On the heels of our Bent 100 On Snow Review last week, we thought we'd do another, this time taking a second look at the Nordica Unleashed 98. Back again for 2024 with a new graphic, this ski strikes a nice balance between precision, power, playfulness, and versatility.

We were talking about that yesterday--we like them too! The nice thing about these is that, opposed to the longer-form reviews, all of the footage is from the day that it's released. When we do the longer ones, there's potential for months-old footage, which is fine, but we found that these on-snow formats elicit true and real-time reactions.

Not as fun or bouncy as my 184cm Head Oblivion 94's, but where the Oblivion are like a 7-10 for skill level the Unleashed 98mm in 186cm are more like a 2-8 for skill and power. You really have to trounce on the Oblivions and they are heavy / ride like a Head racing ski, even though still very good on jumps. Oblivions never vibrate or chatter at speed either. But the Unleashed is like a shotgun that does everything without a lot of effort. Very relaxing and enjoyable and super surf-like. So easy to turn, where as the Oblivion will put you in the ditch or a tree if you sneeze or blink at high speeds. So, i ride the Oblivions on my first ski day and then, if they didn't manage to make me rip every muscle in my body, then i will either snowboard or ride the Unleashed on the second day. If the Oblivions came in a longer 187cm size (i'm 5'11" and weigh 220lbs), as well as making them lighter, then i would just use the machine-gun level feeling of the Oblivions forever (and count the risk of injury or death worth it). However, if i had to choose only one ski forever, then i would definitely ride the Unleashed since it is just so easy and fun and relaxing and feel good! If they just changed the 2mm camber underfoot to something realistic like about 6mm, then it would take years for anyone to beat them. I've always wanted 3DO reactive padding put under a removable Ti top-plate so a skier could decide to make their ski stiffer or softer based on which top-plate sheet of metal is screwed on. I can honestly say that until this ski came out i've always been suffering and always disappointed in every ski i've owned. Finally, this Unleashed comes as close to perfect skiing as it gets! Very light and it makes crud feel like powder even! Can't imagine trying a wider Unleashed out, but Tim at SkiBoot Rx here in Billings loves both the 98 and the 108 Unleashed - so maybe someday i will buy a 108 Unleashed as well. Note: (1) i have / will only ever ride demo bindings so i can move forward on hardpack and back on powder days and still mount them 3 to 5cm back of center (2) i will now only ever ride on Tyrolia Protector demo bindings to prevent a knee injury (am praying they make a touring model of the Protector MTN binding soon). (3) i hate flat tails and have only demoed or owned about 12 different skis, so these guys are more knowledgeable and experience by far than i am. Best reviewers of skis out there!

The Unleashed is a stronger and better carver, but is not quite as playful or floaty. You can definitely feel the metal in the Nordica in terms of stiffness and energy. I think the longer rocker profile and shorter turn radius of the QST separates it from the other, especially in terms of playfulness, maneuverability, and flotation--three areas in which the QST is a better option.

Hi team. Loved this video! Can't decide between these and the Dynastar M-Free 99s as my daily driver. Looking for maximum versatility. i have demoed the M-Frees and love them but wonder how they compare to the Unleashed 98s? Thanks again
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
The Unleashed has more raw power and grip. I love the stability and energy of the Unleashed, and while the M-Free is great, it's not quite as strong or sturdy. In the trees or bumps, the Dynastar is more fun and playful while the Unleashed is more precise.

Great review guys! I’m a progressing intermediate looking to buy my first skis. Will be skiing out west. Looking forward to improving my carving but also venturing off piste. I feel like lots of the skis in the all mountain 98-104 category are geared toward advanced/expert skiers, which doesn’t describe me and I don’t want something too unforgiving, but would also like something I’d be happy with for a while as I improve. Would this be one to consider?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Tyler! There are some great, lighter, and more approachable options in this class of skis for sure. If you're able to dial it back to the mid-90's underfoot, there's even a whole lot more. I think something like the Elan Ripstick 96, Volkl Blaze 94, and for 2024, the K2 Mindbender 96C all are great options. These are all light, easy to maneuver, and yet still have pretty high performance ceilings. I'd say the Unleashed with its metal laminate can be on the more demanding side for someone with your stats and application. I'd stick to something without metal for approachability and accessibility. Have fun! SE

Hello! You do a great job! Thank you! I'm between Unleashed 98 and Head kore x 90 and can't decide. I'm an intermediate to advance skier, love to ski on and off piste, never tryed the park but never say never, 90 kg, 180 cm. Can you recomand which one should I chose? The 168 or 174 unleashed or the 170 head kore x 90? If it's gonna be the unleashed can I put the marker squre 11? Now I ski the old k2 photon (10 years old or more) so i'm looking for long therm skis. Thank you for your answer!

I have been trying to decide between the unleashed 98 and the rustler 100. I am a pretty aggressive west coast skier who likes to go fast and rip groomers, but I also spend time off piste and love side hits and will take a few park laps on a normal day. Which ski do you think suits me better. I am open to any other recommendations for skis as well.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
The 2024 Rustler 10 gets a bit closer to the Unleashed in terms of dampness and stability, mainly because they both contain tip to tail metal. The fact that the Unleashed's metal is found in the center of the ski rather than on the sides makes it more damp throughout the turn while the Rustler is slightly more precise. The Rustler is definitely a better floater, given the extra width as well as the longer rocker profile. That said, if you're interested in groomers and park, the Unleashed is one of the best of the bunch. I'm also a huge fan of Black Crows Justis in this ~100 mm category with partial metal. Nice long tail rocker in that ski helps with softer snow, and while not quite as park-oriented as the Nordica, most directional jumps will be fine.

Nice review! I would like to know how would they compare to the Elan Ripstick 96 Black?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
The Unleashed makes very clean, smooth, and round turns. The Elan is slightly more fall-line oriented in that the flatter tail likes to cut a straighter line down the hill. The shovel of the Ripstick is considerably lighter and more floaty than that of the Unleashed, so when you get into softer snow, the Elan is going to stay on top pretty well. Performance-wise, they're both right about the same level, the twin-tipped shape is the biggest difference, allowing for more freestyle personality and multi-directional skiing in the Unleashed.

Hey guys, great review! I'm looking to replace my Soul Rider 97s with the Unleashed 98s, but unsure which length to go for. I'm 183cm / 90kg, and normally lapping groomers or backcountry. My Soul Riders always felt on the short side at 177, especially given I very rarely ski park. Is the 186 too bigger jump, or will the 180s still feel a little short? Thanks

Hey guys I am an intermediate advanced skier, and finding my way in the park on jumps and pipe/rails I currently have faction prodigy 3s at 178 (im about 174cm , 160pounds). Theyre fun and poppy, love em for jumping off bumpe and side hits, not bad in the park. Unreal in pow. However pow days arent too common for me and im not sure if its the fact they are taller than me a few cm or the 106 width but i have a tough time with them in moguls or trees when there isnt soft snow. I'm looking for another ski to either replace these or have as a second set for those non pow days where i usually just hit the groomer or trees on the way to the park. Looking for smething lighter and more manueverable than my factions that can be good in the park, but not specific park enough that they cant handle some crud or ice. These look like a great option, was also exploring the arv 96, volkll revollt 95, and faction ct 2.0, blackops 98, and unleashed 90 (not sure how different it is from 98) Any recommendations for a lighter park friendly ski on non power days that can handle the variabme conditions??? Would this one be it? Thank u!
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 3 ай бұрын
Firstly, the 90 is quite a bit different than the 98, despite what Nordica's site says--the 90 is just a wood core, and it works great, but not for what you're looking to do. Between the other skis on the list, the Unleashed 98 is probably the most well rounded and high performing here, with the Blackops 98 being right on the heels. The Revolt and the ARV are more flexible, and the Faction is more symmetrical than you may be looking for. I do think that if you're bringing in park skiing to the mix, the non-metal Blackops makes a bit more sense than the Unleashed 98.

The Stance is a bit more sturdy of a ski with cleaner turning capabilities, but it's not quite as playful as this Unleashed. For the fun-factor involved, the Unleashed is a very capable on-piste ski.

The K2 is another ski kind of like the Stance which has a sturdy, stable, and stout feel to it. It's a fantastically smooth feel to it, and that's awesome from an on-piste perspective, but lacks the ultimate versatility of the Nordica.

You mention this ski being a great carver but at the expense of being a bit of a handful in the bumps. How does that tradeoff compare to skis like an atomic maverick 95 or stance 96? I'm trying to find a great carver that can finish a turn that can still handle bumps without sending you to the chiropractor. Other options to consider?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
I personally really like the Stance 96 in the bumps. I find it a great blend of sturdiness and playfulness. Maverick feels too stiff for bumps, and while I appreciate the lighter weight, for me, the balance of weight and power of the Stance makes sense.

Do you think these would work as a 60/40 resort/ touring 1-ski quiver? I'm a strong intermediate who splits resort time between the trees/bumps and in the park, but also dabbles in touring decently often. Got some Duke PT 16's I could put on 'em.

Great review. And, how does it compare to the Black Opps 98?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
The most significant difference is in the on-trail and carving performance. We found the Unleashed to have more capabilities in this realm due to the metal and camber. The Black Ops has more of a quiet feel to it--it's not nearly as precise, but that could be a benefit to a skier looking for something more smeary and playful.
@AWSsk8r
@AWSsk8r 3 ай бұрын
Could you guys comment on these vs the current Rustler 9, Bent 100 and Black Ops? Currently on a 177 Mantra M5, which I love and is a great size in that ski, but I'd like something that is a little easier in tight spots, is more engaging skiing with kids/wife at lower speeds, and is a little more playful and a little more off piste focused. I want to be able to ski a little switch and do 180s off side hits (which I do on the Mantra but I have to be careful) a bit more easily but I'm not a huge park skier (no rails, occasional jumps and 360). Basically, a ski that still has some amount of top end, and is directional, but not AS directional as the Mantras and is more suited to exploring more off piste. Mostly ski PNW and Rockies, with some Midwest (Ohio) thrown in. I ski everything in front of me. Bowls, chutes, trees, groomers, bumps, you name it. I'm 6'0" and 185 lbs for reference.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 3 ай бұрын
I think if you're incorporating freestyle or creativity to the mix, and still want more top end, the Blackops 98 makes a lot of sense. While I don't think they're as carvy as the Unleashed, there is some more playfulness. I like the silence and stability of the Rossignol a whole lot, and when you factor in the twin tip freestyle capabilities, it sounds like what you're looking for. 182.

i like the chairlift talk.. .i did not know that there is a sheet of metal in those skis.. how would you compare these skis to the 104 free? something i have noticed with skiing my 104 free is that when i hit a bump it goes straight to my back.. they also wear me out.. i am going to ski my dps foundation to see if they absorb bumps better.. i am talking about bumps on groomers..
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
It's not a full sheet, it's a terrain-specific sheet similar to what we see in Nordica's Santa Ana skis. Basically, all the Santa Ana skis have the same width sheet of metal, but the wider the ski goes, the less the metal extends to the edges. In the narrower versions, like the 88, the metal is nearly full-width for most of the ski's side. The 104 Free is still considerably more damp and stable, given that it has nearly twice the metal of the Unleashed. There's more rocker in the 104 Free and more camber in the Unleashed, giving the Unleashed a distinctly longer effective edge which mainly works great for more groomed turns as well as having more of a true twin tip for freestyle-oriented skiing.
@darinsmith2458
@darinsmith2458 Жыл бұрын
@@SkiEssentials thank you.. it makes me think of my Foundation 100 RP.. that has the shortest effective edge and no metal and you would think that it would not be stable... i had one time i was on that ski and i did 76.8 mph.. i think the closest i did with any other ski (including my stormrider 88s) was 55 mph.. and i have many times that my top speed is around 45 mph...

What’s the more versatile ski that does it all, the Elan Rip Stick 98 or the or the Nordica Unleashed 98? I weigh 67 kilos and my height is 165 cm . I’m looking to purchase a 98mm underfoot one quiver ski. If you think any other ski would also work that would be great to hear about them. I really like to ski the trees and off piste as much as possible but will ski the groomers at different times. I own a pair Kastle TX 98 skis which l use for backcountry ski touring but would like to buy an all mountain ski for general resort skiing. I intend to mount the Salomon MN Shift binding on the skis l purchase so they are able to be used to ski both on the resort and off piste at times. Really appreciate your assistance. 😊
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 4 ай бұрын
The weight is the bigger difference here, as the Ripstick comes in lower than the Unleashed. This makes it quicker and more mobile, as well as being more amenable to uphill travel. I'd say that despite the higher level of stability and carving power that the Unleashed delivers, the Ripstick sounds more like your ski.

As between the Unleashed 98 and the new Rustler 9, might you characterize one ski as having more of a “light on your feet” and playful feeling? I’m 6’, 175-180 lbs., so most likely going with the 180 cm either way. And as between the two, any advantage of one over the other in the bumps? Thanks -
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
Alright, so, great question, and I imagine there will be a lot of people looking at both. In my opinion, while it might be surprising, I actually think the Rustler has more of that "light on your feet" feel, but less because it's physically a different weight and more due to the shape. The increase in early taper in the Rustler gives it a little bit more agility in most situations, where the Unleashed is more locked in. It's an interesting difference. The Unleashed is more responsive and precise, which makes sense considering its park performance or intended park use. The Rustler feels a bit looser, which I actually think helps in the bumps a bit too. Certainly don't want to take anything away from the Unleashed 98, quite the contrary, as if I (Jeff) were choosing between them, I would almost definitely take Unleashed as it matches how I ski better than Rustler, but I do think there are some interesting differences there.

How does the unleashed 98 compare to the 2024 rustler 10?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
It's a pretty darn good comparison--the Rustler 10 has longer rocker and a wider footprint so it will be a better pure floater, especially in deeper snow and with a more playful personality. The Unleashed feels smoother on smoother surfaces, and has more of that freestyle background for park and natural hits.

Guys please can you say a few words how this skies are comparing to the Faction Prodigy 3.0, K2 Poacher, Blizzard Rustler 9. I can't demo any of these skies, but I own Prodigy 3.0 and want to buy one more pair of skies (K2 Poacher, Unleashed 98, Blizzard Rustler 9). An I don't know which are best options for me. I like jumps, tricks, but outside park.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
I think the Poacher has the most in-park capabilities, with the Unleashed behind and the Rustler last. I think that kind of takes the Poacher off of your list in that regard. Between Unleashed and Rustler, the Unleashed feels like a more versatile, all-around option that includes natural freestyle activities. The Rustler leans more towards directional all-mountain skiing, and in that realm, it's a very accomplished ski, but nearly everyone that gets on the Unleashed 98 has the same overwhelming positive experience.
