (winter tires for example) 2. The sensors only last a few years, so I'll need to also replace them eventually 3. I'm perfectly capable of checking my tire pressure with a pressure gauge, and even without doing so, I can generally tell if one is flat or going flat just by looking at it or by how it feels while driving. 4. If I really wanted a tpms system, I could add the external ones that I can transfer onto my other set of wheels quickly and easily. 5. I often lower the pressure of my tires if I'm driving on Forest service gravel roads, and I then need to stare at an error. 6. When there's an issue with a sensor or my winters are on, or a tire is low, I can't even use my remote start, as it simply won't work if there's an error despite that error having nothing to do with the engine or EV climate system. My vehicle ownership isn't like yours .. I have two vehicles, both have tpms systems, and for the reasons I've indicated, I wish neither of them did.
@MrLongraphics
@MrLongraphics 3 ай бұрын
I’ve also got two vehicles and have had direct TPMS sensors on my EV’s since 2014 and never had an issue. That’s on both my summer and winter wheels. I’m assuming that as the climate is similar in Canada to Norway that every car also has two sets of wheels? From a convenience and practical point of view I have had the luxury of being able to check my tire pressures from within the comfort of a heated cabin instead of having to drive to a gas station and check them outside at -32c (-25.6F). From my personal experience I’m disappointed that they’ve been removed. As for the software, I’m about to buy the top of the range Kona and it also hasn’t got the projected range guide as at 25:00 of your video. Why the difference in software? Perhaps it’s because the US and Canada vehicles are made in S Korea and the European models in the Czech Republic? Still debating whether to cancel the purchase as I’m not sure I could stand the constant sound warnings every time I’m not looking straight ahead at the road.

Just bought the new 2024 Kona EV here in Norway and picking it up next week. Part exchanged my beloved 2022 Kona because it has the smaller boot. Now for the bad news... Just found out that the European Kona won't have the TPMS display like it did on the previous models, now they will only have ABS sensors!! This will be my third Kona and I only changed my first 2019 car because it didn't have the app. Why cant the European models have the same software like the US and Canadian markets?? This is a serious setback as far as I'm concerned because with this new 2024 Kona EV I won't be able to check the tire pressures at random like I did in the past. Now it will only display a written message when the pressure is either low or high on a suspect tire. HYUNDAI you need to address this issue ASAP and have the same software around the globe via an urgent update. The new system for Europe is a step backwards and to say that I'm disappointed is an understatement!

canada has werid models. There no ultimate model in US. I ordered the 2024 kona ev limited US model. Why do some kona ev have shift stalks and some have buttons on console

The Ultimate is nearly identical to the limited. The 2023 and prior had buttons, the 2024 has the stalk. The 2024 is a completely new full redesign.

@edsgarage001 thanks for the reply! I'm curious to see if it has HUD. Sticker doesn't mention it, I've seen some videos that do and don't. I'm curious when us model will be shown.

I live in Canada... We use metric for pretty much everything. But when it comes to power from vehicles, while it would be proper to use kw and Newton meters, the general population here still uses horsepower and foot pounds. I assume you don't live in North America?

@@edsgarage001 no, I live in Europe, very informative video though! I had to look up / convert the foot pounds to Nm.

Easy to do.. but yeah we're still lagging behind a bit, likely thanks to our close proximity to the USA. 😂

The DAW (Driver Attention Warning) system is horrible, irritating and actively distracting (often when you can least afford to be distracted). And it cannot be turned off. (Yes, I have gone to the dealer and they confirmed that it cannot be turned off and that it is working as designed). On winding roads or in fog or a snow-storm, it will beep loudly at you every 4 minutes. Other than this anti-feature, it is a fantastic vehicle.

The driver attention warning system is only the system that monitors your attention level. I think you might be referring to the suite of technologies. What I mean by that is the driver attention warning system has nothing to do with windy roads or fog or snow etc. Depending on your market, most of these things can be disabled. Where do you live?

I'm in Canada - the "take a break" warning is based only off of the forward facing camera mounted near the mirror on the windscreen. It looks for where the vehicle is relative to the center of the lane (There is no interior camera in Canada) If it can't clearly and consistently see and identify the edges of the lane (fog or snow, or bumpy or poorly maintained road), or if the vehicle does not stay mostly in the center of the lane (winding road) it triggers. It cannot be disabled and it is distracting when you cannot afford to be distracted, making it dangerous.(If it had been equipped with an interior camera I would not have bought it. I have a friend in the US with such a camera and if he scratches his nose or wears sunglasses it triggers) This system is 100% defective by design.

I'm an engineer (with decades of experience in computer vision (CV), 3D gfx, and robotic control systems), and I can think of a couple of very easy to implement fixes for this problem; The MDPS system is constantly monitoring steering angle and input torque - if they are varying indicating a winding road, don't let the DAW trigger. If the forward camera detects snow or fog (Easy to do with simple CV algorithms), don't let the DAW trigger. But even easier is to just let me turn the damn thing off. My experience has been that this system (DAW) has a 100% false positive rate - which is to say a 0% accuracy rate from my perspective.

You are correct that it does use the forward facing camera for the driver attention warning system. However you're not entirely correct on how it works. The driver attention warning system is only actively recording lane position information when it can successfully see the lines on the road, IE when the Lane keep assistance is also functional. If you're driving down a winding road, and constantly inputting movement into the steering wheel, or you're on a snowy road with the lines covered up, then the system should not be warning you to take a break every 4 minutes. If it is, then something's wrong with your car. I have the identical system in my ioniq 6, and while I agree it's a little overly sensitive, and I also agree that you should be able to turn it off but can't, I've found that as long as I DRIVE the car it doesn't bother me. But if I let it constantly correct and keep me centered, and I'm occasionally being reminded to keep my hands on the wheel, then the driver attention warning system will trip fairly quickly afterwards.

@@edsgarage001 The dealer checked it out and said it's working as designed. And I'm actively paying attention. It also triggers frequently in snow or fog. It *never* triggers on a relatively straight road in clear weather.
