Nike owns the Kenyan distance running determinations for Olympic and World Championships teams. The reason their trials are at the Prefontaine Classic because Portland is the home of Nike. Nike gives over a million dollars a year to the Keynan government to support track and cross country development programs. In return Kenya always holds open a third individual to be determined not by their trials but by their Athletic Authority. At least 10 times since 2016 Nike sponsored athletes were chosen over other athletes sponsored by Adidas, New Balance and other companies. Most of these are egregious selections over athletes that were much superior beating the chosen Nike athlete with way better times in their respective events. That is why the Keynan man finishing 3rd by 3/4th of a second in a top 5 time in the world this year did not automatically selected. The same is true with the third placed Keynan woman in a World Record 10K.
@leomurillo2478
@leomurillo2478 22 күн бұрын
Very disturbing. This is what is called an "athletic monopoly" in Kenya. Where the athlete is fully controlled by the shoe company (Nike) and with full approval of the government (they get the money) so the other athlete (for other shoe companies-Adidas, New Balance) still will be out of the championship level (Olympics, world championship etc.) competitions and has no recourse to sue either the shoe company (Nike) and/or the Kenyan government. There is no chance of having an anti-trust suit against them. Practically Nike and the Kenyan government have surreptitiously "unionized" athletics in Kenya. They are the athletic mobsters, the mafia, the Cosa Nostra of running in Kenya. What a travesty.

And that's why you see alot of guys prefer road racing....go out there you know you good and win road races and put your name on the map...when you running leading times they have nothing to say to you....They had tried to keep the late wanjiru out of team...he run around winning 4 marathons with top times and they had no choice but to put him in, i think wanjru was an addidas athlete...though he started under Japanese sponsored company mizuko or something...and olympics proved he was the best athlete out there on the roads...he won first marathon for kenya in Beijing...which is crazy with so many great athletes at times i feel like we have not been sending the best athletes..

@@nativeson1559 That is BS. They could have held their trials in Africa or any Diamond League event. They did it at the Prefontaine Classic because Nike is headquartered in Portland. This has been going on for years and is well documented

When the runners started passing the second pacer (Knevelbaard) he should have step off the track right rather than force runners to go around him. He had plenty of room to do that going into the first turn after they started passing (at 13:37 into the video and 10:15 into the race) and sufficient room the straightaway before that, but elected to continue for another lap. Blocking is the cardinal sin for a pacer. He led for less than 1.5 laps, kind of pathetic. I think they told him they needed 64s per lap and he was at 64.5 his first lap leading. You can see them asking him to get out the way but he hand gestures back as if he's saying he can't, but there was room for him to. The first guy (AJ Ernst) did fine for 8 laps.

@@wesleyrotich8326 do a little reading. Look into the dozens of "above average" who have been suspended for cheating/doping since 2023 - DOZENS of of Africa's best.

Incredibly corrupt. What about all the athletes who couldn’t secure a visa or afford to travel to Oregon.

You think the guys who were left out were going to run a sub 26:50? Do you really think so? Anyone who is someone was in this race. YEs, a few missed visas but that is something we can do without . Just get serious for a start. I also believe that by your reasoning, there are women crying because they couldn't get visas to come qualify for the Olympics in the 10,000m. LEt me tell you what happened because you DON'T seem to know. There results are as follows. 1. Beatrice Chebet - 28.15.14. WR (World Record). 2. Gudaf Tsegay (Ethiopia) 29.05.92 PB (Personal Best) 3. Lilian Kasait Rengeruk 29:26.89 PB 4. Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi 29.27.59 (PB). NOw, these three girls (Kenyans) are the ones who've been running for KEnya. They swept the world Cross country this year (1-2-3-4-5-) with Chebet being first, Rengeruk second and Chelimo third- IN THE SAME ORDER! The trials had been held in Kenya. One runner who broke the women's road 10k, AGnes Ng'etich, was fifth and Anyango (who was second to her) fourth in the 1-2-3-4-5 sweep in Belgrade. Do you really think we left out people who'd have beaten these ladies? Come on man!
