Should you get the #2025 #hondagrom or find an older one? 2023 Grom owner explains.
Grom ABS (MSX125A)
Grom SP (MSX125SP)
Grom (MSX125)
Small in stature, but huge in popularity and fun, the Honda Grom is back with a fresh new look for the 2025 model year. Marking the fourth generation of the immensely popular pint-sized model, this update brings redesigned bodywork for an aggressive new look. Popular in part for its customization potential, the Grom can be customized via a full range of new Honda Accessories, including both storage and style upgrades. Appealing to riders of all backgrounds, thanks to its approachable, peppy and smile-inducing character, the Grom continues to be one of the powersports industry's top-selling models-and the undisputed emperor of the miniMOTO world.
HISTORY
Since its 2014 model-year introduction, the Grom has always been about enjoyment, serving as an inspiration and focal point for riding clubs and social-media groups, while also supporting a healthy aftermarket of accessory and performance parts. Eliciting laughs from those who ride it, thumbs-ups from fellow motorists and traffic-light smiles from pedestrians, the Grom is also a motorcycling evangelist, spreading positive powersports vibes wherever it goes. For the 2017 model year, the model underwent a comprehensive redesign for a sharper, more aggressive look.
The Grom's current iteration (introduced for the 2022 model year) features striking bodywork that facilitates customization, plus a peppy engine with a fifth gear. As always, the model boasts amazing gas mileage, low operating and maintenance costs, attention to detail and Honda's legendary reliability.
For the 2025 model year, the Grom receives refreshed styling with all new bodywork and an available host of new, innovative accessories that elevate the miniMOTO experience.
Importantly, the Grom's success has also served as the springboard for a trio of retro-themed miniMOTO siblings: the Monkey and Super Cub in model-year 2019 and the Trail125 for model-year 2021.
DESIGN / STYLING
The fourth-generation Grom is outfitted with almost entirely new bodywork, giving the miniMOTO icon a fresh look. From the headlight cover to the shrouds, tank cover and side covers, each component has been carefully redesigned, offering aggressive style, while prioritizing rider comfort. The four main body panels quickly attach and detach, facilitating customization-a hallmark of Grom culture that is welcomed by customers eager to personalize their rides. The Grom's sleek aesthetic is enhanced by its blacked-out engine, exhaust, wheels and swingarm.
Practical features include an ample fuel capacity of 1.59 gallons, and the LCD digital dash has a gear-position indicator, alongside the speedometer, tachometer, twin trip meters, fuel gauge and clock.
ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN
The Grom's appeal is more than skin deep. The engine is a modern design that includes a fifth gear for comfortable cruising. The gear ratios provide not only peppy acceleration from low speeds, but good top speed as well.
The 125cc two-valve, overhead-cam, air-cooled engine has a compression ratio of 10:1. This is achieved via an undersquare design, with a narrow bore and long stroke-specifically 50.0mm and 63.1mm, respectively.
State-of-the-art PGM-FI fuel injection assures optimal fuel delivery and highly efficient combustion. A large, 2.5-liter airbox houses a panel-type, wet-paper filter with a 10,000-mile life in normal riding conditions. Many Grom owners prefer to do their own maintenance, so the replaceable oil filter is a welcome feature.
Do-it-yourselfers also appreciate the exhaust downpipe and muffler, which are two separate parts to simplify replacement.
CHASSIS / SUSPENSION
The suspension comprises a 31mm inverted fork and a single shock. The brakes feature a dual-piston front caliper with 220mm rotor, and a single-piston rear caliper with 190mm rotor. Wheels are a 12-inch cast design-a signature feature of the Grom-with a five-spoke pattern.
Of special note, the available front ABS system operates through an IMU (inertial measurement unit) to reduce the possibility of front-wheel lockup and to keep the rear wheel down during aggressive braking.
ACCESSORIES
For 2025, a range of new accessories are available for the Grom. The Knuckle Visors, Meter Visor and Under Cowl offer both style and function while the Cloth Seat Bag, Rear Carrier and Cloth Saddlebags bring a new level of utility. The Grom SP is outfitted with the Under Cowl as standard equipment.

I hope they don't gentrify the grom. Bikers call small bikes toys (while they commute and run errands every day) then taking their "real bike" out for Sunday ridesies to nowhere 😅 big bikes are toys. Small bikes hold to world together

I used to own a 2019 Grom. Heavy modded with 181cc complete kit. Loved that little thing! Had to sell it. But would love to own 1 again. Honestly I'm not a big fan of the latest design.

Why change it if it’s good? The 25’ Grom has nice body panels but it’s good to know the mechanical parts and accessories are interchangeable with the older model.

Looks are looks, none of the years stand out... they're Groms, small little bikes with loads of character that will leave most people with a smile on their face. I started riding 60 years ago, exploring first in the dirt and eventually on the street. These little bikes are loads of fun, can take you almost anywhere, cost peanuts to run and will just about run for ever. What's not to love?

It’s crazy how well they hold their value. The body styling doesn’t sell me on the new model over a used model. I’m on a green 19sf

‘25 plastic will fit ‘22-‘24, but you must change all body panels ( cannot mix triangle with new tank shroud). 🤙

The new body panels look more streamlined than the 22-24 models, but I wouldn't trade up if you already have a 22-24. I wish Honda would up the compression on these to 11:1 to get the power up to 10-11 crank HP.

I like the 25 groms I really never liked the exposed bolts on the earlier models it just killed the entire bike for me. But this one I might trade my old 19 grom for a 25. That SP is doing something for me and I can't resist.

Kirk, you should check the Husqvarna Vitpilen, a really cool looking motorcycle. They have 125, 250, 401 versions, not sure which ones they have in USA. There might also be a 200 version internationally.

So quick question. I sat on a grom YEARS ago like when they first came out. I felt that my feet were almost behind my ass in the seating position. So I never got one. Years later I got a Benelli 135 and fit perfect on it (I’m 6’3). Seating position was great, handlebars never hit my knees even at full tilt, had more cc’s and an extra gear than the from. Plus it was cheaper. The exhaust from the factory sounds sick as well. Would totally recommend. However I sold that bike a couple years ago and am wanting to get another bike. I haven’t sat on a grom in years and need to run by my local shop to see if the seating arrangement has changed since my first time sitting on one. You said you’re a “big guy” in the vid, how tall are you? Just wondering how the seating position is for a big guy until I can get my ass on one locally to see for myself.

Honestly, why would you buy a older model when the new one costs the same? Also on a side note: You shouldn't be doing this review Kirk, you seem to talk too much trash about the bike. Get rid of it to someone who will appreciate it.
