On the subject of Chiburi, I researched various techniques on how to beat or wipe the blood off the blade in different ways.
There are many more variants in Iaido, but they often only differ in one angle or one position. There is also the spiritual aspect of cutting off blood, which I will not go into specifically here.
I tried to summarize the most concise possibilities and present them in a video.

For the love of nihonto, people, please do not wipe your swords with grass, leaves or any other plant material.

I fully agree with you! Any organic residue on the blade will result in rusting. Even after practicing cutting, you should always use alcohol to remove vegetable residue from the blade before oiling it. The video is intended to show the various options there are for primarily wiping/knotting off the blood. Because if I were actually in a battle in the woods, my blade was bloody and I had no other tools, I would improvise by pre-cleaning it with dry grass or leaves before putting it in the Saja. Afterwards, when you are safe and calm, you must of course prepare the blade accordingly!

Yeah I have no clue what this guy is doing but it’s not Japanese sword.. one or two of those are actual chiburi!! One of them he grabbed the blade… you never never ever ever ever touch the blade… even when cleaning at home…. Never bare skin on blade after togishi

You can, you just have to clean the blade afterwards, just a cloth does nicely. Also Chiburi is also known as Chiburui, which is “Readyness stance” and Chiburui was shortened to Chiburi after the way. It’s not meant to shake the blood off, it’s meant to ready yourself for another attack and tk check to see if the blade is ok. Let’s Ask Shogo and Let’s Ask Seki Sensei have videos on both.

@@boywhohasl1vedhascometodie469 correct. Blood acts a bit like water when it's fresh and still warm. Very little if any stays on a blade. And shaking it wouldn't really remove any serious amount.

Impressive video! I loved the segment with your daughter at the end, it was truly heartwarming. Also some little nitpicks and fun facts about Chiburi, is that it really not intended to shake off the blood on the blade, but rather a way to prepare yourself for the next attack. The original word for Chiburi was “Chiburui” which the word correlates to a ready movement, idk what it directly translates into. It is used both to steel yourself for another attack and to check if the blade is ok, in case if the Mekugi (pin for the blade) is broken or not. Most Chiburui came after the War, when Iaido really took off. For one of the other ones, using organic material makes sense if you are in a tight situation and you don’t have an adequate cloth and if you don’t want to use your Hakama, Kimono, etc, which would be the better option instead of using the forest floor. A good resource for Katana related things would be “Let’s Ask Seki Sensei.” It’s a channel ran by Shogo, but the person in subject is a grand master of a Ryuha that has existed for 22 generations, I would recommend you check that out!

Hello, I can't tell you the names because some of them I don't know either. I need 10 different Chiburis for my next Kenjutsu graduation to show that I have dealt with the topic. I did a lot of research and looked at a lot of material on KZfaq. Especially in Iaido there are many different variants, which often only differ in a different angle or a different position. I then put 21 together, which for me are fundamentally different. I then summarized these in a video.

Thanks for your comment Movie swords are mostly blunt weapons made of aluminum. These are light and you can work with them very quickly. My weapon is a hardened steel true cutting kata. Such a weapon is heavier and, due to the inertial drag of the mass, cannot be carried as quickly as an aluminum weapon. But this weapon and speed rather reflects the actual situation in Japan at that time.

I will not comment the gentleman0s dressing nor his ways that loog a little "bumpkin". :1) no swinging will ever clean a blade.2) the Shinto ryu " hitting with a fist" is done with the wrong hand:.3) the only effective cleaning are the ones made with the hand ( in Hoki ryu we do that, however in a more educated and subdued way) or with a napkin ( not letting it drop on the soil) or with a part of the garnment ( however, the wicìves object very much to it.)
@georgefreesamurai
@georgefreesamurai Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Even if clothing is a matter of taste, I partially agree with you on a few points. One swing will never completely cleanse a blade of blood. And the best option would be to wash it off with an absorbent handkerchief, followed by a follow-up. But a swing throws off most of the blood, which the cloth then no longer needs to absorb. So the Chiburis make sense. In addition, I think that protecting the blade from corrosion and the Saja had the highest priority in a battle and the optimal conditions were not always offered for this. Therefore, dirty clothing or other circumstances were accepted rather than the blade rusting. And this video should show what different forms of blood wiping/beating off there were. But you gave me a good idea for a new video where I will scientifically examine actual cleaning of the blade with real blood and check your comment. Thanks very much! So maybe we'll see each other again in the fall.

... Very bad, rushed, no transfer, just muscles, you have got to start anew EVERYTHING from the ground up, or indeed you will end up in a very very bad and painful spot in a couple years if you continue like that. Review your priorities right now. You look very much out of touch with your body. Take it from someone who did the same obvious, blatant mistakes earlier in his own life and who now fights to repair them mistakes with 100 time more energy needed than just doing the right thing from the get go. Best of luck. I see your confidence, your faith, but zero applied self-knowledge.

@@georgefreesamurai Hi. I am not purist at all. I worry about your health. I have a similar body built to yours and I can see you would have a lot to win by developing your kinesthesis. That would help you build fluid momentum from the ground up. It's not only about sword and art, it's about daily activities too. everything can be used to learn more about how natural or unnatural your body can be and feel. repetitive injuries happen, not only to others. bla bla bla,,, take care mate, have fun!
