The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, now in its second generation, continues to stand out in the limited market of non-luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs. Although it shares its chassis and infotainment system with the Nissan Rogue, the Outlander PHEV offers unique styling and driving dynamics. It is a seven-passenger vehicle equipped with a conventional 2.4L inline-four gasoline engine, a 20 kW lithium-ion battery, and three electric motors. The gasoline engine powers an electric generator that drives the front axle via one of the electric motors and a CVT with variable ratios. The rear axle is driven directly by another electric motor, bypassing the need for a traditional transmission. This setup results in a vehicle with respectable total horsepower and torque figures.

It doesn't have a CVT, it has a Single Speed Trans-Axle GKN Multi Mode E-Transmission.

Had one since last July. Pros: Great power and AWD system, nice interior, quiet interior with good features like heads up display, heat pump, seat fold down levers in the back, heated seats for four passengers, memory seat for passenger, and auto wipers/headlights. Cons: No room for a spare, 3rd row seat is pretty much only for kids-I wish I could remove it, steering is far too light, some issues with the mirrors not folding back or getting stuck (a known manufacturer issue). Bose speakers sound nice, but are very weak in the back seat. Occasionally have issues with the volume not working and having to reboot the console. Overall however this has been a great vehicle. Been getting almost 60 MPG for an AWD SUV which is hard to beat. $7500 off lease bonus also helps a ton. A great value for the price.

I read another review somewhere where the owner had the dealer remove the 3rd row seating before they took delivery of the vehicle. So, apparently it can be done. I guess having it done after you have taken delivery would cost you though. I wish Mitsubishi had made the third row seating an optional extra on all levels of the Outlander PHEV.

Sorry but incorrect has a CVT. Uses the GKN multi mode single speed transmission. We have the 2023 SEL Premium. Excellent car. Most of our daily driving is within the EV range. Does not have an RPM tachometer. Instead shows kw demand

I don’t agree with EPA comments I always gets an average range of 80 kilometers on ev power and consume 7 liters per 100 km on gasoline. Unlike typical PHEVs, this vehicle primarily functions as an electric car, consistently charging the battery regardless of the driving models & power and tarmac mode is one of the fun to drive modes i!

I’m seriously considering this vehicle. Do u have any starting issues on cold days? Also, what mode is most efficient when driving?

@@carenthusiast4984 had my 2023 SE for 2 months-- on full charge in EV mode only - I am getting average 42miles per charge in SF bay area-- 14 mile round trip commute with 5 miles of freeway usually driven at 65+ and city streets +/ speed limit--- though past 3 days I did try driving conservatively ie freeway of 60 to 65mph and sticking to street limit - got 57miles + 3 miles left on the guessometer today-- per mitsubishi app

Sorry @CarGurus but there is no CVT transmission on this vehicle, I don't know how you found one.

Also, as someone else pointed out, at about 9:45, you state that the engine is revving at 4,000 rpm when it is charging the battery. That thing on the display is NOT a tachometer. The engine is NOT spinning at 4,000 rpm. It's running at whatever speed is the most efficient for charging battery at that time. Or, if you are accelerating heavily at the time, the ICE will be running at whatever speed it needs to while it is still connected to the front axle, via the single speed transmission. So, there could be times when it might be running at 4,000 rpm, but I expect that would be a speed of around 130 km/hr, or thereabouts.
@Pdougie2
@Pdougie2 2 ай бұрын
At about 3:30, you talk about explaining to people that this is NOT an EV. But at speeds below 70 km/hr, with a charged battery, it IS an EV, with an on-board charger.

4k is kw production during charge mode. Engine doesnt run at 4k rpm. Charge more still gave me 26 28 mpg on long drive. I charged and used the batttery and repeated the cycle and received 38mpg overall.

What is Mitsubishi doing to fix the impact of cold weather causing the car to not work?
@Pdougie2
@Pdougie2 2 ай бұрын
At about 8:35 you state that you cannot do one pedal driving in most PHEV's, but you can in the Outlander PHEV. That is because, contrary to one of your earlier statements, the Outlander PHEV is an EV at speeds below 70 km/hr, when it is driving as a pure EV, except that it has an on board battery charger.

What is with no start cold battery at -20c. Did they fix the battery preheat for cold climate? Should we wait until a solution like a true battery heater comes back?

The point is that it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING EVEN APPROACHING ANYTHING LIKE A CVT. It has a single speed gearbox that engages only with the front axle at speeds above 70 km/hr. At speeds below 70 km/hr the Outlander PHEV is an EV, with an onboard generator driven by the ICE. At speeds above 70 km/hr, the ICE can engage with the front axle, to provide additional torque and power for overtaking and climbing steep hills.

No, it has TWO electric motors - 1 in the front and 1 in the rear. No, only the gas version has a CVT - the PHEV has a single speed transaxle. Only engages above 70 kph. If you can't get basic facts right, don't pretend to inform us about cars.

You talk as though you have such a great understanding of how the Outlander PHEV drivetrain works, but you clearly don't have a clue. I have seen other info on using the "CHARGE" drive mode, which suggests that alternating between CHARGE and EV on longer road trips can actually result in the best fuel efficiency figures.

Picked up my 2024 Outlander PHEV- GT on April 08, 2024 with 11 kms on the Odometer. Great vehicle and I have been averaging 85 to 90 kms on EV mode after charging. I was very impressed until I got the message. Engine On to burn old Fuel. Engine will not stop until at least 20 liters is added. I only had the car for 5 weeks and full tank of fuel. I have been forced to run my vehicle at 100% ICE. WTF!!!!. Unable to use EV Mode, there goes the reason for buying a Plug-in Hybrid as I drive 90% in the city. My 2018 or my previous 2022 Outlander PHEV never did this. I could always use EV Mode after a bit of a warm up, or turning off the engine and start again in EV Mode. This was a very bad idea by Mitsubishi. Yes, I know, old fuel Bad. But 5 weeks old with 11kms on tge Odometer? I am not impressed.

I wonder how long the gas was in the engine before you bought it. It's supposed to give you that notification after 3 months I believe of old gas to burn it off before it goes stale.

@@mikeintampa250 I am not certain. The Computer just cleared the Message on Apr 19, 2024. I will be monitoring it from now on. With my 2018 and 2022, I used to drive 4 to 6 months in the warmer temps of May to Sept without ever seeing this message. Now and then when I started car, the Engine did start and run for about 3 minutes, then revert back to EV Mode. Never, ever, have I ever seen the Message "Depletting Old Fuel. Engine will not stop until 20 lit or more is added" before. Never.
