2024 Toyota Grand Highlander - Do You Like It?

The Hybrid Kings are back and you will love what they did with the 2024 Grand Highlander. But what makes the new Highlander so grand? Toyota is now competing directly in the mid sized third row market and they have made quite the entrance with their 2024 Grand Highlander. It has more space, more features and more power, a LOT more power than the regular Highlander. Much like the Scottish Highlanders of old who lived off the land, the new Grand Highlander can also drive off the land with its massive list of drive modes paired with Toyota's all wheel drive system. The big story in all of this is how does the third row feel? Can it compete with the Honda Pilot and Volkswagen Atlas?

I think Hybrids, particularly PHEVs are the future, at least here in Canada and other cold climates. At least until they get the battery technology figured out. Losing 50% of your range at -40 is one thing but the charging a battery in the cold is going to be the real limiter for the majority of potential owners. If they get the battery technology figured out though then I see no advantage to having a ICE in a vehicle to the vast majority of owners, assuming the economy of scale makes EV and ICE vehicles cost relatively the same eventually.

I agree. I wonder how Norway is overcoming this challenge though with such high EV adoption and cold climate.

@@Charles31822 It's a good question and one I don't know the answer to. There is certainly learning to be had all around though. If they are doing something or have solutions to the issues then I'm ready to hear them!

Great stuff here. Thanks for sharing and for letting us know your thoughts. As fellow Canadians we wonder the same things. EV is not the obvious answer yet. Will it get there, maybe one day. Mike yourself, we are ready to listen and see, but until then, the Hybrid and Plug on Hybrid are a great step forward of the goal is to one day remove the internal combustion engine. Until then, enjoy what you have now. The automotive world is always a fun one to be a part of.

Here’s my take. They need to take Land Cruiser’s aesthetics and Highlander’s fuel efficiency and combine them into one car, with different packages to suit different needs. I want a 3 row Toyota SUV that doesn’t look like a minivan/soccer mom in car form. But I can’t tolerate 16 mpg.
