What's New
The 2024 Venza is a carryover, but the 2023 model received small, meaningful updates. They include standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 driver assist features, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual phone Bluetooth connectivity, and an updated wireless phone charger. The LE base trim received a standard 7.0-inch gauge cluster display, the XLE got LED foglights and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, and the Limited gained a power front passenger seat, head-up display, rain-sensing wipers, and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
What We Think
Toyota positions the Venza as the upscale hybrid choice in the midsize SUV space, and it mostly delivers. Its ride is primarily comfortable and quiet, and power delivery is smooth. Its cabin is also full of upscale touches, like its blissfully supportive seating. Living with an XLE model for a year, we experienced firsthand how inexpensive it was to fuel and maintain, too.
Under certain stresses, however, performance falters. We didn't find it to be especially quick or athletic in testing, and even at part throttle the engine could get loud and disturb the interior's serenity. Its exterior styling won't appeal to everyone, and given it's a midsizer, we wish it had more cargo space. It's not an everything-for-everyone SUV, but worth consideration for drivers seeking something nicer than a normal crossover, or a better value than small luxury SUVs.
Performance and MPGs
Like last year's model, there's only one powertrain for the 2024 Venza. It uses a 2.5-liter non-turbo inline-four and three electric motors. Toyota pegs combined output at 219 horsepower. A CVT automatic and all-wheel drive are also standard issue. The sprint to 60 mph can come as quickly as 7.1 seconds, according to our tests.
Fuel economy should be close to or the same as the 2023 model. That Venza was good for an impressive 40/37 mpg city/highway. The ratings are much better than the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid's 33/30 mpg city/highway, but an all-new version of that SUV is due for 2024.
Safety Ratings and Features
The 2023 Venza is a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick, the institute's second-highest overall rating. It receives Good ratings in all crash tests except for the updated side test, for which it received Acceptable marks. Headlights also received an Acceptable rating. In NHTSA testing, the 2024 Venza gets the highest grade, a five-star overall safety rating.
An impressive number of active safety and technology features are included as standard, adding to the Venza's value appeal. Last year, the Venza picked up standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. The driver assistance technology bundle includes improved automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping and lane centering systems, automatic high-beams, an emergency steering intervention feature, and road sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic monitoring, and parking sensors are also standard.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
When it's time for a redesign, the first thing Toyota should do with the Venza is engineer more cabin space. Competitors provide both more passenger and cargo room than the 2024 Venza.
Technology
A hands-free power liftgate, 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, 7.0-inch driver information display, six speakers, and four USB-C ports are standard on the 2024 Venza LE base model. Move up to the XLE trim to unlock a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen, center stack capacitive controls, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and more ambient lighting. The Limited top trim comes with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, head-up display, heated steering wheel with powered tilting and telescoping column, and nine-speaker JBL premium audio.
Trim Levels, Pricing, and Availability
The 2024 Toyota Venza is available with four trims this year: LE, XLE, Nightshade Edition, and Limited. Since it's a carryover from last year, any rise in pricing should be modest. Look for the Venza base model to start at roughly $37,000 and the Limited top trim to start at close to $45,500. Deliveries begin October 2023.
