Grocery shopping is the most flexible of all your spending categories. Here are 21 frugal grocery hacks to give you a head start on savings.
When trying to reduce monthly expenses, these tips for grocery shopping on a budget will help you.
Here are the tips I have used for years to reduce my grocery budget and feed my family on one income.
Don’t fall for the manipulations of food manufacturers and the grocery store tricks that try to get you to spend more money. Instead, learn to beat the system and save money on your food budget. Learn to make sacrifices and change behaviors to stretch your money and enjoy budget grocery shopping a little more.
Planning and thought once or twice a month (meal planning and food prep) will go far when budgeting for a week, two weeks, or an entire month. These grocery shopping hacks are brilliant.
My favorite of all might be meal planning. Or maybe buying in bulk. If you were to see my pantry stockpile (which is in the cellar), you would know immediately. This frugal grocery tip saves me money in the long run to stock up when items go on sale.
Knowing these 21 frugal grocery hacks will prepare you to spend less at the grocery store - leaving you to manage your money better and use the savings toward something more important. Its time to save money on your food budget.

You can also remodel your leftovers. Roll them up in a tortilla and make a wrap. Spoon them over hot toast. Blitz a savory casserole in the food processor, add broth and make it into a soup. Thicken up a savory soup with vegetables and cornstarch, pour it into a crust and make a pot pie. If you have chili or something similar, bake some potatoes and top them with chili and cheese. Bits of meat and vegetables can be spiced up and stuffed into dumplings. Remodeling your leftovers gives them new life and makes them more appealing to eat than "not THAT again."

I'm 67 and mom always said leftovers taste better than freshly made because the seasonings have a chance to marinate into the food. I have to agree, depending on the food. Another idea: I always gave my two teenager boys one night apiece, every week, where they were responsible for planning and cooking a dinner for the family. It worked out really well for everyone because the boys learned a great deal about shopping, food handling and meal prep and became something they looked forward to (and me as well as I was working full-time). Thank you for all the great tips.

My brother would have then proclaimed a sandwich night once a week! 😀 I actually had the challenge that my family used to cook for six people for a couple of days. So, there were usually huge portions. When I began living alone, I found that I could adapt few of these recipes I knew. "Cooking for one person with no freezer" was nothing I had learned at home!

A daughter-in-law shared this with me. After Christmas, buy, for example, the Christmas M & Ms Then, sort them by color. Use the red and white candies for Valentines Day and the green ones for Saint Patric’s Day. This has been a lot of fun to put into a candy bowl for guests and to decorate cookies, cakes, etc.. Try it, even the sorting can be fun, You can even involve any children who may be around.

Stay out of the stores - I absolutely need to do this. My freezers and pantry are stuffed - no reason to go, but I still do. My goal for December is to not go grocery shopping at all. We are traveling to see family 12/21-30th, and I'll likely buy a few things to help round out the meals while we're there, but no shopping at home prior to the trip.

I do hope you are still doing this the prices are supposed to be going back up, regardless of what the government says. Walmart, target and costco have all said consumers are buying less (they can't afford it) however, they are supposed to raise their prices by 1/3 this spring. It's a mess.

When I buy mince. I cook it all with onion and garlic, drain off any fat. I divide in 2 batches. One half I make a passata tomato sauce base I use to make bolonaise, lasagne etc, I reserve half a cup and freeze and use this sauce as a base for pizza or filling for sandwiches in sandwich maker OR to add to minestrone. The other divided batch I add mixed vegetables, beef stock cubes and thicken, I make savoury mince, curried mince, shepards pie or meat pie. I reserve half cup from this batch and freeze and use as a filling with a slice of cheese for toasted sandwiches in a sandwich maker.

Plus I can most of my food I dehydrate a lot of my food, a meal prep for the week and I make things homemade. I only grocery shop once a month which saves me money , but I look at my pantry first to see what I really need. All these all these items save me money. I just wanted to add that each department in a grocery store has marked down items which may help some of your viewers to cut down on grocery cost.

So many great tips but there I had a couple favorites. Shopping from your pantry is HUGE! It prevents wasting food makes you aware of what you use for ingredients and what doesn't go as fast. Also, the discount produce before it heads to the dark side. My grocery store will mark down citrus from time to time. Those limes with the brown spots are perfect for juicing and freezing in ice cube trays. Thaw a few cubes and you have fresh lime juice for margaritas! Thank you for so many great shopping tricks!

Some years back, I helped a man clear out the foods his deceased wife left behind. He had not touched her kitchen drawers and freezer since her death. I was shocked that most foods - canned, frozen - had already expired about half a year after her death. Sauces, canned vegetables, canned fish, frozen vegetables, frozen meat. I looked it up online - food in your freezer mostly lasts only 6 months. Then I had forgotten about a package of Christmas cookies and found them half a year later. The cookies were completely tasteless, like sawdust. Just 6 months after they were sold! Also, I found this on different cookie packages and even seasonings later - "expiry date (not "best before") - 2 months after buying in one case, 6 months after buying in many cases. That means, buying these in advance makes no sense. I remember chocolate bars my grandmother had that were greying. She had often only bought them about a year before. You would think you could buy chooclate and store it in your living room cabinet, but no. Even sparkeld water became still water about 6 months after being stored unopened in a cold basement. (Water was bought in plastic bottles, maybe that is different for glass bottles). Those were all groceries I had believed to have a much, much longer shelf life. The water ended up being used for ice cubes. Today, I believe a pantry for about 2 months is fine and then you should plan another shopping trip. Only dry goods such as pasta may keep long.

Thank you for this presentation. Very good indeed. Here are my suggestions: Before you go shopping, go into your larder, cupboards, fridge and freezer Make a shopping list and stick to it Learn what foods are seasonable and so the items are like to be better price Batch cook and freeze portions for another meal Learn the art of using up If you are single or have a small family, buy those whole joints, say, of brisket and cut them up into smaller joints to freeze Buy whole chickens and joint them up, using the "back" of the chicken to make stock for soups, gravies, and casseroles Set yourself a budget and stick to it

When I make a roast I use the leftovers to make soup. With a pork roast, I’ll make bbq pork sandwiches out of it. I always save the bananas that get to brown to eat, throw them in the freezer and take them out when I want to make banana bread.

Great tips! Two things that I now do are to keep a list of the fresh produce I have on hand so I can remind myself what needs to be used first. Also, here in Australia, it's common to buy 500g/1lb pre-packs of mushrooms, so I use what I need right away and then cook and I freeze the rest. They're so convenient then to add to pasta sauce, pie filling, taco fillings etc - I'm embarrassed to admit how much I've wasted before doing this. Cheers!!

One other thing that shocked me: I bought from a supermarket chain in my town. Broccoli frozen for 99 cents. Then, one day I went to the neighboring town that had the same supermarket chain, but by a different owner - the broccoli (same brand and weight) was 1.49 €! So, maybe check if this is the case for the chain you buy from (it is not the case always, depending on the chain) and then check where which products are cheaper.

Except for frozen veggies and canned beans, shop the perimeter of the store. The processed foods (and junk) are in the center aisles. If you have bulk facilities (often cooperatives have them), get spices, flours, sugars, beans, coffee, in bulk. It’s a great way to try a particular spice without having to spend $ on a prepackaged container.

We did that with Chili. Monday night Chili w/cornbread (I substitute plain yogurt for sour cream). Wednesday night I cook elbow macaroni and add in leftover chili (minus some chili set aside) serve with cooked carrots. Friday 🎉 leftover chili (chili/Mac if any left, also) hot dog bar - cheese, chili, onions, relish, etc; plus potatoes of some kind - FF, cut up oven roasted, chips (some like chili over potatoes w/cheese on top). This develop over the years and became a family favorite in winter. Normally I would not have leftovers of the same thing 3x in a week.

So I bought it and cut it up into portions and put it in my freezer because the Thanksgiving coming of course I wouldn't be eating it right away. But it was a great price and I'm sure it was on sale because nobody was looking for a roast at this time of year.

Tip 22, lol. Know the coupon policies of the stores in your area. Example: Store A frequently offers a $10 off $75 purchase. Store B accepts competitors coupons for $ off $$ Store coupons. Usually store B has better deals when Store A offers a $ off coupon. So I use the Store A coupon at store B. Additional tip: don’t use it just to use it! The last time I used it I combined it with my senior discount at Store A because they had a month long sale on dry beans. All were a $1 a lb, my senior discount and the $ off coupon took the beans to $0.83lb which is good for chickpeas (reg. $1.50) and other beans in my area. I did not buy pinto beans because I can get them for $0.75lb regularly.

I've noticed that often buying the bigger items is more expensive per pound or serving than the smaller size. So, comparison shop Know your prices. If you're shopping in more than one store, knowing how much something costs in each store will tell you whether or not it's a good deal. Forget the k cups. Either use a reusable one or use a drip coffee maker. It costs me less than a dime to make a cup of coffee in my small, drip coffee maker. I've heard that grinding your own beans makes it even cheaper. But, I can only drink decaf due to a medical reason, and they don't sell the beans around here, so don't know if it's true or not.

In fact, I was a sales rep to grocery stores, and my company told me not to go into the stores that day. I would never go into a store the day before a holiday. That’s when all the procrastinators go. And we can’t go more than a week without getting healthy vegetables for salads. Shopping less than that would be a problem.

way to save money-- don't buy K cups. make your coffee from ground coffee. we also keep a list of all meals that we make that are hits with our family- separated into pastas/ soups etc. So in a week we can just go through and choose 6 or seven that we want that week. Also we use 10 oz water bottles and add 8 oz of water and 2 oz of 100 % no sugar added juice. Great way to get the kids to drink more water, they love it, and great way to change up your water and add Vitamin C. Also really cut back on your meat consumption.

Great advice as usual. We are renting a small studio in Austria and I'm so sad I can't buy in bulk anymore because of my tiny camper size fridge/freezer. Me and my boyfriend literally have to take turns buying our favourite frozen foods because 2 items don't fit the damn freezer lol. Seeing your pantry made me a bit jealous

I don't need to make a list when going to the grocery. With inflation, cost of goods have soared and the amount of money you need to fill a cart has doubled. I just buy about 5-6 items which are on promo, the cart is full and all the money is gone.

@@saraconklinfrozenpennies I didn't cut my grocery in half, instead my grocery costs doubled. I just have at least two meals a day. This goes for all my pets, which are about 20 of them. Their meals have also changed. Money needs to be stretched. I grow plants in the backyard which more often than not, the chickens eat all vegetables they find or the neighbors get them. I've been losing chickens together with the eggs. I try to preserve whatever is left from the harvest.

I'm new to your channel I do many of these tips I mostly buy store brands (except when it comes to stouffers mac and cheese, can't stand the others) I learned a lot by watching my late mom Shop she always bought the store brands over the name brands

I'm watching this 2 years after the video premiered, and inflation is running amok. One thing I noticed at my local supermarket - they hide cheaper products in very sneaky ways. Bagel brands like Thomas are in the bread aisle at around $5.00 a bag, but in the refrigerator section, on the top shelf above the butter and margarine where it's kind of dark, they keep a local brand selling for only $1.99. Same amount of bagels, same taste. Sure, the bagels are hard because they've been refrigerated, but if you toast or microwave them for 30 seconds before eating, they become as soft as when they were baked. Who would think to look for bagels in the refrigerated section ? Check out the dark corners of your store. You might be surprised to find what they hide.

Look in your cupboard, make a menu, then go shopping. Figure out which grocery store is cheapest and just go. Your time is valuable and running around to every store in town chasing a deal wastes gas and your time.

Good video! We don't meal plan. We stockup when what we use is on sale at a good price. Chicken leg quarters are .99 cents a lb. this week. That's what we will stockup on. Our chicken in the freezer is getting low.

So this came up in my KZfaq feed and I didn't notice it was from a year ago when you said April 2022 I was like oh my gosh she's eating expired food then noticed that this video is old but I want to make a comment because fact of the matter is stores jack up the prices during the holidays to lower the prices if you shop those same items during non-holiday time you can find a better price. As far as Dollar Tree and Dollar General I find that you can go to Walmart and find a better price nine times out of 10 so I tried to stay out of the Dollar Tree Dollar General scene because you will end up spending more people say it's only $1.25 but it can be 89 cents at Walmart that's a substantial savings just like I had bought some Hillshire Farm lunchmeat you know it's in the red container I was at the grocery store and saw that it was two or three dollars more than what I was usually paying at Walmart so I literally go across the street and saved that $2- $3 so you have to know your prices because sometimes a sale is not really a legit sale they just want you to think that you're getting a discount but you're not really getting a discount why do you think the eggs are in the back of the store 9 out of 10 times because they want you to buy 15-20 other things on the way to get those eggs the one thing that you walked in for.

I don't get the only once a month shopping. Fresh veggies don't last for that long. Even bread doesn't last for 2 weeks before it gets green stains. And salad only lasts for several days in the fridge. How can you have fresh food when going to the Store so seldomn?

I freeze bread. I have greens in a clamshell container that will last a good two weeks with a paper towel in them to absorb moisture. My organic milk will keep a month (or be frozen) Eat the fruit that goes bad the fastes first. Save the oranges, pears, apples, and grapes for the second half. Choose frozen brocolli instead of fresh.
