Boy, has Toyota needed this - a car-based, 3-row with a real 3rd row. The regular Highlander is OK in this regard but for an active family with grown kids, their friends and sports stuff this is the SUV to have in Toyota’s vast lineup. While the highly anticipated new Sequoia turned out to be a dud, the Grand Highlander is priced right, sized right and offers plenty of trims and a trifecta of powertrains to cater to every shopper. As long as you’re not a heavy tower, choosing this over the Sequoia is a no-brainer.

Once they make the Grand Highlander Prime then they will have a GH for every taste.

With the Hybrid Max powertrain, this is clearly the best SUV in the class, offering massive power and class-leading fuel economy. It is so much better than the standard Highlander, for just a little more, makes you wonder why they still offer that model at all?

Just be aware if ur taller than 6’2 sit in the car there have been complaints that the padding on the center console is too much and restricts the right knee comfort

Size wise, I see the Toyota Grand Highlander as a comparison to the GM crossovers based on size (Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave).

Steve, thanks for a great look at another nice attempt by Toyota to put forth a gapless lineup. You compare this to the Sequoia and the regular Highlander. How do you think it stacks up (if ground clearance and this crap about the uncoolness of minivans are irrelevant) against the Sienna? Prices and length are close, it seems.

I mentioned this in another post, but: I would actually get a Sienna, but it's a little outdated, even the new hybrid one. The technology in it is old; the infotainment system still uses last-gen stuff (even the newer Highlander ditched this), and it still uses a roof-mounted entertainment system instead of head-rest mounted ones, compounded by the fact that you only get a digital rear view mirror in the highest trim. The 360-degree camera resolution is low. My biggest gripe it that getting AWD in all but the lowest trim level deletes the bench 2nd row for captain's chairs, and any trim level past XLE defaults to captain's chairs. If they address those issues, I'd take it over the GH any day. The Sienna gets better MPG, has far more storage behind the 3rd row, has more leg room in the 3rd row, has a more adjustable 2nd row, and has more storage spaces in the 1st row. The GH has the advantage of using newer infotainment, your choice of bench or captain's seats in the 2nd row in any trim, AWD availability in any trim, better-placed USB ports, and more towing-capacity. Hope that helps.

Because minivans are for parents that have given up on all their own hopes and dreams. And now live through their children. Crossover SUVs are for the kool Moms and Dads.

The Sienna has always had relative to the regular Highlander and still has even compared to the GH a larger footprint yet, longer..... not everybody wants that big. Also much lesser ground clearance for today's crappy roads, not to mention even just mild backroading. Also fewer all-wheel drive options.

XLE hybrid itself is almost $50k. Still comes with 6 speaker system of unknown brand. The next trim has 11 speaker premium JBL. Common Toyota, you can do better than that
