I just bought a 2024 XLE hybrid US model two days ago. It is so sharp looking - it holds its own visually against any other car. It drives unexpectedly well compared to other Priuses I've owned. It is very fast (for a Prius) and it rides and handles so smoothly. It has so many features that I wonder how long it will take for me to explore them all. I only ask where has this car been for the last 15 years?!?

Such a good looking car, finally up to date styling. It's a huge seller here in Japan, and the limited practicality (small boot) can partly be explained by the Japanese market with loads of compact MPV type cars that are uber-practical. This Prius looks best in dark grey!... very slick. 😊

Looks good, fuel/electric efficient with proper range, interior with real buttons and logically put together? I would 100% buy this over a Tesla. It's a shame that german automakers have gone all in on capacitive bs, screen only, unintuitive interiors, and are having oriental manufacturers show them up in modern cars. Very well done Toyota.

The prius was always years ahead in development compared to many other cars ... well done toyota, now adding a stunning design to it. We had 2 of the earlier generation ones, never any fault and prefect to the detail that even then non-hybrid/standard battery was commented on by the battery man (who replaced it once - after 9 years!) Sold both for more than bought for too, rare in the car world, another sign of quality, appeal and just 'the right buy'

A big improvement on previous gens', living up to Akio Toyodas claim "No more boring cars".We have the same saying in english "Knock on wood" (even in New Zealand).16 or 17 inch wheels are fine, bigger ones reduce range as well as comfort. A lower priced small pickup based on the Corolla Cross platform with a lot of the same tech is coming, that will be interesting.

Hello, Good to view your honest opinions on the new Prime. Thank you. We waited 21 months for our 2024 Prime and "on balance", we are pleased with our choice. As you have pointed out, there are some down sides with the car compared to previous models but, we think those are canceled by the improvements. I checked what gas costs in Germany just now. Humm, folks here love to complain about fuel costs (especially as our province is a big oil producer), but you guys are paying far more than us. 1.81 Euro per litre, wow, that's $2.68 per L in our currency. Right now, we pay $1.82 L CAD. In buying this (our third Prius but, first PHEV), our aim was to eliminate gas usage as much as possible. And so far, it's working. After two months and over 1,850Km travelled there's still a third of the Dealer's free fill-up in the tank. Not bad !. We will see at least 2,000Km on a single fill-up. For now, hydro pricing here is reasonable (under .15Kwh), so running in electric mode only gives us an 80+ Km range for less than $ 2.00. As good as the hybrid system in this car is, we'd still use 3.75 L worth of gas to cover 100Km. Call that 3 L for 80Km. That would cost us $5.46 in gas. We seldom exceed 80Km of driving per day so the hydro approach is far more economical for us. I noticed that your car does not have the trim level designation on the boot lid. Seems outside of NA the model nomenclature is different. Your car has a power boot lid. In Canada, to get that you'd have to pay for the Premium trim level (XSE). And that model would give you the wireless phone charger, yet your car lacks that feature. Also, I notice the car in your video does not have the same rims as you'd find on the upper trims here. Did your car arrive with plastic wheel covers ? Ours did, but, I was amazed to find that under those is a set of nice rims, not the simple stamped steel rims normally found behind plastic hub-caps. Just one of the many odd things this model brings to the market. My wife and me (with four friends), spent a day in Hamburg last month. Nice place.

It's not just about there being or not being a charging infrastructure nearby. It is also about how long it takes to charge the EV battery, and how long you may have to queue at the charging station if all chargers are in use. It is also about how much you may have to pay for a new battery if the one in your car currently gets damaged in an accident. or dies of old age, or for some other reason.

The Prius Plug-in only is practical to either charge it at home or work. When you're on a longer road trip, you simply drive it in hybrid mode. No need to charge on road trips just use gas. Though you could use the charging mode so that the hybrid engine charges the battery. However, it's the least efficient way to drive the car. Toyota quality is second to none. The power train is very refined and well proven. It will easily last you 10-15 years.

I don't understand those people who buy a PHEV out of charge anxiety. Because they don't want to be constantly at the charging station, they buy a PHEV with a miniscule battery that can then often charge slowly and only on AC. So with 1 charge of a PHEV you can then drive 40-60 km before you have to recharge again, while with a BEV you can get 300 km with the same charging time. So if you want to charge less, just buy a BEV, right? Unless you don't want to drive electric most of the time? But then why buy a PHEV?
@cyberpope2137
@cyberpope2137 5 ай бұрын
You don’t just drive it for 50km in full EV mode on longer journeys until it goes flat, you use the hybrid mode. EV mode is mostly for short trips.
@elektrischverhaal5166
@elektrischverhaal5166 5 ай бұрын
@@cyberpope2137 I understand, but after each short trip you then have to recharge for the next short trip, right? So you're going to charge more than someone who would do the same short trips with a real electric car. And considering our daily trips are very often just short trips, and we only need to tap into the full capacity of a BEV's battery a few times a year, on average and over a year, you're going to hang more on the charger than someone with a BEV. So the explanation that a PHEV is ideal for people who have poor charging infrastructure is just nonsense. Unless you never drive in EV mode, but then why a PHEV?

@@phillipbanes5484 the worst of both worlds you mean, Constantly charging to drive in EV mode, and while just continuing to pollute and depend on oil products. real world range is more likely to be 50 km, at best. What we can agree on: overpriced and only true Toyota fans are going to buy this. My EV is now out here in the driveway at 80%, and I can drive over 300 km. More than I will need today. And the same for 360-350 days a year. No charging anxiety, no range anxiety and never having to go for refuelling. Unless we are on car holidays, and then I charge on the way while we eat or take a break. That is what I would call “the best of all worlds”.

@@elektrischverhaal5166 I would look at it differently. We already have a level 1 charger capable plug in our garage. To add a level 2 Tesla charger is $475 + $600 installation = $1,075 (prices are wildly different depending on where you live). When the car is parked in the garage it only takes a few seconds to plug in and it's got the full 44 mile range the next morning. Meanwhile, high speed charging is virtually nonexistent over large parts of the state I live in. So there are places we can't easily go with an BEV because they are too far off of a main road, too far away from a city. That might change in 3, 5 or 10 years, but in the meantime, I can get a full EV experience around town and on my usual short trips, but get hybrid performance when I go upstate (or to visit family in Indiana) and there is no high speed charging infrastructure to speak of (and little population to bring them there quickly). Regarding Federal tax credit, there is a loophole in the US law that allows a $4,500 tax credit when leasing. Toyota passes that through as lease cash (at least in the mid-Atlantic area as of this writing) which helps to greatly reduce the price difference between the PHEV and the HEV. Finally, when I priced car insurance for the Tesla Model 3, I would've paid approximately $1,200 more per year than the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime SE model costs to add to my insurance. So there is a lot more to this decision, depending on individual circumstances, than you've mentioned in your post frankly,.

For us, the main reason to opt for a PHEV was the economics. Here, you can't purchase a BEV for under $ 60,000. Our 2024 Prime cost us a lot less than $ 40,00 after trade-in and government rebates (we traded-in a 2012 Prius C and got half of the original purchase price !). With the range we are seeing (in spring temperatures), 80+ Km on electric only we're going to save a considerable amount for gas over the expected ten to twelve year service life. Right now, to cover 80Km in EV Mode it cost us just under $ 2.00. The same distance in Hybrid Mode currently runs around $ 6.75. It's a rare day that we drive over 80Km anymore. But, when we eventually do we won't have to rely on private chargers and all that entails.

If the yellow was available in the U.S., I would have chosen that. Instead, I have it in silver. The design really looks best up close, except for one evening when it happened to be parked in an empty lot as the sun was setting. That brought the design to life and I just stood there from 30 meters away admiring it. And about the driving experience - aside from Toyota's "futuristic" sound during EV mode, I am extremely impressed with the responsiveness and fuel efficiency.

We ordered a red 2022 Prime in June of 2022. Our third Prius but first PHEV. A Pearl coloured one landed in late March of 2024 !. Seriously. It actually took us a week to finally notice what we had considered to be a white car is actually not. If you look closely it really is pearl coloured. My preferred colour was the Guardian Grey but my wife wanted the red. The day we picked-up our new car the dealer had a Mustard hued XSE parked next to the unit assigned to us. Odd that, as, that colour was never intended to be sent to NA. We loved the colour and would have spent the extra money for it but, it was "spoken for". Love this car; 80+Km on a charge. We'll get at least 2,000Km from one tank of fuel.

If Top Gear us in search of a new host, you should be it!!! Your review was very detailed, concise, on point, and extremely informative. I have to say that I totally love the new design of the Prius and years ago I would never have said that! It is truly a very efficient vehicle that has come a very long way. Of course, I might be a little biased because I have a Toyota Camry hybrid 2015 XLE model that I totally love. It's the best combination of sportiness combined with practicality and of course efficiency. In the future when Camry comes up with a plug-in hybrid model, that would definitely be something I would consider. I still personally feel that EV's are a technology in their infancy, and I really would not like to be part of the beta test group of a first generation product. In the years that go by, battery life will be much more efficient as well as the infrastructure for EV will be much better. For now, the prime line of vehicles are the best way to go.

I am from NYC sales guy has 2019 Prius and I never had clue before about Toyota Prius but after getting company car I have to say that I drive on average 450 miles per week and after a 7 months of driving I really like more Prius than some more luxurious cars I drove. It drives very smooth and good and it grows to one heart. You will either totally love it if you have to drive a little and saves you money on gas. You do not get better more reliable car than Toyota Prius. Only what I hate about it that it is low and sometimes at parking I hit the curb that would be better if Prius would have front camera by parking. Otherwise than that it’s perfect car and if your roads have a lot of holes than it’s not car for you because it’s low ave when you hit big hole it feels really harsh

The solar roof makes sense when you go to a supermarket in Germany most of them have outdoor parking spaces. In summer you can turn the ac on, to let the vehicle stay cool inside wich is good for passengers as well as the fridgerator goods you buy don't melt down because the car has not turn down in an oven of hell!
