Agree with you 100% Josh. Between the turbo lag, harshness of the hybrid CVT, and poor choice of interior materials, this is not the same old RX we all knew from Lexus. There is no luxury or refinement here. Same issues are even more pronounced in the TX. Lexus cut a lot of costs, but raised prices and needs calling out. Not enough KZfaqr car reviewers are holding Lexus/Toyota to task. Appreciate what you posted.

Thank you for watching! And regarding the TX, that was exactly what I was just thinking-that if this engine is just enough for the RX, I wouldn’t want to drive it in the bigger, heavier TX. And I completely agree at the lack of luxury and refinement and that it’s not the same RX we have always known!

@@joshjamescars Appreciate your honest review and agree completely w/ your assessment. My parents owned several lexus and had an RX for 11 yrs. But the recent RX felt cheap, underpowered, loud and overpriced. My dad ended up getting a cadillac lyriq. software issues aside, the lyriq was much cheaper (after incentives), much quieter, much more powerful, rode much softer, etc.

What kind of issues is the TX having? I wouldn't want the base turbo engine in that vehicle but was thinking about a 500h or even the 550h+.

@@fossilmaker5745 The 500h is the Hybrid Max using 6-speed. There have been transmission failures. Not sure if the problems have been resolved as of March 2024. The 550h+ is the V6 hybrid that was on previous gen RXLh, but harder to find.

Awesome review Josh! 100% agree with you! I still have the 2020 RX350, the V6 and 8 speed are so refined and smooth. I also prefer the 2020 interior than the new generation. I remember watching Lexus Cambridge manufacture video, the person speaks how they choose one piece of wood for one RX car to keep the wood grain and patent match, that kind of luxury or refinement is gone! I feel Lexus cuts so much corners just to make more cheaper cars, raises price at the same time😂 I really appreciate your video!

Hello! I LOVED the outgoing RX like yours and actually I have loved every single RX up until this new generation which is why I think these new ones make me so sad because it was always a car that felt so special even though it was a mass market, high volume vehicle. As you say, Lexus always paid such attention or the details of the wood grain and the RX always has unique button banks and specially crafted interior trim. These new RXs feel very mass produced without that care and attention to detail. At a higher price no less! Thank you for coming back and watching!!

Hi Josh 👋 I really enjoy your videos. I’m glad you mentioned smaller wheels / bigger tires! As much as I like the appearance of large wheels, low profile tires aren’t as comfortable on the road. But if I want a higher trim vehicle because I want say, HUD & 360 camera, the wheels also get bigger and voila…low or lower profile tires. I’m going to jump over to Mazda CX-5 as an example. I really like their top signature trim. But if I want the gorgeous midnight blue exterior paint with white interior, I think you get 17” wheels but I can’t get other bells & whistles 😅
@Wasabi9111
@Wasabi9111 2 ай бұрын
totally agree. I much prefer smaller wheels with better ride and pothole protection. Depending on the car, you could probably get the smaller wheels used for not much money. Or ppl would be willing to swap / trade up for the larger wheels. I have done that a couple times as I also like the feature content of the higher trim, just not the bigger wheels.

Hello to both of you! I completely agree about taller profile tires and smaller wheels giving you a better ride. I think that’s why my GX rides so well too. Thanks for your review! I got to try the RX500h F-sport handling package today as a loaner while my 2021 RX F-sport was getting maintenance. I really liked the suspension and handling. It isn’t as floaty as both my 2016 and 2021 models. Didn’t like the weird interior door handles and way too complicated transmission shifter. I would probably get used to it. Also the large front brake calipers should be painted something other than black. I also agree the interior quality isn’t up to older Lexus standards.

Yes! I definitely agree about the handling and suspension. I still don’t care for the Hybrid Max/500h powertrain, though. I think the V6 like what’s in your 2016 and 2021 is both more refined and smooth but also has a more linear and solid pull to it. And yes at the interior! Especially in the 500h which is a $70k car I expect way more than what you get.

Hi Josh, you did a fantastic job doing this review. I’m subscribing now. I have had Lexus vehicles since my 1997 ES 350. It was totaled by another driver running a stop sign with 187k or I would still have it today. I now have a 2010 ES with 73k and my wife has a 2016 RX 350 with 53k and the safety+ options. Love these cars! We will keep them for a long time especially since what Lexus is doing now. Very much let down by Lexus. I plan on keeping the two Lexus’s that we have now like I said and buying a 2020-2022 RX as well. Or, an Acura MDX. We have had two Acuras in the past and liked them too. What is your opinion? Buy the 2020-2022 RX or the MDX? Thanks much!

Hello! And thank you so much for the kind words! I would absolutely keep the vehicles you have now, those are both terrific! Between the two you list there I think it would depend on whether buying new is important or not. If so, obviously go with the MDX. But if not, I love the last generation RX. Another thing to consider is, if you like your ES this is probably the last year to get a V6 ES and you can get a fully loaded Ultra Luxury trim for the same price as a low-trim MDX.

Hi Josh, love your videos. I have a 350h and with the instant response of the electric motor , I find it's plenty for me. (Electric motor instant assist vs turbo lag you mentioned.) When I bought my car in early 2023, the 350h and 350 were the same price and mostly @ MSRP. With that and the 1/3 better MPG I would still go with the 350h a year ago. Fast forward to 2024 and you will find much better deals on the 350 gas only, up to 8-10% off MSRP so that voids the gas savings of the 350h. I wanted the smaller 19" wheels but found it impossible to find a premium plus model that had them. I think the 21's are more attractive but agree the 19's would probably ride softer.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 2 ай бұрын
Hi Jim! I think the 350h is a great choice for anyone who has efficiency as their top priority! And like you say, the instant electric assist is MUCH more enjoyable than the lag from this turbo/8-speed setup in city driving. And that’s very interesting to hear about the street prices of the hybrid versus the turbo. I think both are still very popular in my market so I haven’t seen the discounts you’re seeing but I’m glad to hear that discounts are coming back! As others have said, if you do end up wanting the smaller wheels you can find them readily available on eBay as new car takeoffs that you could then swap onto your car. Cheers!

Another great video Josh, as always thank you for your in-depth and insightful review of the new 23/24' RX350. Unfortunately it seems right now in this current time everything is becoming LESS for $ MORE $ . I did have a loaner 23' RX and while it was nice , I was not taken away by it. I as well felt the punchy and louder notes of the 4 cylinder and I thought the push button doors are gimmicky, however when I did not push the new style RX, it was alright. Currently i own a 2022 RX and I am extremely thankful and happy with it, to the point where if someone said I'll give you an even swap for the NEW RX , I would politely turn it down and remain with the 22'. I was really unimpressed with the 4 cyclinder (I was curios since I switched my lease from a 2018 RX350 to the es250 awd) The 4 cyclinder is super slow...I had to change my driving style and think ahead before overtaking, unlike the rx350 with the V6. I am coming to the conclusion to just buy a used 2022 used rx350 with the V6 instead of buing the new rx350 with the 4 cyclinder. Its a shame...I was always a fan of the RX350 but the 4 cyclinder is making me pause where I should go now???

I think the 2022 RX is absolutely one to get if you can find a good, low mileage CPO (always have it inspected by a third party mechanic too, even if it’s CPO). Or, if you want to go new, the Acura MDX still has a V6, is VERY nice to drive, and I think looks MUCH better than the RX. The Infiniti QX60 would also be an option. Nissan’s VQ-series V6 is a proven motor just like Toyota’s GR-series V6 and and now that the QX60 has a proper 9 speed auto and not a CVT, I think that’s a really compelling package. The interior looks great too.

Hey Josh - I drove a 2024 RX350h from dealer. Just curious. Very quiet and smooth at 70 km/hr. But the new Mazda products are just as quiet and smooth. What is your opinion of Mazda3 2019 + and CX-30/CX-5? CX-5 has acoustic windshield and double pane front doors so it's as good as Lexus for half the cost (GX AWD is $34k CAD vs $64k CAD b4 taxes)
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 14 күн бұрын
I like Mazda but their reliability is hit or miss depending on model. CX-5 is solid because it’s been around so long but CX-50 and CX-90 are having issues since they’re so new. Also, Mazda resale isn’t as good as Toyota so you pay more over the long term simply because of depreciation. On the plus side, Mazda’s ride and handling is usually the best in class which Mazda buyers think is worth the trade off in resale. Personally their cars don’t really interest me but I’m not their target demographic. :)

I haven't driven the new turbo i4, but if there's 1-2 second delay that's really big, because when you need the power to avoid an accident - you usually can't wait 1-2 seconds for that it. I have thought about going back getting an older 450h (i believe that's the v6 hybrid), we have one with just the V6 and highlander with the old 3.3L V6 and hybrid and it feels way more nicer to drive with such smooth power delivery the engine never revs up. Not long ago someone just drove one over 1 million miles on the original drivetrain - likely because how easy the engine is worked with the electric assist and the PSD on that gen atleast is more reliable than the 5 and 6 speeds as well as extremely easy to change the fluid correctly without issue.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 2 ай бұрын
Yep! It’s a combination of the transmission fighting you to stay in top gear and the turbo lag/logic that creates that but it’s a noticeable delay. And yes, if you want a newer RX, I would absolutely go with a CPO 2022 RX450h.

I had a 2023 RX350 and sold it for a 23 GX. There's a lot of cost cutting on the new RX. A lot people praise the new interior but it's only surface level first glance. Door handle area has hard touch plastic and then cheap rubbery material on inside. The previous gen much more unique center console, with real buttons and the analog clock. They saved a lot of money by tacking on the giant screen, no craftsmanship necessary. The turbo engine is responsive but I'd rather have the V6. The GX is also noticeably better made with no rattles even though it's much larger, it's built super solid. Below 65, I actually think my GX is quieter.

Agree on your assessment Josh. In the end it’s asking a four cylinder to perform (or outperform) what a six cylinder engine can do. We used to have a 2001 C200 Kompressor and while that was a fun engine for a four pot, fuel mileage wasn’t all that great. Switching later on to the same model car, C240 with the V6 engine made a world of difference. Same output on bhp and torque but the feel was much smoother and effortless, definitely got lower fuel mileage considering it had a bigger displacement. I agree on the cost cutting too. That’s unacceptable from Lexus. Is the new 350 more expensive than the previous V6 350?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 2 ай бұрын
Yes! Exactly to all of this. Although I honestly don’t think the mileage is that much better than the V6 it used to have especially since the engine has to work way harder like you say. And yes, it’s considerably more expensive than the last generation with the V6.

Turbo 4s can be very fun. I love them in BMWs. So how bad could they be in a Toyota product? I’d probably opt for the electrified turbo. Fuel economy isn’t great in the 350. And with that 500h you can fill power gap caused by the turbo lag and it’s zippy! I can also promise you too that the wood is real. Just highly laminated.

The 500h is better for sure but if my money were on the line, at $72K MSRP, I’m passing on that and buying an actual luxury car. Based on the issues that you have pointed out, this is not a car that I would be interested in. The added electric motors in the 500h, I believe, eliminate the turbo lag by providing instant torque. Not sure if the rod=ad noise will be better in the 500h. Top spec for the 500h here in Canada is $91,000 CDN which is really up there.

Take the 500h for a test drive before you commit to anything. Some folks feel like that powertrain needs some work. I don’t mind it, personally, but as you say, it’s really up there in price and will still have the low-rent interior. I think a fully loaded 500h here is $72K USD and that’s a fully loaded QX60 Autograph (which are usually discounted) or an MDX Type-S both of which have V6s, nicer interiors, and are way better to drive.

Actually that’s not necessarily true. They did the same thing with the old cars. The 2GR V6 got dropped into everything including the Tacoma and Rav4, and at one point the same way the T25A is getting dropped into everything now. It’s just that, to your point, the engines that they have available to drop into their cars today are more efficient and less enjoyable than the old ones were. And there are pros and cons to each. I love my tank like GX but I also love my RAV4 Prime for all it does really well. Just depends on what one cares about.

Okay I see your point now, thanks for that. Pivoting from this point, however, isn’t it fair to think that aligning new engines to new standards will compromise durability and maintenance costs? Maybe not from a parts and service perspective, but from people wanting to hit the pedal and get the same feeling they got from their v6 RX (aside from the sound of course). I love your channel by the way, and your videos have helped shape my 23 yr old head into appreciating cars most people my age don’t. With your knowledge, I believe you would have a valuable opinion on other brands. Can’t wait till you upload again.

I agree with your points but would still go with the 350h because gas is expensive as hell here in California. I know this is controversial but I want a 350h version of lexus TX so we arent forced to buy a grand highlander hybrid limited. 80K is a bit out of our budget but we want something comfortable and efficient in the 60k ish range.

Hey there! Personally having seen and driven both of them there isn’t a huge difference between the TX and Grand Highlander (in fact many parts are identical). Plus, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max tops out at $59K and that’s the one I would buy hands down. Also, I know most people don’t love minivans, but the Sienna is basically a Grand Highlander/TX with the basic 350h drivetrain. And it’s not a joy to drive, especially loaded up LOL.

Why not get one of the last 2023 GX460s on the market now? Buy it brand new and keep it for another 20-25 years like your Land Cruiser. My local dealers don’t have any left but I saw 15-20 of them still available at Westside Lexus in Houston. I have a great contact there if you’re interested.

@joshjamescars

Of the three, I wouldn’t even consider the RX350 or CX90 and would happily take the MDX all day long. The RX with this drivetrain and this interior is a non-starter for me and the CX90 has had A TON of issues from engine to transmission to electrical on both the I6 and the PHEV. Not super surprising considering the entire car is new from the ground up, but not something I’d sink my own money into for another few years at least. The MDX, on the other hand, is solid Honda quality and lovely Honda V6. Plus I happen to think it looks GREAT, especially when compared to the RX with its unattractive face and unfortunate proportions.

With the ES that's why went with the brown interior - similar to color used in BMWs - and actual wood colored trim because the only other option is white or a sea of black, which looks like a cheap economy car.

@@joshjamescars oh?! Here in Sweden Lexus cars get warranty coverage for 10 years or 200000 km, whichever comes first. This applies to used cars too, as long as they’ve been serviced exclusively by Lexus. So you can get a 2020 model today that would effectively have six years of extended warranty left as few cars from that time have travelled very far due to the pandemic. You can get really good deals if you buy to keep and own.

This is very common of cars with electronic gear shifters like the RX. Most are going that way since joystick or button gear shifters don’t need to have a physical linkage to the actual transmission. To know what gear you’re in simply look at the gauge cluster display.

Salute ...TGIF I could not agreed more with your POV abt Lexus new products Not to sound shady, but their quality changed a lot when the new Lexus America CEO and Toyota new CEO took control, their cars are becoming to American for me. If Volvo had that reliability stamp like Toyota/Lexus have... babyyyyy, I will not consider buying a Lexus product. Car that I think you will like driving is the new Mazda. How confy was this car over there at higway?The bumps and lumps etc etc compared with the cars that you own(minus the Gx)?Will you change your Rav4 prime or Camry for this car?

TGIF here too! Having had (leased) a Volvo, I completely agree that if they had better reliability I would 100% be over there right now, LOL!! I don’t know why but Mazda has never really been that interesting to me. And unfortunately the new CX90 is having all kinds of issues though that’s not entirely surprising since it’s a totally new vehicle inside and out. Hopefully they’ll be able to get that sorted over the next few years. As for Toyota quality, while Koji Sato hasn’t done much, Akio Toyoda was actually at the helm when all these cars were being developed so you can thank him for that. He put a huge emphasis on hybrids and efficiency across the line (which was the right move, obviously), but that’s also why we lost all of the V6 and V8 cars too. Akio Toyoda also wasn’t a truck guy at all so he’s also why their truck line aged so significantly but they were at the top of their game with performance and sporting cars.

I've worked for an automotive supplier and people dont know many car brands use vinyl with a fancy name and real leather on small parts of the seats. Problem is, they still market it as leather seats but its not FULL LEATHER seats. Laws haven't caught up to this marketing theme yet but automakers have been lying for years and charging top dollar for synthetic materials. Its a ripoff.
