CAN bus system requires a 120 ohm termination at each end if the CAN bus twin wire harness to function properly. A CAN bus terminator can be used for termination of any high speed (ISO 11898-2) CAN bus system. The 120 Ohm terminating resistor is setup between pin 2 (CAN low) and pin 7 (CAN high). In general, ISO 11898-2 CAN networks must be terminated at each end using 120 Ohm terminal resistors. The map switch probably has the 120 ohm termination built into it so if no map switch is installed then it will require the plug with the resistor in it.

Thank you for the video. I was getting ready to get rid of the bike cuz it ran terrible hated it. I’m plugged the dongle. Was a completely different motorcycle. Runs like a two stroke should. Went from a two joke. To a two stoke The white throttle cam is the mild one I know this for a fact So thank you again for the vid

Had to rebuild my buddy’s map switch. He crashed and pulled out 2 of the wires directly out of the plug. Wasn’t easy,but all good and can’t even tell it ever happened!😎

Seem like it'd be easy to make a map switch. Just need a 120ohm resistor that could be disconnected by a switch. Wouldn't have the cool guy white/green lights, but it'd function the same as removing the resistor plug.

It seems like KTM is using a CAN bus switch instead of an old school on/off switch, just like in all modern cars and a lot of modern road bikes. In CAN bus systems they have to use a 120 ohm resistor to keep good communication. For these bikes, when you dont use the switch, the CAN bus from the ECU is not actually used, so it does not matter if you take it out. Unless the OBD/diagnostics computer connects to the same network, then you will not be able to scan the ECU when the map switch/120 ohm dongle is not connected. If the ECU remembers the last setting of the map switch, you can borrow a switch to put it in a different map, but then you can only change back when you connect an OEM switch again.

Same with the Beta map switches. They have 3 wires + and ground for power supply of the map switch and one signal/comunication wire between the ecu and the map switch. so the map switch can tell the ecu if the mapping needs to be changed or the TC needs to be activated and the ecu tells the map switch which mapping is activated and if TC is on or off so the right LEDs can light up on the switch. even if its not the same type of canbus as on most cars its similar.

From the 2024 KTM 300 XC-W owner manual, page 18: "If no combination switch is installed, the last selected mapping is activated. If a combination switch has never been mounted, the STANDARD mapping is activated." On the KTM webpage there is the following description regarding the 2024 XC-W maps: Map 1 is the standard, more linear, and predictable power map, while map 2 is a more aggressive map for added throttle response and more crisp, explosive power output". I was meant to receive my 2024 300 EXC last week, but due to a recall on the starter switch (if water gets inside it may power the starter continuously) I'm waiting having to wait a little longer :-(

So can you change the map with a switch from a different bike and will it stay in that map once the switch is removed? Or will it revert back to stock map once the dongle is plugged back in?

@@purajones The standard map should be stock if a map switch has never been installed. The standard map is the lower power map. This is detailed in the XC-W owners manual.

I started looking into the manual, and on page 18 / section 6.10 Combination switch It says, if a combination switch has never been mounted, the STANDARD mapping is activated. Hope this helps answer some questions.

So just to take this a touch deeper we nee you to provide the information, I have not had access to a bike. If you have the map switch on either bike and you change maps and then you kill the engine (long enough for a full power down) and you restart the bike does the bike start in the map it was shut down it? this goes back to can messages and last known mode. If it retains the last mode it was in, you can then sniff the can bus for the message (maybe not you but "you") and that message can be resent by an Arduino or other device to change maps. "send the message" again if the bike retains last "state" or "Map" I know this sounds hard but assuming it retains state you maybe able to change maps using cheap hardware from Microcenter.

Unplugged or plugged wont make a difference. It is just a terminating resistor for communication but the PV is also CAN so you could have communication errors if running without termination. The switch is expensive because it is more than just a switch.

on the 2021 Husqvarna it was just 2 wires. plugged in was one map and unplugged was the other, simple. a on off toggle switch would work. maybe that's why they went to the more complicated switch to force customers to buy their switch.

If it's just a 120Ohm dongle then you most certainly can make our own map switch using a 120Ohm resistor in series.

Right, but I meant its not like the old ones. Also another guy had a point in a comment about the Can Bus and ECU. The 120 ohms could be to keep the canbus happy and then the switch is telling the computer what to do. Not just 120 or nothing. Not sure

No toolkit on my '24 Ex350f. A throttle cam, spark plug tool, fuel filters, tank wash plugs, fork stickers, and a few bolts and grommets (for securing side panels I guess)

Has anyone been able to confirm what map the 24 300 XCW comes in and if adding a map switch actually changes anything? Ive heard people say yes and some say it doesnt.

It comes in green. And it does make a difference. Not as big as the XC.

Not sure if anyone already asked this but if you change to green map (aggressive) and change out to the more aggressive throttle cam, does it ride somewhat more like the XC? I really want the stator/lights and oil injection (for long trail/dual sport days) and coming off a 2021 TM 300 don't really want "sleepy" power

No. It’s pretty sleepy still. But if you do the TSP head and tune it wakes it up and makes the bike really good. I have a video on that too.
