Another huge JP game auciton just ended and the results are all over the place. Some really bad buys, some big surprises, and some stuff that is probably too cheap!

A lot of what is going on right now is reminiscent of when graded games in general started hitting Heritage and other auction sites. Some of these purchases will likely end up being great in the next 3-5 years (assuming JP video games is a "thing" that sticks), and some of them, like Secret of Mana and/or FFV, will likely see their values go down as many more get sent in for grading and begin cycling in the market. With these JP auctions only happening once or twice a year, the price corrections and discovery phase is going to be a lot slower than what we experienced with North American games. There is just way less volume in general. Frankly, it's a good time to be selling some of this more common stuff (the stuff that is well known to be common) while the values are high. Interested in consigning with Heritage? Use this link for free appraisals and to start the process (if your games are raw, include pictures when possible): www.ha.com/free-appraisals.s?slug=www&ic=WorthFreeAuctionEvaluation-010113

Fascinating take on the market. Will Japanese Games be like the UK first edition of Harry Potter (where the original, non-NA, 1st print sells for more than the the NA, 1st print) or a 'No Rarity' Pokemon card or yugioh card (where collectors hardly acknowledge the 'true' first print for decades)? I understand that different collecting categories look at this question differently. It seems like you're getting at the idea that folks are going off of some uneducated yet cautious optimism that the former may happen some day - the "VGA 90 or bust" definitely resonates with that thought. I like to imagine a book collector seeing a super scarce King James Bible come up in auction and simply saying, "Nah. I prefer uncirculated copies." Is the optimism justified? I understand that we didn't see synchronized release dates between NA/Japan for Nintendo's mainline games until the Nintendo Switch, so the first prints for anything Nintendo/Sony are probably going to be consistently Japanese going into the late 2010s. Especially into the 2000s, Japanese games got much better cover art. On the downside, the supply might be too high for some of this stuff - I understand Japanese collectors are generally famous for keeping these items in pristine condition but also are only starting to get into graded stuff. Even then, it's just to sell abroad over YJ or Ebay instead of owning (whereas I'm sure plenty of Brits are actively trying to get a UK first print of Harry Potter) - that could result in very different market sizes. Honestly, I think the market's trajectory is just going to be a function of how many moderately wealthy folks take sustained interest in this category. I was trying to do some price modeling for an antiques hobby, and the big "price prediction" variable that I accidentally got at was, "which rich people collect this particular thing?" Very excited to see what happens!

What are you talking about? You mean my zelda sealed with 8 screws, with trademark of 1981 and legend on the left of the logo isn't the first print of the game? I call BS

The result of investorinos going nuts trying to catch the next wave of anything. This is not much different from the CIB uptick, or the pandemic boom. People see movement and start spending without enough info to make sound decisions... I've always said, there's always more stock out there, and especially in Japan. With that said, I think some Japanese games will be valuable just for how well they present, and how they capture the mood of the games.

In order to search on Yahoo Auctions Japan, you have to use a proxy service like FromJapan, Buyee, ZenMarket, etc. So I'd recommend looking at their different fees and reading some reviews of them and then choosing which to use. I have personally used Buyee and I know many others who are happy with ZenMarket. Just slight differences amongst them!

Seem like only go after huge games in NA and only sell high graded stuff. Anything vga 85 or lower you might as well hold until the market settles

I haven't seen many Rockman 3 pop up for sale on YAJ either, but I do know a seller on ebay was trying to sell at least 3 of them in 85/85+ grade a few years ago. Not sure what the VGA pop looks like for that game.

Awesome video! I wonder how many more people we need in the Japanese space for the common stuff to not be "common" haha (100 people? 1000 people? 10,000 people? :O ) It'd really stonk if we get people in Japan into the graded / unopened / sealed collecting

I would love to know how many JP people are participating in these auctions. Obviously theree are some very serious JP collectors that exist, but how widespread is this whole graded/unopened thing at this point?
