The 2025 CX-50 proves that Mazda's legendary handling can be applied to the SUV market, continuing the brand's stellar reputation for handling in sedans. Rare in the compact crossover class, the driving delights are provided by its nimble chassis, intuitive steering, and lively optional 256-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder. Even with the entry-level 187-horsepower nonturbo four-cylinder engine, you'll still have a blast behind the wheel thanks to the standard all-wheel drive system. In addition, the CX-50 has a high-quality cabin that can hold its own against SUVs of a comparable size from premium companies, elevating the overall experience with an air of sophistication that is apparent the second you climb inside. Thanks to its many desirable features, the CX-50 is a top pick among our SUVs. We also highly recommend it, along with other great options like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Honda CR-V.
For 2025, Mazda has improved the base model CX-50 with a larger 10.3-inch infotainment display instead of the 8.8-inch unit that was previously standard. Additionally, the voice assistant Alexa from Amazon is now included as standard across the board. A new rear-seat alert system and improved pedestrian recognition performance at night are just two of the driver-assistance technologies that have been upgraded for the CX-50. Previously reserved for the highest-end Premium Plus models, the wireless smartphone charging pad is now included on every trim level save the entry-level Select. Separately, Mazda has introduced a new CX-50 Hybrid, but we will cover that vehicle in its own evaluation.
A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is standard across the board, but the 256 hp turbocharged version is the way to go; the 187 hp standard non-turbo is the entry-level model. In addition to standard all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission, Mazda has fine-tuned the CX-50 for responsive handling. It continues the line of entertaining cars made by the brand. While testing the CX-50, we were impressed by how it combined precise steering with a pleasant ride and an enjoyable driving experience. We also have a separate review of the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid, which is available with a powertrain that is sourced from the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
