13:32 quick note about the regen braking, i'm sure it works the same as the crv/accord since there's no B gear. In the crv, you can have constant regen in B gear, while in the accord there is no B gear but you can hold down the increase regen paddle and it will hold the level of regen you select until you switch gears or turn off the car

Several years ago we had a 2014 Accord Hybrid Touring that we really liked in most ways. Decent power, great fuel economy, comfortable and quiet ride and enough space for a road trip (trunk space wasn't huge though). Biggest gripe was the droning of the "It isn't a CVT" transmission and engine that seemed to just rev at random times and made it feel like a CVT with a mind of its own. We kept if a few years and sold it because I wanted something with more power (replaced with a 2018 Infiniti Q50RS that I initially really liked but the honeymoon wore off quickly, sold that in 2022 for a '22 Tesla M3P that the wife and I both love), but I have actually missed it on occasion, it was that nice to be in. I have my gripes with Honda (cheap rubber compounds that disintegrate in the sun, paper thin sheet metal, rust, etc) but I get why people love them. They drive superbly and excel at being a fun to drive companion for errands, road trips, etc. This new Civic addresses the biggest issue by giving the "it's not a CVT" transmission programmed steps to mimic a regular auto, and the added power enhances the experience. It seems to be right in the sweet spot. Just beware that if you leave it outside, you can expect all the rubber bits to crack and turn into goo, and you'll have door dings every time someone breathes too hard on it.

Pro tip from somebody who owns a 2019 insight and knows way too much about the IMMD hybrid system: in order to get the most out of sport, you need to drive it around for a little while. This is because, in sport mode, the car will change it's targeted battery charge level to a higher state. This results in a more immediate torque delivery once the battery is at its higher state of charge! I actually use sport mode in my Insight a lot on road trips, not only for passing power, but it actually reduces engine drone when going up hills or passing other people. Drone might not be as much of an issue on this car given that the engine's a 2 l instead of a 1.5 l, but now you know!
@abdulgill5013
@abdulgill5013 Ай бұрын
Yeah, I drive a 2019 insight too and hate the screaming noise it gives when flooring it on regular mode just for it to barely start moving. But I didn’t know that putting it to sport mode would allow the battery to charge more and gain more torque, thanks for letting me know.
@DeadlyCatcher
@DeadlyCatcher Ай бұрын
@@abdulgill5013 I own a 2020 Insight EX. You will immediately notice the difference. Sports mode changes the throttle sensitivity and responds way quicker than in normal mode. I always use it during merging on highways. And as mentioned before, be sure to wait and let the battery charge first.
@terrancecloverfield6791
@terrancecloverfield6791 Ай бұрын
Good tips there. The nuances between Toyota and Honda is the power delivery, where Toyota would rather fire up its gas engine to meet power needs, leading to mechanical shifting and droning because it the HV battery is mostly there for low-end torque needs to achieve its efficiency. Would you know if your battery health is measurable on the Insight? If setting higher SoC leads to shorter battery life span before a replacement is needed, then maybe it's not a good idea to leverage sport mode so much for Honda.
@mattkroening7964
@mattkroening7964 Ай бұрын
@@terrancecloverfield6791 it aims to set a 70% state of charge when in sport mode. Of course, that'll vary a little bit depending on your driving conditions. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to check the battery health

Regen braking is often misunderstood. The brake pedal implements "blended braking," where it applies as much regen as the system deems safe - remember, it works only thru the front wheels - and adds front and rear friction braking for the rest. If you are gentile one the pedal, you can get almost as much from the pedal as you get from the paddles. The paddle setting is persistent in Sport mode if you want near one-pedal driving, or if you hold the paddle back for a second or so. You can also configure it in "individual" mode on the Touring.

The lack of lumbar support makes the car a little uncomfortable on longer drives, for me anyway. I will miss the amazing handling and that Bose sound system. I hope everyone who picks one up thoroughly enjoys it. It was the best compact car I ever owned in my 60+ years.

Thank you for this review. I like the look of this vehicle and, finally, Honda seems to have put some extra effort into things like noise reduction (via the sound system). I don't like the fake noise (it would be the first thing I would try to squelch, if I bought the vehicle). WRT the regenerative braking control, I agree with you; the system should not simply cancel itself whenever one engages the brake pedal. Finally, WRT the 2.0 litre naturally aspirated engine installed in this car, it has been used for the past two years in Civics sold in Europe (and also the Accord). The lower weight of the Civic really makes this shine.

What I love about this and the Toyota system is that they address the weak link in reliability with the lack of a traditional transmission. The more electronic everything is, and less mechanical, the more reliable things will be. I need the size of an accord or Camry but these are very nice cars
@terrancecloverfield6791
@terrancecloverfield6791 Ай бұрын
Hmm...I'm not sold on this yet. Electronics sounds nice until your battery is dead, and you can't disengage the electronic brakes and gears and thereby more reliant on the powers that are, to get your out of a sticky situation. But credit where due, where electric motors are inherently simpler designs and has potential to be more consumer friendly for repair.

Glad to see that Honda has most likely actually improved the sound deadening, at least in the upper end model....Honda's are notorious for road noise (coming from someone who has owned over 10 of them). The only real question I have is whether or not the 'simulated shifts' are evident when in either Normal or Eco modes. I actually like the noise; it helps mask the drone of the engine while accelerating. I want to be fooled like that! Thanks for another great video!

Does it make the weird sound when reversing? Does it start like normal car or Is it just super quite?

Just wondering everything you mentioned for making the car quieter is that only for the hybrid or all trim levels?Thanks.

Great looking civic, but guarantee dealers will be marking these up in the first year (like the redesigned Prius). Honestly, if that's the case, the Accord hybrid is a much roomier and comfortable car, and a compelling alternative for probably not much more money.

Does it feel torquier than Camry Hybrid? Since Toyota won't reveal its torque output, I need something to reference to.

Toyota hybrid cvt doesn't use a belt. It uses a eCVT with a planetary gear.

Here in the UK if you are in sports mode the regen braking stays on the setting you choose all the time. I'm not sure how the North American Civic hybrid gets 204hp when we only get 184hp yet the torque figures of 315 feet lb are identical, something does not add up.

Love everything about it but having to paddle for regen everytime seems like a update or setting you should have.

Do you know if the final model will have rear vents or is that just exclusively for Accords?

I know it's been a minute since you drove this but could you tell us how the simulated gear shift felt? I don't love gimmicks and that would be the only "issue" I see with this car. Thanks

I still wish they had done literally anything new on the interior. Or at the very least moved the higher end infotainment and cluster to be in all hybrid trims.
